jay has it down to an art, he has the introspective records on the album but can craft the radio records & they blow up

J Cole is a REAL rapper spilling out his emotions and opinions through rap through excellent lyricism.
@charlesryan730611 жыл бұрын
It's great to hear him talk how the industry works. It's even funnier to hear him mention a couple songs that had serious single potential but he chose to go back and try again each time. Although I think "Higher" & "Blow Up" could have made Top 40, especially "Higher" during the summertime.
@yarapah Жыл бұрын
Nah I think Blow Up woulda had the summer in a chokehold. Can you imagine that song blasting at the beach in Miami

I like radio how it is though. I don't want to be out cruising listening to some crazy deep shit. It's cool to have a balance of deep, catchy, relatable, and enjoyable for the radio (i.e. Bad, Power Trip) as opposed to just some REAL shit being said (i.e. Breakdown). Put that real shit on the album and leave room for like 3 or 4 singles. It's not compromising your craft; I look at it as providing for a different platform.

yeah i think both songs could have had big potential if they promoted properly also if J. Cole had taken the Big Sean, Meek Mill et al. approach of going to these radio runs with his mentor (Jay-Z in his instance) i'm 100% sure whatever song he chose out of the ones he mentioned, including "who dat" it would have been a commercial hit but you gotta respect his choice of wanting to make his name on his own
