I think I'd be rethinking digging a basement so deep. If you want it that deep, you are doing to need a sump hole the size of the cistern with two sump pumps and an automatic generator to run them. The water is never going to go away and will always be a problem. My basement was dug 1 1/2 feet deeper than needed and there is also a spring under the house tiled into a sump. When the power is off the sump does not work, so we added a whole house generator and a back-up sump pump. Better to reconsider plans now than to always have a water problem. In 45 years, it took 7 years of drought to see the bottom of my sump dry.

Just raise the movie theatre up a foot and prevent future headaches. Over the length of that room you'll hardly notice a foot shorter ceiling, but if that's not acceptable then add a step up on the 2nd floor when going into the new area. Stay above the water table and consider the tile to be a safeguard

Cole and Roman, I get a lot of joy watching your videos. I'm a fellowship trained orthopedic trauma surgeon for my day job. I also help manage our family farm. Before going to college I worked in the west Texas oil fields where I learned how to operate heavy excavation equipment. I routinely use the exact equipment on our farm today. After 9-11, I joined the DHS Urban Search and Rescue team and INTF-1. I've had extensive training in collapsed trench and building rescue. I have treated numerous men and women over my career who sustained serious, life threatening injuries of the spine, pelvis, and lower extremities. Some ended up in amputations. I've also been involved in rescues that unfortunately turned into body recoveries. All of these occurred in unprotected trench excavations, some as shallow as only 2-3' deep. I think you can infer from my bio that I know a thing or two about these things and the environment you're are both exposing yourselves to. I feel morally obligated as a physician and a fellow farmer to warn you of the absolute danger you are putting yourselves into. I respect your skills and work ethic more than you know. The geology you are working in is "highly unstable" and prone to collapse based on the sand and active aquifer. I respectfully ask you to reconsider this activity and the absolute danger you are both exposing yourselves to. Dave Brokaw MD

@markh28602 ай бұрын
@teret6719 The best scenario is you put the drainage into the area of the basement first before you dig the basement hole. That will set the depth you can be for the basement/ underground theatre. We are always late to the party watching these. Works done. I would have went to creek, started with the best depth outlet you could and installed up to the edge of new dig for basement at 0.100 tenth grade or little more if you had some depth to give up.. Then dig basement and then you would use the tile for drainage when you got basement dug. His neighbor Ron looked to be busy with other projects to help so he knows now they learned fir next time...ha I'm sure Ron said "o boy" you guys have dug yourself a hole on this one! Glad they are safe and didn't get hurt.

Yeah, I think they picked the hardest way to solve the problem there. I would have gone for a fixed sump pit to start and watch the flow. That said, I admire them for trying and figuring things out along the way.

This comment made me laugh. 😊 Seems like a lot of people are thinking the same thing based on the other comments; i.e. what's wrong with the basement he already has in the house? One comment wondered if he was doing some prepper thing. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me to put a huge structure IN a water table. My first thought was if the house depends on a well for its water, what happens when you direct all the water away to the creek? I didn't research the implications of that. I do have a sister and brother-in-law who flipped houses and one he kept for himself had water issues because in the '50s the neighborhood was not graded/constructed correctly. Also, back then they just used tar to seal the basement and after 60 years there were leaks. The remediation by a professional company was to put a trench around the house, lay gravel, lay French pipe, lay more gravel on top of that, and then cover up the rest with dirt (after re-sealing the basement) to keep the water from destroying the foundation concrete blocks. Water, being a natural beast, wears things down, but loving the path of least resistance found the gravel and the holes in the French pipe and drained it to an appropriate place. They never had water problems again even though the neighborhood was still graded poorly and water was running down from the houses higher up the landscape. The fact that 1) there was no gravel around the pipe Cole laid and 2) when they dumped the dirt back on the pipe they put a lot of curves in it instead of ensuring it was straight didn't make sense to me; especially letting the pipe curve. I lived in an apartment building that was built for officers in the '40s for the local Master Jet Base (Navy) on a tidal flood plain so I've experienced more about pipes than necessary. Bottom line: It's not my home, so it doesn't matter. Just making some observations.

Cole, that water isn’t going anywhere. You’re basically on a swamp. Just cuz you put the pipe in there, water doesn’t magically decide to there all of a sudden. You’re only catching the water In that specific area

This movie theater will be a big mistake. Surprised that Ron or someone older hasn't said anything.

What a load of work you are doing! I hope it was all worth it in the long run. I Can't wait either to see it all coming together.

The second trench/pipe is solid, not perforated. Doesn't require rock or fabric. It's moving water from point A to point B. Can anybody tell me the last time they saw a response to a comment from Cole. I realize there is going to be a lag of a week or two from filming to posting, but he just seems to be pushing the envelope with safety and procedure all the way back to the electrical project in the shed with no acknowledgement of viewer comments or concerns. Comments seem to be a waste of time when they don't get any acknowledgement. This is a fascinating project, but sometimes you want to turn and look away for fear of what they are about to do!! Good Luck Cole, I applaud your ambition!

As my husband says, "He's a farmer." Farmers tend to do things on their own with what they have.

I agree, I haven't seen a response from Cole in a VERY LONG time. I am still curious to know where Justin has been.

@@Kevin_D1I think Justin is at Cole's while he doesn't have other projects. As a contractor, my better paying gigs will always come before my "charity" work for friends and family

If I recall correctly, Cole doesn’t read the comments nor does he respond to them. I’m cringing watching him in that trench with those unstable walls.

How many hours are in a day, being a dad, working on the farm, working on office work for the farm, constructing a house, shooting videos...give some grace.
