The cross bar on the spear head is meant to block a charging animal from pushing up the shaft and goring the wielder. Also, boar spears are NOT meant to be thrown. EVER. But you knew that, obviously.
@BigMikeMcBastard8 жыл бұрын
Yep. The hunting technique is actually to get the boar to charge you, while you brace the spear and allow the boar to impale itself on the blade. That's why the shaft is so thick, too, so it doesn't snap.
@albertbecerra6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip
@gargacaloid66015 жыл бұрын
They were also implemented in battle a lot. During the medieval/ renaissance time period the cross bars were more commonly known as wings or lugs. Very simple but effective design for sure
@Userius15 жыл бұрын
You definitely wouldn't want to throw it while hunting, but consequently this video does show that it would be a very effective heavy javelin.
@mattstrand90004 жыл бұрын
It's a boar pike. Heavy, thick haft, crossbar, head fitted to slide down shaft before it breaks... All because you don't throw it; you brace it against a tree, let the boar charge you, it impales itself up to the crossbar and stops before killing you

Actually they two cross guard like appendages on the spear head were there to prevent a boar from running up the spear after it was impaled and lacerating the hunter with his tusks, especially under the thighs. The boar would build up so much momentum that it would drive itself all the way up the spear to the hunter - thus, the two cross guards.

It is meant to be a hand held thrusting spear, not really for throwing, meant to hunt medium to large game with dogs. The cross pieces are called Quillions and are there to stop a big boar chewing its way up the shaft and Tusking you (hence the thick, solid Ashwood shaft for strength)

Tac, I've been told that the 90 degree hilt things on boar spears are there to keep the boar from running up the spear after he's been stuck. You use the spear by thrusting it in the pig and then you hold the critter at the end of the spear until he croaks. away from you

I've been looking at these for years. They seem well built, I just decided a SOG spirit would be the way to go since you can put it on a broom handle. I got a heavy duty industrial broom handle and put a 1/4in bolt through it (the male threaded end) with a lock nut and washer and within a couple throws the steel female threads on the SOG bent the threads on the broom just enough to make an annoying rattle noise. These types are definitely for thrusting. Great vid as always Tac.
@brianmccann6668 жыл бұрын
I have the Sog Spirit too. Plastic screw handles break. If you buy a metal screw paint shaft, it won't break or bend when thrown. But it is a novelty item at best. Not meant for serious usage... The cs maa spears are serious...

Actually, the wings are historical to boar spears. Historically, they would be made of bone or antler and just tied on, but they than started to make them from metal. They were made so when you thrust into the charging boar, the boar would be stopped on the wings saving you from being gored.

The most of cold steesl spears, are inspired by spears that are not to made to be thrown. The spears were often the only weapon people had in the past (effective distance advantage and much more affordable than a sword) and to throw your only weapon away wouldn't be that clever. Especially in this case: you never throw your boar hunter

Love me some Tac and the reviews are awesome...even though I do buy some stuff you don't recommend. I saw what you did to that poor little United Cutlery Kommando Warhammer, but believe it or not, it's the best walking stick I've ever had, and I mean that. I do know, however, that you truly do provide a torture-test for this stuff.. If a piece of gear can withstand you, then it's good to go in any situation. If you endorse it, then I know it can withstand volcanic eruptions...fighting dinosaurs...building a Roman colosseum...premarital sex...whatever. The Cold Steel Boar Spear isn't a spear meant for throwing, though. It has the spines to prevent the boar from running up the spear (which makes it more tip-heavy...with or without the boar attached), so it's primarily a thrusting weapon. I reckon you can use it as a throwing spear. Kinda like you can use a fillet knife as a bayonet. Results may vary lol. I know you know this...but I like Cold Steel so...
