If you're jacking up from the main floor, there needs to be a basement support directly underneath also, otherwise the floor joists will sag under the weight/pressure. Also if the floor joists are bowed, cut the nails from each end and flip the board crown up. If the crown is excessive, plane them down to level. Could save some costs. And for the love of god, remember the joists blockers for extra support and to prevent twisting!

When I was in my teens I left home and went to live with my cousin and her husband, they were a professional couple, she was an engineer and he was a heating/cooling expert and also a general contractor. They built a 7500 sq ft home (plus 2000 sq ft basement) they lived in a little trailer on the property until it was dried in then we all moved in.. . My cousins husband is from Denmark and they travelled to Europe often to shop for their appliances, tiles etc for their home. On Sunday mornings we all piled onto the huge extra long king bed and had tea, scones and watched “ this old house”. I was 16 at the time. It truly felt like I was living in a dream. There were some pretty big problems at my home, hence why I left. I will never hear this old house and not think about those many months of this lovely slow start to a Sunday.

That mental support wall might not technically be a full blown support wall, but you should check the span tables for 2x8s. It looks like that span from the outside wall to the other side of the kitchen is way longer than it should be for 2x8s. I’d consider doubling up the floor joists on that second floor if the span is too long for dimensional 2x8s. Otherwise you’ll have a very bouncy second floor.

Gentlemen, The screws and the adhesive on the joists under the OSB, are the best way to avoid 'squeaks' in the floor. The sistering of the joists is also going to make for a much stronger floor. Good job! In my opinion your videos will probably not only entertain, but educate as you're working through each task, as you work on the restoration. Once on the famous TV program 'This Old House', Mr. Norm Abram, master woodworker, was talking about not enough young people wanting to enter the carpentry trade. I think your videos might help plant the 'seed' of looking at a career in carpentry / construction. Thats like the cherry on the sundae, of what you're focused on accomplishing. That is a wonderful thing. Roman, hope you can find a hammer that can hold up to your demolishing. As i mentioned before, you don't need to prove anything. Nothing wrong with 275. Not many 275's around. Just be yourself. In other ways - each of you are 300's, because each of you has different strong points. God gives each of us a gift. Just do the best you can with it, and be careful so you go home to your families in one piece. God bless.

In old houses, like the 100 years old in 1960 when my dad bought it you should sister kitchen joists because ? Fridges, stoves, counters and middle of kitchens islands are heavy. When my Mom had our house gutted and modernized she insisted on having that done. She got fed up with 2 general contractors she found were attempting to screw her so she went to school and got certified as a general contractor herself and took over supervising her house being built above code.

Might think REAL seriously about getting cabinet layout designed and ordered! You have the bones, up..once you get the floor joists repaired and subfloor down...thats the hardest part. Get the walls finished, plumbing, electrical, sheetrock, tape texture paint flooring....you dont want the cabinets holding up progress! This is awesome Cole! Dont forget to write verses, sayings, blessings on the studs and walls before sheeting! Have daddy and momma cornstar, and your in-laws come over too!

You need to get a book called "Modern Carpentry". It has 'span tables' which you obviously need! The support walls you are removing prevent 'deflection' of the floor above. You will have sagging, squeaky, weak floors without them.

my father as well as myself and several cousins worked for the irwin auger bit company back in the 80’s early 90’s. we built products you would be proud to admit you did. they moved the company out of america for cheaper labor and that was the end. my dad was the forger of all the bits and screwdrivers. i was in packaging. we were all happy to work there. it destroyed our community when the left.

Now if only the Bin Site builders had the same attention to detail that Justin has, then it would have been a top level bin site!

Watching you all walking over just the floor joists was terrifying but I cannot stop watching! Another great video!
