Coleman Camp Stove Fix - How to Adjust Flames
Sharon, one of the Two Tired Teachers, is going to adjust the flames on a Coleman camp stove. If you've watched many of our videos, you know that we had the stove top and oven taken out of our Micro Minnie.
When we cook with a camp stove inside, we are using it where there was a propane stove. We have both a vent and a window, so that we aren't getting fumes from the propane.
Tools you will need to adjust the flame are a Phillips head screwdriver that will fit inside the knob on the front of the stove, a pair of pliers, a paper towel, and some sort of either grease or lubricant.
Once you get the knob off, you will need the pliers to loosen the nut that is holding the valve in. Once the nut is loose, you can unscrew it and remove it. Reattach the knob on the front of the stove, and unscrew the valve that is inside.
As shown on the video, the valve in our stove was really coated and dirty. Clean that valve with the paper towel. Once you've cleaned the valve, twist the end of the paper towel as tight as possible, and put it in the hole where the valve was. You will probably get some more excess grease on your paper towel.
Screw the valve back in, and reattach the nut. It is an easy adjustment that doesn't take much time, but it was highly successful with our camp stove.

This is great! I just got my 40+ year old Coleman back. It’s a mess. I loaned it to someone and they said the flames was too high. I gave my 3-year-old Coleman in exchange for my old one and the case. The quality difference and the old case were the reasons. I knew I could just clean with some sos soap pads and now, thanx to you, I’ll be able to fix the flame myself. (I know I got the better end of the deal. . . my 40-something kids were in grade school when I got the stove. I’ve missed it)

What a wonderful instructional video! I always recommend when working with propane though, before lighting anything test for leaks using a spray of soapy water and check for bubbles! My Coleman Classic 2 burner has been flawless from the factory for the last 4 years, but I see so many people saying they are either on full blast or off. I will point them to your video to help out! Coleman probably put too much lube goo from the factory in some of them. That explains the hit or miss nature of the issue. Happy camping!

We bought a Coleman Fyreknight new, and I had heard all the horror stories about being either "off" or on "high." So right out of the box, I adjusted it after watching a couple of KZbin videos on it. It did have globs of some kind of lubricant on it, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say if I hadn't "fixed" it before using it, I would have had to fix it afterward! @@TwoTiredTeachers So it turned out that my Coleman stove is so old that it only has one o-ring on each valve instead of the two. The one (each) that it did have was no longer o-ring shaped, but flat-faced. This is, I guess, why fire came out of the valve, lol. Now fixed.

Great video thank you! You should be aware that using a camp stove inside can be quite dangerous not necessarily just because of the fumes but because there is no remote way to shut off the gas if there's a gas leak in the stove. With stoves meant to be used indoors the gas supply is remote with a shut-off away from the stove should gas start leaking in the stove. I had a camp stove develop a small leak and it actually caught fire and melted the entire stove. I had no way to shut it off because there was just fire everywhere. Luckily it was outdoors and I could just knock it off the picnic table onto the ground where it continue to burn for quite a while. I can't imagine what would have happened if it was inside of a camper.

@@TwoTiredTeachersJust something interesting and perhaps a warning to anyone thinking of buying a specific model of Coleman stove. There's a model with a grill on the right side, burner on the left. It's called the Coleman Perfectflow Grill Stove. We were about to buy it, but I checked reviews on this thing. SO GLAD THAT I DID! Many people are reporting that the grill part is made of aluminum and MELTS and is useless. So even moreso, I'm happy to have the old, vintage, proven stove working like new again. LOL

Just found this video now - very helpful! I have a further question on the same components; one of my control knobs you have to turn off very tightly or it will let propane past. I am fairly sure that points to the rubber o ring(s) being worn. They don’t appear to be standard round o rings so where do I order new ones? I have looked for them on the Coleman website and elsewhere but only seem to find the ones for the regulator fitting. I can’t even find a part number. Can you (or anyone else) help me with this? Many thanks.
