When you hear Callie and Colette sing in harmony, do you hear a special, magical beauty in the quality of their voices as they sing together? This is the sound of vocal harmonies that are being sung utilizing the pure, natural, unadulterated intervals that exist in nature; they are not singing by matching the contrived, calculated, set in stone interval tuning of the notes on the piano. In order for the piano to be able to play without having howling, out of tune intervals occurring on non-scale tones or chromatic alterations; all the intervals on the piano are purposely shifted slightly by the piano tuner so every chromatic note will have an equal amount of distance ("equal temperament") between itself and the next note. In natural interval singing (barber shop quartets), you are hearing interval singing that is not utilizing the piano's, fixed, set in stone, 'equally out of tune' distances. When you hear Callie and Colette sing, their melodic and consequent harmonic intervals are changing ever so slightly as the notes they sing arrive at different harmonic locations. (In other words, the combination of a G and a B on a piano will always be the same sound whether it's part of a tonic G chord or as the G and B that makes up part of a G7 dominant chord in the key of C - These notes will not be exactly the same when singing natural intervals. The B leading tone in the G7 dominant chord will be just a tiny bit higher in pitch.) If someone has not been vocally trained to match the notes on the piano, these natural intervals will occur without any conscious thought and without effort. As a pianist myself, I remember the first time I heard a college professor say that the piano is a 'big machine." I was very insulted at the time but over the years I realized he was right. The piano's a great tool, but it shouldn't be used to teach vocal students how to sing. So, if you were wondering why Callie and Colette's harmonies sound so unique and magical, this is why!

Okay, I am a Christian, and I have actually studied history. Yes, Christmas was put on Dec. 25 to take away from the pagan rituals of the Winter Solstice. Jesus was most likely born in the fall, but Dec. 25 was the day we picked. Shay and Colette have been very open about their Mormon beliefs, and the songs they sing during the holidays probably are religious Christmas carols. It's what they celebrate. Respect that, and don't argue about it regardless of what you celebrate. Enjoy the music!
