It's amazing, I remember the early 70s when the "round cab" JD tractors came out. Being the early 70's, that meant that the old unstyled 2 cylinder antique JD tractors were then 40 years old. That 4840 came out when I was a sophamore in high school and is now just as big an antique as the unstyled John Deere A was back then.

I'm impressed by your ability to repair farm equipment. I'm no engineer, but my dad was an engineer. I remembering asking him if they could build a car that lasted 20 years and he said no problem. He said engineering is a balance of function, durability and cost. You don't want to build things of such expensive materials that the item is obsolete before it wears out. I'm a person who fully amortizes everything I own. But there is a point you have to give up.
