Hey folks! I know, I know…this was a long time in the making - which is why I put double the effort into it :) I really hope it was worth the wait for you! Since I didn’t want to make the tutorial section any longer than it already is, there were some things left on the cutting room floor with regard to the intro/re-intro. Just let me know if you need more details on those sections! New poll coming up in April - stay tuned! Cheers Jo

Hi, I'm loving this version but really struggling with the strumming. I just can't seem to get the rhythm right.
@JoZeeland
@JoZeeland 2 жыл бұрын
@@jessicabhadreshwar3277 Hey Jessica! Thank you :) Unfortunately, I'm horrible at explaining strumming patterns, let alone "tabbing" them out - but I'll try nonetheless :D If we look at the first chord of our main riff (that kind of g-major chord) at 08:02, the simplest way to play the rhythm is: 2 down-strokes: one on the first beat and one on the second beat 1 up-stroke on the last 16th before the third beat 1 down-stroke on the third beat 3 up-strokes: one on the 4th beat, one on the first 16th after the 4th beat and one on the final 16th before the loop starts over. That's basically 08:02 to 08:04 = one full bar; and then it just repeats over and over again. That's just the basic rhythm though! Once you feel comfortable and confident about that, you can add more strokes (another down-stroke between the first 2 down-strokes, another down-stroke after the first 2, up-stroke on the 16th right after the third beat) One day, I want to learn how to create tabs online so I can share them with you all on here - until then, I hope my sloppy description will be good enough :D Good luck and always feel free to let me know if you have more questions! Cheers Jo

could you provide some details about the chord shapes for the re-intro? didn’t hear those mentioned and would love to learn it
@JoZeeland
@JoZeeland Жыл бұрын
@@swapnavdeka3481 Hey there! Yes of course! Unfortunately, this was something that I decided to cut out of the video for time reasons, but here are the general shapes anyways: Chord #1: 10-x-0-0-10-0 As a transition into the next chord, play this little lick on the d, b and e-string: - 9 - - 0 - 10 - 10 - 0 - - 0 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Chord #2: x-10-x-0-0-0 No transition this time. Chord #3: x-9-0-0-10-0 Same transition lick as after #1: - 9 - - 0 - 10 - 10 - 0 - - 0 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Chord #4: x-x-0-0-0-0 Resolve that chord to: x-x-0-9-0-0 Repeat the whole part once. You can strike the chords once - or somewhat maintain the general rhythm/feel of the other parts. Generally, these chords + licks fall onto the "oooooohOHohoh" choir that comes in on the second round of the re-intro, basically copying the choir melody. Try it out and let me know if this works for you :) Good luck! Jo

Hey, thank you so much :) Glad you've been enjoying playing along to this! If you're referring to the acoustic guitar in verse 1 (which basically mimics a mandolin), then this is how I played it: Chord 1 (D-major for the overall harmony): Alternate between x-x-x-x-15-12 and x-x-x-x-15-14 Chord 2 (A-major for the overall harmony): Alternate between x-x-x-x-10-7 and x-x-x-x-10-9 Chord 3 (G-major for the overall harmony): Alternate between x-x-x-x-15-12 and x-x-x-x-15-14 again. Chord 4 (back to D-major) EITHER Alternate between x-x-x-x-15-12 and x-x-x-x-15-14 again OR (which is what you see in the video) Play x-x-x-x15-17 (no alternating between chords here) That's it for the verse! Let me know if you want the pattern for the chorus as well :) Hope this helps already! Take care and all the best - Jo

Hey Jo, do you happen to have Jonny's guitar chords for the 2019 version? I managed to figure out some of the chords myself, but the rest just sounded a little off, even though I was in standard tuning. Here's what I have so far, I have no idea if they're even correct. Verse D xx0775 (??) A x07650 G absolutely no idea Chorus (he plays the melody by alternating between 0 and 2 on the first string) Bm x24432 G xx0000 (??), sometimes plays 3x0000 D xx0232 A xx2232 (??) By the way, thanks for the tutorial! I learned this song a while ago, but I was just suddenly really interested in Jonny's guitar part for some reason.
@JoZeeland
@JoZeeland Жыл бұрын
Hey Kenny! What you have so far is definitely pretty close! The way I played that part in my version looks like this though: Verse: 1) Alternate between xx0755 and xx0775 (D) 2) Alternate between x07655 and x07675 (A) 3) Alternate between xx 0055 and xx0075 (G) 4) Back to phrase 1 (D) Chorus: 1) Alternate between xx4430 and xx4432 (Bm) 2) Alternate between xx0032 and xx0033 (G) 3) Alternate between xx0230 and xx0232 (D) 4) Alternate between x0223x and x0225x (bar chord with your index finger here for 22) (A) Variation for the third round the of chorus: 1) Alternate between xx4430 and xx4432 (Bm) 2) Alternate between x0223x and x0225x (A) 3) Alternate between 3x003x and 3x0032 (G) 4) Alternate between 02003x and 020032 (Em) 5) Alternate between x0223x and x0225x (A) That's how I played it in my recording! The guitar is definitely part of my arrange, but it's mixed with so many other guitars playing that same rhythm that it got buried in the mix eventually :D But it is there! And it's the closest I could get it to look like what Jonny does in the BBC version :) The chorus part is also pretty gnarly! Took me quite a few attempts to get a decent take for the recording, I remember. Hope that helps, Kenny - and thank you so much for your support :) Let me know if you have any other questions and have a good one! Jo

Hey Jo, Wow! How do you manage to figure these things out so accurately and so quickly? Take "The Astronaut" for example, you managed to whip up a video in maybe a day or two after the song was officially released! You even got the tuning down and all the chords too. I could never. I tried these chords out earlier and they sound great! Thanks for sending me them. Not necessarily related to guitar, but do you have any advice for singing? I haven't really tried to sing before. Trying to sing the right notes and putting a lot of emotion into it is a lot harder than it seems. I have terrible relative pitch and I don't really want to sing too loud. You seem to have figured it all out though! You sing really well, in both your covers and originals. Thank you again for everything.
@JoZeeland
@JoZeeland Жыл бұрын
@@kennydooo @Kenny Do Hah! Thanks so much, Kenny :) I really can't give you one specific reason for how I figure out Coldplay stuff at the rate I do. I do however believe that growing up as a very young guitarist with Parachutes and Rush of Blood and, at that time, being completely blown away by the songs arrangements and use of instruments were huge contributing factors. More specifically, I was so amazed by their sound that I really wanted to be able to replicate exactly what the guitars - above all, the acoustic guitars - are doing. It kind of just clicked from there on out and it feels like Coldplay's way of arranging songs and their specific guitar style, especially Chris's rhythm guitar style, have become part of my own musician's DNA. So yeah :D I guess I've also always been intrigued by acoustic guitarists who use unique tunings, which is why both Chris Martin and Nick Drake have always been my biggest guitar idols. In terms of singing, well yeah, obviously I'm not professionally trained in it or know much about technique, buuut looking back now at almost 20 years of "publicly" singing myself, all I can say is that you just gotta keep at it, practice practice practice, find a style of singing that suits you best (low range, mid range, high range with chest voice or falsetto - or all of it combined!!) and ride with it. To me, singing has always almost felt like "working out" in that you will start out with practically no muscle mass at all - and you just gotta exercise continuously and gradually, year after year, to start building muscle mass and become stronger :D I will never have the most powerful voice, but compared to what I sounded like when I started at 15 years, I now sound so much more confident, comfortable and - within my own style and range - powerful. Sorry for this incredibly long-winded answer - but I really appreciated your questions and hope I was able to answer them sufficiently :) Hit me up when there's anything else on your mind! All the best to you - and good luck on your journey! Jo
@kennydooo
@kennydooo Жыл бұрын
@@JoZeeland Long answers are perfectly fine! I definitely enjoy reading explanations like these, especially explanations as intriguing as yours. You have a really interesting guitar journey! I was born sometime after Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head were released, but never really listened to Coldplay songs until the Mylo Xyloto era. Even then, I never really paid attention to music until recently! And you're right-their arrangements are absolutely wonderful, you just cannot get the same sound any other way. Can't just put a capo on 1 for Viva or capo 4 standard tuning on Yellow, since the sound you get from the original tunings is just infinitely better. I've only started guitar sometime last year, but I was never content with the "easy" versions, even as a beginner-I always hunted down the official arrangements. That's why I'm here haha My singing journey has only barely started, but I'll be sure to keep at it. So far, it seems pretty intimidating, but that was also what I thought about guitar when I first started. Did you use anything to help you when you first started singing, like tutorials and apps and such? I've been trying to train both my voice and my ear, but so far it doesn't seem like I'm making too much progress. I have no idea what exactly I'm supposed to be listening for. Thank you again for the advice and information! I'm pretty sure that you are the most helpful person I've come across when it comes to the guitar. Did you ever get around to setting up a Patreon or some other donation platform? I would absolutely donate a bit, and I'm sure others would too!
@JoZeeland
@JoZeeland Жыл бұрын
@@kennydooo Yup - totally feel the same way about authentic covers/tutorials :) Of course, it's absolutely fine to play songs in simplified / more accessible ways, like keeping your guitar in standard tuning and just putting a capo on it - especially if you're in a live setting maybe and you don't wanna constantly switch between tunings. But yeah, with some artists, it's just really, really cool to be able to replicate the exact sound, tuning, etc. I'm so thankful I get to showcase Coldplay's stuff on my channel and have an audience that appreciates those efforts - it really means the world to me :) As for starting out as a vocalist, mmmh, no not really...didn't use any assistance, apps or anything of that kind when I started out, I literally just went for it lol. And again, looking back on my first recordings, I sound absolutely hideous compared to now :D But again: it really is about taking on the journey, keeping at it and growing. Maybe the one advice I can give you is to start out with songs you're super comfortable with and that have a really simple melody...which I didn't do when I started out!! I started out with like the most challenging Beatles songs like "...And I Love Her" and obviously there was no way I could make that work, haha...So yeah, probably start out with sth. nice and simple without too big of a range just so you can test the waters in terms of ranges you're comfortable with. Thank you so much for indulging me, this has been a really fun conversation - haven't thought about my first few years as a guitarist/vocalist in so long, so this was a nice blast from the bast for me, tbh:D While I do not have a Patreon or sth. comparable set up (yet), 1) that's definitely something I want to do soon-ish, and 2) most of my YT videos have a "thanks" button below the screen, which I guess is YT's equivalent of a donation button. So that's always an option - and it goes without saying, I'd be absolutely humbled and flattered by any sort of donation :) :) You even considering it is so awesome - thank you so much!!! Hope this helps you out in some way and wasn't just me rambling on and on for multiple paragraphs :D Take care and have a great weekend - Jo

Hey there :) Thanks for the question! This one's particularly interesting, too. On the X&Y album, the acoustic guitar is in fact tuned down a half-step = Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb. On the more recent acoustic live version (from the Everyday Life days) though, Chris's acoustic guitar is tuned to: C A C G B C. Hope this helps!
