▶In Mega Man X3, we were introduced to Bit of the Nightmare Police. Bit had an incredibly strong design, but his art showed something that the games never reflected: what happened to his shield? Mega Man X3 itself may not have told us, but perhaps later titles hinted to the truth behind its disappearance. What do you think? Do you think this theory is on the money or way off?

My personal headcanon is that Zero fought Bit during the opening sequence of X3, while he and X were separated. I picture it as Zero defending the Base's roof and then Bit shows up and goes "I heard you're pretty strong! Let's fight!", gets his ass whooped and shield broke, then goes "You fool, this was a distraction this whole time! Your buddy X is probably getting taken to Dopplershmirtz Evil Inc. and getting turned into a Maverick! Get bent loser!" then dips out, then cue the Zero portion of the Opening Stage Side note: That Proto-Bit sprite looks sick

What's really interesting with this idea is that it seems to imply that Zero, at one time, also fought against Agile. Seeing as he was either collected by X or was brainwashed by the Counter Hunters during the events of the game, he would have had to do that some time before X2. And it's as that (now 200-year-old) poem said... Merry X-mas to all, and to all a good Byte!

Agile definitely throws a wrench into things. Maybe it's just the trauma of the situation with him?

I haven't played the zero games and was going to ask who the one sprite was but I guess it was agile, the sprite was just hard to tell. I guess it makes sense since the other ones vile, colonel, and bit are from the x series although yeah it is weird cuz you never see them fight.@@ColeFam

Considering the X-Hunters were loyal enough to Sigma that they chose to revive him as well as the fact that some of the X2 Mavericks seem to have been mavericks for a while (Flame Stag was a colleague of Boomer Kuwanger and apparently defected alongside him, meaning he was already a maverick during the events of X1) it's possible that Agile was already around and working for Sigma during the events of X1. It's possible that Agile might've encountered and fought Zero while he was out and about during the events of X1, and that he simply went underground like Flame Stag most likely did after Sigma's death at the end of the game.

Bit's Shield is an oddity in this series. I used to think Bit was using the Shield, the beam saber weirdly portruded out of it (cant blame me, he charges at you and your shots bounce off of him) Even more odd is the panel with Bit w/shield vs Zero in the X5 intro.....which never happened. Like it wasnt alluded to by Zero, Bit, or anyone. Probably Rule of Cool at play here. X3 being outsourced and developed by Minakuchi Egineering would explain the inconsistentcies.

I'm guessing the original game dropped the shield for one simple reason: redundancy. Bit's dash already makes him block shots so the shield would just be overkill. DiVE did find a workaround due to the way targeting works allowing for easier back attacks so the shield could always be on without making the fight unfair.

My Theory is bit probably had a fight with zero and zero broke bit shield. (Btw the word nightmare police is pretty serious and cool)

I gotta say. This was a fun head warmer. I've never thought about the shield in the art. But this reasoning for why it only appears there makes sense. Not going to lie kinda like the interruption That maybe zero didn't necessarily destroy it. But the guy realized that the shield was making fighting the fast and strong zero a pain so he was like "nah this thing aint worth it" and chucked it away

If your opponent's primary weapon is a buster, you want speed and agility to dodge. If your opponent's primary weapon is a beam sword, you want a shield to block. It makes quite a bit [1 frame of Bit flashes] of sense. I have no idea who to thank for my gifted membership but I am very grateful

If you read the Rockman X3 Manga you see Zero destroying a ton of enemies in the intro of Doppler’s attack. You also see Bit talking to Blast Hornet. Most likely Zero encountered Bit early on and Bit survived his encounter with Zero.

I think its like Kings shield, so specially useful to absorb buster energy and shot it back? Created specially to deal against X buuut blonde boy probably ran into him, fought and with his Saber managed ro break it

I mean Bit is a Nightmare Cop so the shield is probably a Riot Shield of some kind. It's meant to help him stop Maverick Hunters from bum rushing him/absorb large amounts artillery fire. Unfortunately it becomes a major hindrance when you have people like X and Zero who are a bit more svelte and quick & love to fight close and personal with CQC "Close Quarters Combat".

It's from the Zero Project ROM Hack. It's really good. However, the Shield in the video was added by hand in post by me. As far as I know, there are no hacks adding the Shield specifically.

Vile and Bit are not he only ones with shields that go unused. IDK about you but I never get hit during the duration of the Third Armor's shield for it to ever get used :U

Thank you! And unfortunately, there isn't a ROM that adds Bit's Shield (that I know of), I animated the shield by hand. Happy to see that it was a bit convincing!

Got me thinking Why is Agile part of Zero's memories summoned in Phoenix's fight As far as I know, Zero never got to fight him, or maybe idk his legs remembered him

He used the Shield in 7 during his boss battle to block attacks and then gives the shield to Mega Man as a reward for beating him. That's the most use the shield has ever seen, I'd say.

Proto Man always had a shield. He holds it in battle in 3, but it doesn't actually deflect shots which I find funny.
