It's true that, in european countries high processed food have less ingredients, but you will be still fat even if you are working in a job, where you must move a lot. Some canned food like tomatos are even imported from China, but labeled as italian, where a lot pesticides are used. After the EU regulations, it's legal to do this, since the laste step is putting the giants can of mixed tomatoes in the can and that happaned in Italy. I'm Japanese and I have to say one thing you should know; The portion you mentioned served in Japan is small to you Not because of Harahachibu. The portion is that "small" amount because it is ENOUGH for regular or most adult Japanese people to become full, that's why. Period.
@Chaiilatte842 күн бұрын
I think you misunderstood what he was trying to explain. He mentioned the 80% full mindset but that wasn’t the point of his statement. He stated that he learned the word for large BECAUSE he knew that the small portions would leave him hungry. But even your guys large is our small regardless if you all eat to 80% fullness. You said that those portions were ENOUGH for adults that’s not how American think, we don’t eat for ENOUGH food we eat until we feel physically sick and a lot of us don’t know the difference between ENOUGH and stuffed.
Few Japanese people are likely to consciously practice the concept of *hara hachibu* (eating until 80% full), but I believe cultural influences are at play. Being accustomed to eating moderate portions likely reduces the preference for oversized servings. Conversely, if one regularly consumes oversized portions, it may lead to the body adapting to require more, creating a vicious cycle where one becomes increasingly dependent on larger sizes.

My mom and step dad are morbidly obese. I have watched them go through fad diet after fad diet, one of which was so extreme that it limited them to only 500 calories a day and had them taking "pregnancy hormone" drops by mouth, claiming that the HORMONE was what facilitated the weight loss. They both lost 100 pounds on that diet in the span of 6 months, and the moment they stopped eating specifically what the diet guide book told them to, they went back to pizza, greasy wings, high-fat and high-calorie foods on a daily basis. They are both back at the weight they started at, and no matter how many times I tell them that going on a diet is stupid and that they should be making informed decisions on altering their daily dietary patterns, they still go to the extremes. My step dad got gastric sleeve surgery 4 years ago to reduce his stomach size and he has lost no weight as a result, and my mom just sent my wife and I home with 5 pounds of various types of bread because she "realized that it's the carbs that are making her fat." But the 10,000 calories of snack foods within arms reach of them while lounging in the living room for the entire evening has nothing to do with it. Meanwhile, I constantly struggle to find foods that don't have sucralose and artificial coloring in them if I'm shopping anywhere other than Aldi, and even them I'm occasionally surprised to find one of those two on the ingredients list. Like why the fuck does every flavor of Shasta soda have sucralose in it, despite already having sugar as the main ingredient? Why do we need to make the sweet thing even sweeter ARTIFICIALLY?

People talk about portion sizes, but packaging is also enourmous. In Europe, most food comes in 100 g packages and you use that to feed several people or last several times. Which is about 3.5 ounces. When you get huge packaging, you end up using more because you are serving yourself as a share of the packaging. Also in Europe they will say xxx calories per 100 g, so if you have a 100 g package and eat half the package or a third, you can easily calculate the calories, but in the USA, they will say something like xxx calorie per 7 peanuts. It makes it impossible to understand how many calories you would be consuming by just looking at the package in the store. It makes people give up and just overeat without being conscious.

There's a lot to talk about here, but at minimum food dye needs to be banned. No one needs their food to be brightly colored at the cost of cancer. But also, car dependence kills walkability, which is the easiest and most accessible form of exercise. I walk about an hour a day as a non-driver and I eat whatever I want and don't gain weight. Without that walking I'd be fat. Most people in the US simply don't get enough exercise because all natural exercise has been replaced by driving cars everywhere. Not Just Bikes is right. After several months back in the US, she'd returned to her prior weight. What caused it? She went in the summer. Southern Japan, where Tokyo is located, is ungodly hot and humid in the summer. It's like 95 degrees with freakishly high humidity every day. It's even hot when it rains! As a result of all that, it's very difficult to actually do things outdoors. I visited the US a few weeks ago, to Anaheim with my family. I was shocked by how crappy the groceries were. THE smallest produce section I’d ever seen at my life at the supermarket by our Air BnB. The quality of the produce was also horrible - especially considering we were in CA. Normally I try to shop the outside aisles of the supermarket as a rule in Canada. That’s where the produce, Dairy and Meats tend to be that are locally sourced. Even our grains I try to buy the stuff baked in house. It’s also interesting because in Canada many foods are not allowed to be made with HFCS.
@ariel7409Күн бұрын
Also they healthier food is more expensive than junk food. The cheapest drinks you can buy in a grocery store is a huge bottle of soda, whereas healthier drinks cost 3 times as much. Fruits and veggies are expensive but a big bag of chips is like 1/3 the cost. Reverse that and a lot of the problem will be solved.

Especially after you acknowledge how all the ultra-processed chemicals are potentially affecting us. I've tried all the diets from vegan to carnivore, whole foods and paleo. This video is great!! Once I hit middle school and my mom stopped cooking like she had been because she had to start working, I got highly addicted and accustomed to ultra-processed high sugar and high fat foods!! It became a nightmare as I saw my weight increase and I started to feel terrible: back pain and tired, many times even lethargic, ALL the time!!! It was a years-long fight to get myself unaddicted to the foods that made up my terrible diet (and probably would have let to diabetes which is in my family) and finally get my weight down AND maintain it. I DID fall for some fad diets along the way (low carb high fat, keto, zero-moderation styles). I'm glad that I finally was able to work my way to a more balanced whole foods and moderate approach to eating that FINALLY gave me my life back and better control over my health. I'm not perfect, but my weight is normal again, my back pain has massively subsided, and I no longer get lethargic during the day!! P.S. 19:26 Thanks for saying "if you eat animal products". That was appreciated as a vegan here. :)

I've been on a Whole food plant based diet for almost a decade, And My friend who eats fast food drinks sodas eats candy and crap and cant cook a single meal said that to me. He has Chrohn's disease and I was on his case for years telling him he would feel better if only he cleaned up his diet (hes had a few close calls and surgery's due to blockages). He's literally said to me multiple times he would rather die eating his shitty food than clean up his diet, Sadly all this highly palatable ultra refined junk is literally getting people addicted, inflaming them and then they are getting fed the same crap at the hospital. My local hospital literally has a Dunkin Donuts inside it and you can get drinks of soda as a patient, What is going on America its time to wake up these companies and medicals only see you as dollar signs there is no compassion left these days, Its really not hard to eat healthier and exercise a few times a week maybe you'll might start feeling better physically and emotionally if you cut out the processed crap and start moving!

Great video, here in Canada we have a number of the same dyes and high sugar foods as well; same with the car-centered places rather than walkable cities. The thing that really stands out to me around food & exercise is how they have been added to the "productivity" rhetoric. Fast Food, gym exercise as a symbol of "success," whereas elsewhere in the world the lifestyle itself is based on balance. Maybe there are lessons we can take from that concept that go beyond "what" and focus on "how".

I was experiencing a lot of health problems and weight gain. Doctor just wanted to give various meds to adress the symptoms. I ended up doing an elimination diet over the course of six months - not with the intention of losing weight, but just to see if I was eating anything that was contributing to my joint/foot pain, exhaustion, and skin issues. Started out eating just red meat, and immediately (two weeks or so) the debilitating pain in my feet that was preventing me from walking in the morning, stopped. I hadn't lost weight at that point, but the pain was gone. Joint pain followed soon after and my skin gradually cleared up. Started introducing other foods and didn't see any problems with veggies, dairy, seafood, but BOOM... Processed seed oils. All my joint and foot pain started up again. Extra virgin olive oil is okay, and I've been playing with avocado oil recently, but for the most part, I stick with butter, ghee and animal fats for cooking. Result of the elimination diet had me reducing grains, avoiding added sugar in foods that had no need of them, cutting out "vegetable" oils entirely, and I feel better now than I did in my twenties, plus am down 80 pounds without calorie restrictions. I pretty much can eat what I want, but I do need to do most of my own cooking and a LOT of label reading. Processed foods are almost impossible.

There is an increase of the obesity rate in general in Germany (and some other countries of Europe), so with the wrong food choices getting fat is relatively easy. What I‘ve heard so far from European friends after their move to the US, that the food quality here seems to be much better in general (talking about the regular stuff like fruits and veggies you can get in the supermarket) compared to the US. And it’s true that cities here are built differently and that we have a better public transportation system. After leaving the city behind and moving to the countryside it has gotten a bit trickier to reach the 10k steps because now I really need my car for almost everything.

I dislike the cultural framing around car dependent infrastructure being something that's uniquely American. It's more a question of timing of development. Boston for example is about as American as you can get and it's walkable, because of when it was built. And guess what, Americans love it. Nobody visits New England and goes "the towns were nice but I wish I had to drive more." Meanwhile you go to Australia and Asia and you'll find the same car dependent nightmare sprawl in cities that were built during the 20th Century. If Europe wasn't built out before the industrial revolution I can guarantee you there would be suburban sprawl there too.

America and Australia are too big and most of the land is just wilderness so you got to take the car .in Europe you can literally walk from city to city in a few hours with a bunch of suburbs farms and a tiny forest between the cities even the forest sometimes has a random vending machine. if you tried that in America or even worse Australia it would be a dangerous multi week adventure .

Those kids in Gen Z and Gen A that I've seen who are not overweight are the active kids who don't spend their lives on their phones - the ones with weight problems are those who are fixated on tablets and phones. Perhaps the decay of walking/cycling/fitness in general should be looked into as well.

I‘m so confused about the Japan comment 😭 Yeah, the vegetable side dishes are insultingly small. But if you order a big portion of rice and a bigger portion of meat, is it not a lot? Or at least, a normal amount? How big are American portions????? Or maybe the better question is: How cheap is food that you can get such big portions? Restaurant portions in Germany are absolutely too small for me. It’s because ingredients and rent is so expensive. I don’t think it has anything to do with Europeans wanting to eat this little (especially for those prices). I really am wondering how that even works in America.

Sugar needs to be reduced and maybe even banned.

Sugar is not really a problem when coming from whole foods. Especially fruit

You can’t ‘ban’ sugar bc ppl can’t control themselves. Its ppls responsibility to learn to eat whole fruits or blend those up in a smoothie when they get a sweet craving instead of reaching for the processed fibre-free candy. Also eating sweet treats sometimes isn’t a problem it’s once again that USAamericans have no self control, and that’s a personal problem.

@@Dannalasapa That's objectively wrong since the the whole low-fat fad was an excuse for food companies to replace fat with sugar and now the same with "sugar-free" products having artificial sweetners. Which are far more harmful than the already high sugar foods. How can you "control" yourself when the only choice is SUGAR!
