Actually they got sold because Boston Dynamics has wowed the world several times over with its incredible robots that can do things like lift loads, jump higher than a human can and get up after it’s fallen over, the company hasn’t been able to build anything it can bring to the market, or earning its owner any revenue.
@LetsTalkWithRobots6 жыл бұрын
They did it actually in Nov 2017 but they got rejected because Huw Williams, editor of Jane's International Defence Review magazine, told CNBC by email Wednesday that the reception from the army has been mixed. "They can operate in a lot of terrains, but don't have the mobility to go everywhere," he said. "Their noise signature is an issue - battery technology isn't where it needs to be to meet the power requirements of larger systems, so they have been powered by traditional combustion engines, which are noisy." and the defense analyst said it's unclear if the military could find a use for it. at least for next few years. but still, Boston dynamics is consistently working on noise levels and control engineering to meet the expectations of the military. and it will happen soon because this year we have really efficient upgrades.

I mean, it makes sense if you consider the reality that they're still too expensive in comparison to using just standard humans. The sheer degree of maintenance required to simply keep them fully functional would be over the top. There's also the reality that dedicating an entire army to robotics would open them up to being hacked, or worse yet, uselessness through electromagnetic pulses, which can be made for an incredibly cheap cost.
@Hans59584 жыл бұрын
For offensive purposes, of course they will use in other applications.
@Gogglesofkrome4 жыл бұрын
@@Hans5958 you're going to run into the same issue of robots being in need of maintenance or repair. Sadly all of the robotics that actually matter are mostly American but a few are Japanese, none are European. Reason being is a brain drain. Many Europeans actually work on robotics of course, it's just the projects and pay here is ridiculous compared to California where there's deep pockets for major projects that're never-ending. Also, even if your work never makes it to the intended target, the technology is bought out and used on something bigger and greater thus your hard work almost certainly wont go to waste if you're working for a major player.

"The military has no interest in using these..." pahhahHahaahHa yeh, yeh of course they don't. How stupid do they think we are?
@RiggsEclipse6 жыл бұрын
Actually it makes sense when you think about it. You can't tell in the vid but Atlas is really loud with all those electric motors going and isn't very fast either. A human with a scrap of military training could outsmart it easily. Not to mention as well it can't identify friend from foe so fitting it with a fire arm would be ridiculously difficult and probably cut it's already relatively short battery life (atleast compared to how long the average military engagement is) even shorter. Atlas really wouldn't be much help in the military besides for maybe logistics as a supply carrier.
@aqueminiarts6 жыл бұрын
@@RiggsEclipse The vast majority of drone strikes don't target people correctly anyway. So I doubt the military would be bothered too much about precise targeting.. They literally bomb entire buildings full of people based on the location of a mobile device. So deploying an armed robot into a building wouldn't be much different. I agree at the moment these machines could be out smarted. However with 5-10 years development they could probably move almost silently at an unsee able speed and process 100s of calculations in the time it takes a human to react. They also don't have any hesitation or suffer fatigue and will not be effected by ptsd.
@RiggsEclipse6 жыл бұрын
@@aqueminiarts While I agree about the drones that is bombing runs you're talking about so that doesn't really apply here. Kinda comparing apples to oranges there. And the thing is that yes Somme of those things could become realities but ya gotta remember that for every improvement means a power consumption increase. And while computers have advanced incredibly in a short time batteries aren't advancing as quickly. Plus a computer program to identify friend from foe while already difficult to make to begin with, could be easily fooled with the right camo. So it'd have to be constantly updated which you can't really do while they're in a fight and if they can't identify a foe they're just expensive paper weights. Like with time I'm positive we'll have military robotics like what you're thinking but Atlas is no where close to that level for anything like that any time soon. That's not to mention unlike machines in movies you break one chip or wire and the whole thing will just stop working when it comes to computers. So they'd be really delicate.
@aqueminiarts6 жыл бұрын
@@RiggsEclipse I understand the problems you've raised with targeting and identify foes. My point was that military forces don't usually care so much for civilian casualties, they literally kill hundreds/thousands to get one target. The Industrial military complex does not care for your innocence. The issue with battery life is obviously a problem at the moment. But you can't seriously believe that what we watch on KZbin is cutting edge, this is years behind what they are actually capable of right now.
@RiggsEclipse6 жыл бұрын
@@aqueminiarts I mean to a degree they surely must care for innocents atleast for public image sake. And I honestly don't know. We have no way of knowing if for any reason that if they don't there will always be someone who thinks they're lying just cause it's the gov saying it. And while I agree the fanciest stuff will surely be kept a secret I also highly doubt it's a men in black situation. Tanks and better radar were kept secret in WW1 but they weren't science fiction levels of advanced for their time. We keep things secret sure but realistically they're not gonna be as advanced as many seem to think.

@chhoc5 жыл бұрын
@@Invaderchaos Why does it matter if they are radioactive? The surface of Mars gets bombarded with high levels of radiation anyway. Up the power on those RTGs, use orbital solar cells and a terrestrial concentrator, send an operational nuke launched over water, use in-atmosphere and -ground chemistry... there are a few options for power. I'm with JD.. why send humans? Don't tell me because they are quieter.

As a fan of Battlebots, I've always questioned what is 'robotic' about them. I had a remote control car in the 70's. They are cool and fun, and I greatly appreciate the home grown aspect. I'm similarly curious about Drones. I see little autonomy, or even programming (let alone sensing, reacting).
