This video is showcasing the Kawai MP9000 Stage Piano. Here I will show you how to get Chris Martin’s piano sound on this keyboard. I will also show you another method if you don’t own/can’t get this keyboard. If you just want to hear some samples of the piano, jump to 5:08. If you are interested in a little back story on this piano, continue reading below.
So I actually managed to track this thing down on eBay back in February 2017. It was quite a process, as the gentleman I bought it from ran into some issues trying to get it to me. This keyboard is bulky and therefore is not on the light side. The shipping would have been astronomical, so he offered to drive it out to me. So after a few days/weeks of delays, I finally got my hands on it. However it was a bittersweet time.
My grandmother was suffering from Alzheimer’s for a few years, but it finally started taking it’s tole in early February. This was right around the time I was looking into getting this piano. My grandmother was a Coldplay fan. It was something that she picked up because I listened to them so much and for so long. She loved listening to and watching them. “Look at that crowd” she would always say. It was a special bond we had, and one I am extremely grateful for. Unfortunately she passed away on February 27, 2017. I got this piano the next day.
I was so excited to finally have Chris’ sound at the tip of my fingers, but very upset at the same time. Because of this, I hardly touched the piano for a few months. I would play Clocks on it occasionally, but nothing major. It wasn’t until the past fall that I was able to finally dive in. I got that spark back and it felt amazing.
Another thing that set me back was repairs. One of the keys started to stick to another. I thought this would be something that ended up being unfixable, but fortunately for me it was. I brought it in to a shop and not only did they fix the key, they made a bunch of other adjustments to it as well. Basically the thing felt like a brand new keyboard.
So there have been a few things that have set me back a bit with making more videos, but I am happy to finally be doing it again. I have a bit of a track record or posting a few lessons, and then disappearing for a few months. Although I need some breaks, hopefully there won’t be anymore long gaps.

Hi glad I could help, and thanks for the support! I've gotten most of my sheet music books off of Amazon. If you search Hal Leonard Coldplay, they should all come up. In my experience they have mostly been pretty accurate, but sometimes they are not. Either way it's definitely a good starting point.

Greetings sir, thank you so much for your tutorials, covers, and all the great stuff related to Coldplay. Your videos are a big part of me learning to play piano and reproducing the sound of the best band currently out making music. Thank you. After seeing your video about the mp9000, I decided to check my local Craigslist and to my surprise there was one for sale a few hours away. Needless to say I bought it. I love the keyboard. My question for you is on the settings. Can you tell me what the values are that show in the display when you hit the “effect”, “eq”, and “tone modify” buttons.There appears to be 4 numbers for each and they are either a positive#, a negative#, or 0.Using your video for the settings gets the sound close, but not spot on. I’m not sure what the previous owner had things set at, but with your values I should be able to replicate your settings which sound perfect (along with your playing). Then I just need to keep working on playing the songs correctly. Keep up the great work! Cheers!

That's awesome, so glad you found one! As for the values, here's what mine say: Effect: 10 50 79 11 EQ: all zeros Tone: all zeros Make sure you turn the knobs to where I mentioned as well. Good luck and happy playing! I'm curious to what your first reaction is when you get the settings right and play a song. Let me know! I know for myself, Clocks was the first thing I played and it was incredible.

@@Coldplaykb Thank you very much for the setting numbers. The piano sounds amazing, spot on! After seeing your response, I set the knobs to the exact location as yours, turned on the keyboard, selected Piano2, and checked the values. To my surprise the settings were already exactly the same as yours. My guess is, those are the default values for Piano2. I think the reason mine didn't sound right before was because I kept fiddling with knobs and messing it up. One round of "Clocks" put in instant smile on my face, and actually kind of gave me chills. I am currently working on "The Scientist" from your tutorial and absolutely love the live version that you show, it sounds so awesome. Thanks again for the help and the great tutorials and covers, they are my driving force for learning the piano. P.S. Any plans on "Something Just like this", I feel like it's a lot of Synth, but it would cool to see what you do with it. Cheers, Mike

If you want to invert the inverted sustain pedal all you have to do is while turning the piano on hold the sustain pedal down. I had the same yamaha and now im buying the same piano cause of you my friend! :)

Hey, I just bought one. I’m trying to figure out if it’s defective, the screen will flash numbers next to the Transposition “like +6 or +5 or whatever). The pedal is not registering, and the keyboard will be flashing numbers when I turn it on, and won’t stop until I turn off effects, reverb, and a few other things. Have you ever experienced anything similar to this?

Hey there, I haven't experienced anything like that but I definitely recommend taking it to a local repair shop where they can check that out. They can also tune up the keyboard a bit by fixing any keys and internals.

Awesome! So originally I was using the headphone out (which is bad because it will not record in stereo, so don't do this) but now I use exactly what you said. I have two XLR cables coming from the L&R out from the keyboard going into my audio interface. From there I have both channels balanced evenly and then I use the DAW to record.

breanchu so the ex pro samples aren't the exact same thing as the MP9000 sound, but they are really close from what I hear. You can mess around with the settings too. If you get the EX Pro samples, you would have to have it hooked up to your computer as well I believe. Let me do some more research to see what you could do for your situation.

The Kawai K5000W has very similar sounds, the piano sound is probably not as good as this though.

Gonçalo Silva yeah I lucked out big-time. Although I did have to spend a few hundred on repairs, but still totally worth it. I recommend putting on notification alerts for eBay, that's how I found mine. Also most people list them as pick up only because shipping is so expensive. Luckily the guy I bought it from was planning on driving out towards my area to visit some friends. It worked out perfectly.

@@Coldplaykb yes but there are many reverb modes in the settings and when u press the EQ button u see the numbers in the mittle screen Gabriele just say a little bit of reverb and nothing about the exact number settings of the EQ :(

What speaker setup do you use?

Great question, I completely forgot to go over that in the video. So it has no built-in speakers, and there are a number of things you can do. I am using an old speaker/surround system that my grandparents had. I think it's Sharp and it's from the 80s maybe? But I have a cable coming out from the pianos headphone jack and into a mini RCA mixer. From there I have that going out to the speaker system as well as out to headphones. Also going into the mixer I have an aux. So with the mixer I'm able to control the individual volume of all channels, which is nice.
