An arcade platform game where you play a treasure hunter named Panama Joe to find an ancient treasure buried deep inside the catacombs hidden by the Aztec Warrior while you must be aware there are large maze inhibited by monsters. Bouncing and rolling skulls, dancing spiders, disappearing and re-appearing chains, and tons of fire await you. You will have to find keys to unlock doors to reach your goal. You can jump and climber ladders but you have no ability to have combat which is the reason why monsters in the game must be avoided at all costs. Any contact with the monsters will cause Panama Joe to lose a life. Eventually, you will be able to find amulets to make you invulnerable to these monsters for a short period of time.
Originally released in 1983 for the Atari 800 and Atari 5200. Later ported to many other systems in 1984.
This game is hard even more so than Pitfall and Aztec.
All 9 levels are shown. The game is endless. After beaten all levels, the last level endlessly restarts so I quit afterwards.

This is the first video game I ever played. 4 years old at my babysitter's house. Orange/brown shag carpet and all! Mornings started with watching family fued or scooby doo followed by some good ol Colecovision! Man I gotta find a way back to 1985!!!

Hey bro - born in 77 and we genxers had it the best: we saw everything develop in terms of video games, we had freedom in movement since our parents weren't obsessed with us and the politically incorrect comedy was awesome as well. This game is also one of the first I played and was a favorite along with jumpman junior. Now we got some cool metroidvanias to play like ori and the blind forest :). Take care

I remember how blown away I was the first time I played a video game that had more than one screen to it. LMAO People laugh now but you gotta remember the earliest console games where developed using the same formula as an arcade game which was Action packed , fast , and difficult. They wanted a game to be over quickly so they could maximize the money said game would make. That’s why with so many of those old games , level one and two are fairly easy. But when you get to level three it takes a HUGE LEAP in difficulty. Just play Pac-Man and look how much faster it gets. Frogger is another one I remember bring fairly simple on level one . But on level two the speed and difficulty doubles. But that style doesn’t work at alll when you’re playing at home. IMO , That’s what Nintendo figured out and based their earliest games around. Would NES have been so huge if the first 20 games that released with the system were mostly arcade clones with the improved graphics and original games of that nature? No way. It was games like Super Mario Brothers CastleVaina and IMO the most important game in 8 hit nes history The Legend of Zelda. In fact I attribute 75% of Nintendo’s success to LOZ because unless you had a computer and had played games like Ullitma or the like, Zelda was something you never dreamed of and really filled a important void in gaming. Every kid wants to be a hero that goes on a quest to save the world. The only games close to that were PC games and they were way to difficult for a 8 to 10 year old. But you could pick up LOZ , grab that sword and just go have a blast. That’s why games like this , Quintana Roo, Mountain Quest, the AD&D games for jntellvision were amazing

Here's a thing I found out as a child playing this game. If you put together all the screens in their order, they form an Aztec pyramid and its different levels, starting with the first screen, which is the top of it, each one larger than the previous one on top of it.

Now THIS is a game. Absolutely nothing like it on Intellivision, and only games I've found on Atari 2600 like it are Hero and Pitfall 2, but this game is better then both of them. Some hit detection and jumping physics issues, but considering its a year before the gold standard Super Mario Bros came out, they can be forgiven. Still very playable today. This is when games started to resemble classic games of the 8/16 bit era.

They made this game for the 2600 but it looked terrible. The Atari 5200 version was by far the best, it blew away the 2600 and the ColecoVision versions.

Anybody knows the, well, many lives never counted, exploit in the level around 24:21, after climbing down between the two snakes? I was such a little kid then: with your last life (yep, one shot deal but waaa, so worth it!) on the long conveyer, jump to the right in order to die on the corner of the floor on top of the short ladder then, get killed a second time by the laser chain gate and voila! 0-1=game over BUT 0-2= lots of lives; maybe to make up for the glitch, thank you ColecoVision for this creative error handling :) Enjoy!

I'd thought Level 9 was supposed to have no torch available, requiring the entire pyramid to be traversed in darkness, based on memory of previous runs. Guessing the Colecovision port was easier in this regard? I played this on the Apple II platform, but never got nearly so far.

I was 12 years old when this game came out in 1984 and I used to play it for hours on an Apple IIe and IIc. I want to say I won once, but I don’t remember. Good game for the time period with the technology we had back then. Are there any videos on here of what it looks like if you win the whole thing?

The atari 5200, and XL versions are way better, because its actually a lot easier to control your character. For some reason the colecovision port runs x2 faster. It makes the game almost unplayable! I constantly have trouble trying to jump small gaps and ledges because flys off and dies.

I had this game on C64. Never finished it. And when I see this video I find it to be too long for a game of that era. Also the dark places are F-Up. Sorry I couldn't see its end.
@jordanhazen7761
@jordanhazen7761 Жыл бұрын
It's 9 separate play-throughs in sequence. Successfully finishing puts you back at the beginning of the pyramid, at the next highest difficulty, all sharing the same map, but with slight differences controlled by difficulty level, ever-expanding darkness regions, and needing to find a toch being one of these. In most ports, level 9 (final) has no torch available, and has to be played completely in darkness. I guess they expected players to have memorized all the screens by then.

This version of the game is not good at all, but if it is something enjoyable, the game is not good, it has bugs, bad placement of the enemies and difficulty, but well, I give it 6.9/10 for having the same marble as the original game
