Coleonyx mitratus | Central American Banded Gecko

The Coleonyx mitratus, better know as the Central American banded gecko is a gecko all keepers should work with. They are very similar to the leopard geckos in their care, reproduction, egg incubation, etc. A fun gecko to own and to work with. New color morphs are just now appearing in the hobby so get ready for Coleonyx mitratus to gain in popularity very quickly!

Wow I didn't realize how small they actually are. I'm thinking about raising C. Brevis which I think are slightly smaller even. How do you make a heat gradient in the deli cup?

I just received C. brevis and yes, they are a tiny bit smaller. For the deli cups for small babies, I put them next to a florescent light that is slightly warm. That side of the container is just a bit warmer than the other. But, I feel it is far more important that the adults have a temp. gradient enclosure. The babies can be warmer more of the time.

Feed as many as they will eat. Depends on the size of the mealworm, size of the animal, season, and other factors.

Great question. You can check for the hemipenile bulges or pores on the male. As well, males have small spikes (while knobs) near the vent when looking at them from above.

The worker told me to use a black light so I got it but it doesn’t really show in the cage. It’s not that she won’t eat, it’s just she won’t open her mouth.

As the guy at the pet store how much experience he has had with this type of gecko. :) I feed mealworms and NOT crickets. This gecko is not a fast mover and likes slower moving insect prey. You can feed dubias and an occasional wax/silk/horn worm as well.

They do like to hide, but they do not dig- other than to bury their eggs.

This gecko is so hard to find info on. The banded. We just got one from lll reptile here in CA, the info is so scarce, have you ever had an issue with no eating? We have tried crickets and small mealworms. He is not active at night and want to save him if we can. The reptile store the girl was new and didn’t tell me the right facts. He won’t eat.

Sorry to hear. I always tell people that if the breeder/seller cannot answer your questions, you probably should not purchase from them unless you are an experienced keeper. Do you have a heat source on the animal? What are your temps?

No special lighting but they do benefit from some UVB if you can provide it.

I thought I mentioned this in the video but if I did not, it is fairly easy. Males develop 'spurs' on the side of their body near their vent. Mature males will also show an obvious bulge at the base of their tails. Let me know if you still have questions.

These guys are so cool. Are they handleable on a sparse basis? Looking for a unique, small desert species that tolerates moderate handling. None of my other reptiles enjoy handling and I'd like to interact with one a bit more.

While I do not handle mine, you can of course on a sparse basis. Another option, while not desert, is Paroedura picta. They are semi-arid/tropical, meaning they are VERY tolerant. And handleably.
