How to build a solid brick dome virtualy Defying Gravity, Truly amazing! The strongest celling

Mexican masons, with only his trowel without formwork or ceiling mount seem to defy gravity with sophisticated technology through many years in Mexico, and in a very short time can build a work of art vault or roof type dome.
The dome, together with the bow, is proven to be one of the strongest structures can be built, resisting historically over millennia, if not used or rod or concrete. It supports a lot of weight, earthquakes, is fresh, and above all, very beautiful .
This is part of what is the craftsmanship of building a kind Catalan vault ceiling in the center of Mexico, specifically in the state of Queretaro.
The "Bovederos" (as we call them in Mexico) can travel anywhere (even abroad) to build this type of roof.

Y'all people can say all the things negative you want about these men! But they are "ARTIST". I was a really good bricklayer till I broke my back when I was 28. I could build some of the most beautiful fire places imaginable, but what I wouldn't give to work along side of these men for six months or so. Their the best I've ever seen! Be proud of your knowledge and skill men because what you know has been lost for centuries and centuries, a skill that is not only remarkable but magnificent. Great Artist and never mind you never used a rule. And if you people don't think an arch is strong? You check your physic's again! Why do you see all the Roman temples built with arches and still standing Mother Nature, an arch is probably this one single strongest structure in existence today and thousands of years past. I spent a lot of time in Guanajuato, Mexico, in the 90s. Over the years I spent hours looking up at ceilings just like these wondering how the hell they were made. I just assumed they must have had supports to ensure they met perfectly in the middle and didn't collapse in the process. Mad respect for the craftsmen who have perfected this technique. it repetitive and practiced he is using large units. i managed to train myself to lay bricks with exactly 10 mm perpends between each brick, simply because I discovered through observing my work that the tip of my index finger made the perfect gauge for starting me on good consistent practice. after that it became second nature and I even could work out without measuring, the full size brick needed to for 1st and second course work, but i would never recommend not measuring out the work area, i was told by a bricklayer he had measured it out there are the bricks you won't need any cuts (except the ends) so i got them all in. turned out he lied and was trying to make out i would botch the work.

It's not really sad. Where one trade is lost another is created. *Innovation.* The bricks are beautiful, but the material and skill are a result of the economic and environmental factors surrounding the construction. I'm not saying this to be an asshole. I'm saying it because I think that too many people revere dying (or totally irrelevant to their society) trades and techniques without considering the benefits of modern ones. There's a reason old techniques are replaced, and while I won't explain this simple near universal understanding because I respect your intelligence, I'll say that you can't have it both ways.

I truly respect any Craftsmanship & dedication to the craft - using the medium of choice- here is brick to create something out of nothing. Often doing the more difficult task & what others say is impossible. I’ve hired Mexican brick masons on smaller remodeling projects before, & I was amazed at the speed & agility- they got bricks replaced on an Home extension/addition, and just as I had envisioned- they seamlessly incorporated the new bricks with the old ones removed to make room for the additional room, making it look like the new addition had been there for 40 years... All other American masons had tried to convince me how much easier it would be to cut the old brick off in a straight line, and scrap the old bricks, and completely put new wall up with all new bricks. Hence you’d have a straight line of old - next to new. The addition would be obvious. When I told the Mexicans what I wanted, they just said No problem, when you want it done sir? And their work was impeccable. Despite that the funny thing I recall was all others required me to get a mortar mixer on site for them, the Mexicans just told me they need 2 pieces of plywood in which to mix the mortar on, the younger man in the crew mix the mortar, staying one step of his masons.

That's because in most developed countries if those structures were built now without codes they would fall down due to cost cutting and cheap material. Codes were created to prevent this. Back then a bad builder ended up starving to death through not getting any more work or "other" methods.

Look again, notice that they have interlocked steel reinforced concrete beams above all 4 walls, so when this dome made of bricks set hard, it becomes as one single structure along with the 4 beams and since they are tied at each corner with steel reinforced bars, the whole structure becomes as one single entity, so any movements within the walls will not effect the roof dom. Clever design, strong, earth quake resisting for sure. The roof can only fall if the walls crumble first, which if they do then no matter what type of roof you have will also crumble down.

An arch supports itself ONLY after each course of brick is complete. The reason the bricks are not falling before a course is complete is all in the mix. Nice rich mortar with some additives. The amount of water in the mix is important too. Also the type of clay bricks they are using will suck the water right out of the mortar extremely quickly, especially in hot sunny weather. So the mortar is bonding/drying almost immediately after a brick is set enough to the point where it will hold. The application is obviously important too. Set tap and go. Play with it too much and u can break the bond. The most impressive thing to me is the fact that they are basically free handing this whole job. Doesn't look like there's any lay-out or guides. As far as cutting the brick, it's actually not that difficult to break a clay brick with a trowel if u know where to strike it and which part of the trowel to strike with. The cut also doesn't have to be perfect as the mortar joint will give u some room for error. Def can't do that with a solid concrete brick though lol. Extremely impressive work here

I just built my dream patio and i had to do a lot of block work with cinder blocks and also brick work when i build a wood fired pizza oven and this stuff is not easy work! I did post a video if anyone wants to look at it! I've been in the contracting business for years and the only thing i ever get out of masons is how much damage the body takes over the years! john athas a Mason's trowel near to handle where it connects to the blade is thickened it is almost a quarter inch thick on the blade and tapers 2 the outside points of the diamond that in many many years of practice trial error and perfection these men do it as a living and a passion along with many other men in other trades that require physical labor to accomplish there's a whole plethora of skills that never make it to a TV
