dude I almost just wanna buy a truck and tools and just learn from your hands on video instructions vs. the community college I'm attending. lol. .... naw but seriously thanks for these... it allows me to practice it's dope stuff.... trying to get it right with pipe fittings and welding in general... arc welding tigs.. over heads .. stainless steel structural steel.. whatever... it's all new to this kid anyways I served in the Marines corps for 21 years now it's all about the trade life for me next best thing to blowing stuff up.. is building stuff up... We do it a little different offshore smaller tacks an we never drive a wedge in it just use a spacer. I guess when you learn it different it looks wrong when you see done a different way . I don't like 2" sch40 or 80 pipe . Offshore pipeline welder 32 years . It's great your sharing your skills with other welders God bless you .

great vid bro. looking to take my 3G test in a couple weeks. did my first open v groove in 1G today. it was cool. used a 6011 at around 85 amps for root and hot. 7018 3/32 at around 90 amp for intermediate and cover.

I maybe wrong but the water in the pipe can only come from condensation. Pipe left out during a warm day attracts condensation as it cools during the night and subject to the time of year and terrain dew can also collect in pipe laid outside. Here in the UK it just rains for 300days a year so water is problem we have to live with.

Not sure my comment is necessary but imma say it anyways, bout 5 years too late. There’s no moisture in the steal … the preheat is to prevent rapid cooling and thermal shock basically, preventing cracking in the bead or tacks. The moisture you see is from the combustion process of the preheat torch itself, fuel combined with oxygen creating water vapor… it’s condensation basically on the cold pipe. Flame impingement. Not trying to be a smart A$$ and call anyone out, just want to clarify something that’s incorrect. This and other videos are super helpful on many things and very spot on in most cases. (Welder here for 25 years myself) just trying to add informative information to fellow welders.

Say it's good to see you up there at the empyre South I come across that dude he was rebuilding an SAE 300 he still ain't got the damn thing done I was going to buy a 271 Detroit and a 1978 SAE 400 but I found this deutz diesel- SAE 350 and just had to have it so I got out of building one from scratch however I got to do the jugs on this I can't win for losing

2 inch sched 80 1/8 rod 3/32 land keyhole and run..... 5/32 70 18 hot pass n cap. Last session was bout 120 inches of fit up and weld out 100%xray

Hey man, stumbled on your channel. Couple questions. Why isn’t your helper fitting you up? And why not tack all your spools up first, toss em aside until you’ve got 30-40”, theeeen toss em on your wheel, heat them up and weld em. This way you can keep the heat in your piece and your fitter/helper can leave you alone for a couple hours and smash out the math and cut pups. Not sure if that would help you out. I know everyone has their own way of doing things. I’m a pipefitter/welder and I learn something new from every guy I work with still.

This week at work I’ve seen my foreman get a wedge and heat it up to cherry red( only half of the wedge ) untill a magnet don’t stick to it, then dip it in oil.

Outside with cold metal you should always preheat the metal to at least 300 degrees.

Thomas Lyons 50 degress min preheat for anything under 3/4 wall. Over 3/4 wall , 175 - 250 preheat for carbon.

So the concept of preheat to temp deals with slow dissipation of heat on the item to be welded? Cooling rapidly causes the cracking? And standing water on the pipe definitely cant be welded.

Have you consider to do a carbon infusion at somewhat 1200 degrees C ? I mean that will make a difference, there is a very fine line between brittle and soft.. and the job is not that hard to do..

You got that SAE 300 dude when I had figured out my reactor right that freaking 350 I've got will drag a Rod up uphill man never seen anything like it I know the stuff that you're doing is a hell of a lot more technical than what I'm doing however a good weld is a good weld rather your spinning circles run in the quarter mile I got about 25000 pounds of steel to hang in this house I'm going to take y'all to work with me one day I'd like to get an arc shot camera but they're too expensive I'm just getting started but to be able to teach people Arc blow and how to counteract that in the differences between welding machines is phenomenal I'm going to do a video of an oil burner jobsite heater very simple heat exchanger in burner got a small job to do today but I'll see if I can't get something downloaded on it tonight y'all stay safe

Ever think about shortening the V? I cut my handle in half. Takes the weight off, welding for 10 hrs, it makes it little better. And, yea, wedges are junk, and overpriced.
