Dad Got ELECTROCUTED... | Planter Preparation 2019

I apologize for the blown (fuzzy) audio at the very beginning and the very end. When I was fixing it my computer froze and the file I was able to edit was gone. This video starts off with me going to a local auction where we are interested in a 61 foot Westfield auger. We also sold a few items we had lying around the farm. There was a really cool Allis Chalmers collection at the auction that were being sold on an Estate sale. We ended up purchasing the auger and after the auction we headed back home to work on more equipment.
Once I got back to the heated shop, I pulled the pump off the back of the sprayer trailer so we could service it. This pump is vital for us to keep the sprayer moving when we are applying pesticides and fertilizers. I brought the pump into the shop and then put four tires on one of our cars (snow tires got removed).
Here is where the bulk of the video begins. We start tearing into our 16 row White 6180 planter. Every row needed to be pulled apart, inspected, and serviced. Dad and I get everything pulled apart. Mixed in with time lapses, I explain why we are doing what we are to the planter and what each individual purpose a component serves. We did not have very many extra parts on hand so once things got pulled apart, we had to stop until they were ordered.
While I was at college, the new parts came in, and we had a new worker show up. Dad, Cooper, and the new guy were able to put the planter back together, and get everything serviced and ready to go. We purchased an guidance system last week and Cooper has been working on getting that installed. Dad also made sure all the row-shutoff units were working and we will be getting those hooked up soon. Our planter and planter tractor are going to have some high-tech agricultural technology advancements we have never had before. We are excited to see how this increases the efficiency of our farm.

The Cornstar I wasn’t sure I would like this Chanel , yet here I am, 10 episodes in now and I just found you yesterday! It’s so great to see someone so young with the family values that Cole seems to have. I first turned your Chanel on to see the episode of the clean up of your grandfathers home. It must have been difficult to find yourself determining what to keep from his life time of collecting. The house itself was the reason I watched, as I find myself strangely attracted to architecture and its history. The farm house is beautiful, good work on the cleanup! Tell Dad cornstar to put a 3 to 4 inch pipe on that filter plug. That is what dad put on our 4430, then just flop a pan down on the ground, no mess! Cole, for petes sake. If your in town for school anyway, im sure some evening you can get yourself some unripped jeans! But, I guess you can buy them that way now. Guess Im just old school. I'm sure it's been said but a set of roll pin punches are a great investment. Buy a set then buy 1 extra for the size on the planter and cut it down so it works in the tight spots.

I operate grader for a county here in Alberta Canada , rate payers would freak if our roads were like that , all our roads are on a gravel program . Every summer so many roads in each area get gravelled ! I look after close to 250kms in my area ! Frost coming out sure softens things up !

I have a rubber line that drops off that filter housing with a plug in the end that keeps all the oil off the frame when you drain it. All our Deere’s with that housing have it and I love it.

To get roll pins out of the frogs I have a pin punch for my air hammer. If you have a short barrel air hammer and a short pin punch you can get in on the ones next to the wheels too.

Very informative I didn’t know there was so many different projects! My moms side of the family had a farm for over 200 years in Michigan. The problem was the city moved so close that they could no longer keep up with the taxes. Then the next heir, up and sold all the land. I believe they had over 1250 acres. The family still owns the house it is a historical house. There are also 8 barns on the property filled with antique tools. I have one of the hand held sickles my great grandfather used.

Cole those pins: Weld two pin size bolts to a piece of metal. weld it into a square longer than the depth/width of the metal pins. Drill a hole on the side the pins come out. Put a bolt through it. Will act like a gear puller. Easy to fabricate. Will make life very easy.

Good job on the maintenance, guys. I operate a vegetable farm in upstate NY and use a white 6100 4 row. I always considered it quite a chore to go thru and do the things to it that you are working on-- until I see you working on a 16 row machine! Too bad the planter doesn't come with the auto repair feature that Cole's jeans apparently have, since the holy knees magically mended themselves about halfway thru the video lol. Cole, those roll pins you said you beat the heck out of to remove, ( you had a ground down bolt as a tool. There are specific punches to remove those, roll pin punches. The top has a ball in the middle to indicate properly on the pin. They come in sets for different sized pins. Also, these specialty punches are good for rivets like brake linings are put on with. Also, have you ever thought about a tire plugging kit for each truck? The cost of one tire & downtime would cover the kit. That & an inflator, made by most cordless tool brands.

A simple way to push the pins...use your custom bolt with C-clamp as a press. I prefer the 1 handed clamps from home depot for speed when there is room. I use the same method for pressing brake calipers

Cole I realize it's a little late lol but several small tool mfg have battery powered tools that have accessories. For example Rigid had a attachment for the Job Max multi tool that's an auto hammer head that can hammer nails in a confined space. It would work in taping out the pins on the Planter. I've used the tool when hammering spikes into the hanger brackets while framing our deck with 12" centres.

If you don't have a drain plug for your oil filter, use some tin foil as a ramp, dam, or chute to guide the oil into the bucket. I have to do this on my f150 as the filter is on top of the axle. Keeps things way cleaner.

I believe a set of roll pin punches would help you remove those pins on the planter. Had to purchase a set for myself and am glad I did.
