My take: this episode is about sincere *wishes* Oz has for himself; he wants to be Rex Calabrese to Vic and maybe even a brother and father also, but not without real investment into what Vic might actually want; he wants to do right by Sofia whose stay in Arkham is apparently Oz’s fault, but doesn’t wanna lose his window at getting what he believes he earned

Agreed. I think it has to do with the fact that, even though the Penguin is a despicable character, there's something sad and even tragic about him. It's not crazy to assume that the world hasn't been kind to Oz and that he's suffered from the ridicule, torment, and judgement of others. I think in many ways it's those experiences, and the pain associated with them, that have shaped Oz into who he is. So, ostensibly, Oz is very much a result of the world around him. Oz is a monster, that's for certain, but maybe he didn't "have" to be. Either way, it still wouldn't excuse him for his behavior, but seeing how he's been kicked and stepped on ever since he was a child (a backstory that I believe will be explored as the series continues), I think allows us as humans to feel some level of compassion or sympathy for him. At least, that's my take on it.

Favorite show on tv right now. The acting and script is incredible. All the penguin themes are a fun touch too. Oz’s contrast between being an unpredictable psycho and a likable/mentor/relatable character is quite intriguing. He keeps luring me into a false sense of security. Him constantly telling someone to chill out or find a sense of humor kills me every time. I find myself glued to Colin Farrell’s performance. He’s captivating me the same way Heath Ledger’s Joker did. Can’t wait for episode 4!

The brilliance thus far is that the show does a good job of showing you the human side of Oz, wanting you to empathise with him but it also starkly reminds you that that at the end of the day, Oz is still The Penguin, a notorious villain in the Batman lore.
