I probably haven't heard this song for a good 40 years. My dad loved Glen Campbell and this was one of his favorites. The phrase "And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time" connects me immediately to the early 1980s, where I can see my dad wandering into the kitchen where Mom is cooking dinner. He turns her gently away from the stove, says "Dance with me, honey!" and begins to dance her around the kitchen. And she laughs and protests, and dances anyway. Dad died in a car accident in 1981. Mom died in 2020, nearly 40 years later. That's a long time to go without dancing in the kitchen.

What a true talent Colin Hay is. Real longevity in an industry where most just come and go. The evolution of his skills, his voice and his own songs is really brilliant. As is this well thought out cover. He doesn't need bells, whistles or any grandeur. The simplicity of this version is what makes it special. Well, that and Colin's superb voice.

I love this more than the original, I listen to Colin daily to get through work. My favourite line of any song is “and I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time”. Oh they’re the most heartfelt lyrics ever written. But my all time favourite song is - She was the love of mine. Colin’s Mum must have been an incredible woman, just like mine was, the lyrics fit my Mum perfectly too, right down to the colour green. 💚
