In this video I use a Coleman stove top oven on our EcoZoom rocket stove. There have been times when we wanted to bake without heating up the van, breaking out the Coleman stove, or just to save propane. The EcoZoom rocket stove has been a great addition to our vanliving experience. The rocket stove burns twigs and other solid fuels and allows us to cook with renewable resources.

Great demo brother. We have the oven and I like to wrap it with a carbon felt blanket to insulate it a bit. Also have a eco-zoom double plancha model, 2 singles, three solar ovens and multiples of different camping and backpacking wood, gas and alcohol stoves and burners. Got to take care of the kids and grandkids.

Great demo! Another youtuber has a tutorial using the carbon felt covering over the stove. I just bought my oven online and it’ll be here next week and I’ll be buying the carbon felt blanket myself. Safe travels.

Your biscuits will cook much more quickly and evenly if you use a shallow pan or baking sheet pan that allows the hot air to circulate around the biscuits. Thanks for the innovative idea of combining the classic tech of the Coleman oven with the rocket stove "revolution."

Thanks Ed. That's true about the pan. I used what we had on board at the time. Living in 60sq' my kitchen selection is a bit limited. I've since picked up a small cookie sheet to cut down to fit into the stove. Thanks for watching, subscribe and ride along with us.

Excellent video, that really worked well, an oven that practically needs very little fuel, fantastic thanks.

I had someone suggest making a cover to slip over it from a welding blanket. I believe I shall have to try that to help hold heat at a steady temperature.

I use this oven every time I camp with my daughters, we make corn muffins for breakfast every morning. A little tip: A small pizza stone in the bottom of the oven helps to keep the temperature even. On windy days, I put tin foil along the top and sides to trap heat in as well.

Good plan, I'll have to pick up a pizza stone.

@@cupholder7758 True. I just happened to have the right sized pizza stone, though one of the unglazed stones I use in my smoker would work perfectly as well

Nice looking biscuits,had that Coleman oven back in the 1980s but had lots of problems keeping it at a good high temperature but since then decades later added a heat blanket for keeping the temperature up and had good results since then.anyone buying a Coleman oven buy a fire blanket and wrap around the top and sides which makes a good way of stopping temperature drop.

I agree. In the absence of a heart blanket, wrap aluminum foil around it it a couple of layers.

fascinating. I'd been wondering about alternative heat sources for a Coleman oven, and this really answered the question.

Sorry it took a while to respond, we're sometimes off-grid or out of range. The only adjustment I've done is to put aluminum foil around the tops and sides. When using it on the rocket the temp varies with the wind a bit.

Thank you for this! This was exactly what I was looking for lol. I have an eco zoom and I wanted to know if it would work on it. A lady in a post I saw said that a small pizza stone in the bottom helps regulate the heat. 350 is great for baking bread so it will work how I want it to.

Enjoyed this. I had one of these stove top ovens and it disappeared from my office bldg attic years ago. My only problem was burning the biscuit bottoms. I have seen people place rocks or marbles under the baking dish to prevent that.

Hasn't really considered a double due to space restrictions. Living full-time on the road on a van limits what we can carry. This does sound interesting I will be checking out a double.

Thank you this exactly answers my question. If you were not traveling, would a cinderblock rocket stove work as well (assuming it works properly). Im more interested in cooking here at home using fallen wood etc for fuel.

I would think it possible. However, it's not at all insulated so maintaining a steady cook temperature would be very difficult at best.

Interesting, I'd never heard of ecorocket stove.i was thinking of putting oven on small charcoal grill. On another video, can't remember which one :(, a gentleman made a cover out of a welding blanket. Looks it kept at a more even temperature.

Yes covering it definately helps hold the heat in and therefore cooks better. I'd like to know how it works on a small grill.

You never showed us the bottom of the biscuits. Rocket stoves put out considerably more heat than any propane stove. Items in the Coleman oven tend to burn on the bottom frequently.
@dancordray8686
@dancordray8686 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry about that, they were typical brown on bottom as I remember. You're right the rocket stove dies have a small diameter burn chamber. However, the Coleman oven has a heat diffuser since it is by design meant to sit on a burner. This coupled with the relatively cooler fire it worked well.

Sorry it took a bit to reply. It's not too bad. I try to burn hardwoods in the rocket stove. And, the real Kerry is let the stove burn for a fee minutes to get up to temp and then start cooking.

Good video. I'm thinking of buying one of these. Did you look at StoveTec and SilverFire before buying an EcoZoom? Why EcoZoom? Can you use the EcoZoom to grill burgers and steaks without the use of a pan? I hope you make more cooking videos using this stove. Thanks!
@dancordray8686
@dancordray8686 6 жыл бұрын
+Ender Bean first, I choose the EcoZoom based on some reviews and the ability to use charcoal briquets. It has a grill with the lower door to allow more airflow thorough. As for grilling without a pan... The diameter of the combustion chamber on nearly all rocket stoves is quite small. I guess you could lay a small piece of grill material across and do one are a time.

You can get a about 10” round grill top, use charcoal to manage the flame better and that’s it, steaks come out delicious, I’ve done it plenty.

I agree the rocket stove was not for grilling therefore a cheap grill does a better job. That's why I've got one of those $10 grills.
