I think he has a point. I think it is a matter of numbers for sony. Personally I´ve been using my consoles mostly digitally since ps3. On ps4 I´ve used the disc drive for 4 or 5 titles. So maybe there is a reason for Sony not to care a lot about it. I would like to have the disc drive just in case but I know I wont be using it a lot.

And he's in a position of access, knowledge, experience, wealth, etc., so he should know better to act like this or treat others this way. As of March 31, 2024, the PS5 disc version has sold more units than the digital version, with 59.2 million units sold compared to the digital version. However, the PS5 is still behind the PS4, which sold 60 million units in the same time frame. Is weird thinking digital is taking over

People consider going from PS to PC because if your "high end" gaming is being forced into an all digital future then you might as well go with the most potent, open and consumer friendly ecosystem. I for one will save up for a good rig instead of investing in the Pro because I'd have to pay the euro equivalent of >1000$ to get the Pro plus stand and disc drive (how is the disc drive 130€ in Europe??). I will go base PS5 performance mode or PC for PS5 exclusives - depending on the length of the exclusivity window and my want to play asap and the Switch 2 will likely become my new "main" for physical media. There are numerous reasons why a disc drive is still essential - no internet dependency, backwards compatibility, ownership, more than one storefront etc. but please keep listing mtx/pc/mobile skewed statistics when the Insomniac leaks have already proven that physical makes up a big chunk of first party sales - about 60% iirc.

Even tho Steam dominates the market, the competition between all the storefronts keeps prices low and sales happen all the time. I’ve amassed hundreds of games alone from Epic, Amazon, and GoG giveaways. Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2: $60 Steam, $70 PS Store. Persona 3 Reload: $40 Steam, $70 PSS. FF16: $50 Steam, $70 PSS. I really really hate the “we dont pay enough for games”. Yes tf we do! Sony already there killing physical, so retail fee goes away. Most paid online games require a subscription for online. Most games have special edition which is additional 10-50 extra with little work. Most games have DLC which are always upcharged. And a lot have MTX which cost NOTHING to make and generate BILLIONS. Spare me with this argument that games were actually more expensive when we all know gaming is more profitable and bigger than ever even accounting for inflation

Sure, but keep in mind that all of the examples you're describing were likely put into place specifically *because* games haven't kept up with the price of inflation. Companies discovered through market research that people weren't willing to pay more for base price videogames, so they found other ways to extract more value (with things like microtransactions, battle passes, etc)-and that appears to have worked, given the data on how many people spend money on those things (especially in otherwise F2P games). I'm not saying that's right, and in fact I basically agree with your point (or at least your implicit point, i.e. "I don't want to spend more money on stupid BS"); my preference would be to do away with all the nonsense upcharges/subscription models/etc and just have games be a little bit more expensive in exchange. But it's worth at least understanding the "why" of the whole phenomenon. Given how bloated game budgets have become, I think these companies feel like they have to make their money SOMEwhere, and so they've chosen these smaller streams of revenue rather than an overall increase in price. (The other solution, which I would love, would be for games to become cheaper to make-and I WOULD love that, because I'm a massive fan of smaller-budget indie titles and VNs and stuff like that-but that appears to be unlikely to happen anytime soon, unfortunately. All we can do in the meantime is vote with our wallets.)

I knew that Dustin had stepped away due to the planned birth of his child and figured that with his absence, he was at home with the wife raising their new baby. Its the principal colin. At that price building a PC isn't far off, and far easier to stomach. I say that as a PC guy. There's 1000-dollar prebuilt systems out right now that match it, without the monthly cost of online multiplayer and cloud saves. With the benefit of multiple storefronts to push the price of games lower. Consoles are supposed to be for the budget minded. at 700 minimum(no drive, no stand, and assuming you live in the US) going PC is now reasonable.

At this point, the PS5 Pro is for people with more money than sense, given that the PS5 has been hampered by extended PS4 cross-platform development. Software development will always favor the lowest common denominator, so even long term, the reality is that the Pro's potential will never be tapped before the PS6 releases. I don't think we've fully seen the base PS5 tapped in the same way as previous generations. Also, Colin talks about the disc drive issue and pokes fun at people considering jumping to PC, where digital storefronts are the norm. Yet so far in this video, I've yet to hear anyone mention the latent annual cost of a PS+ membership in order to access parts of purchased games. That adds to the cost as well over time. So if people are looking at the future and seeing where digital storefronts are the norm, then it might make sense to go with the option that allows for more flexibility in customization, as well as prioritizing a platform that doesn't require an additional service that otherwise paywalls the full offerings of the game. The disc drive issue also foreshadows what likely becomes the new norm for Sony going forward--upselling it as an optional accessory (or added cost) as opposed to prepackaging and selling multiple SKUs. They've done the same thing with the stand with the PS5 Pro. What's next for the PS6? No controller included? The reality is that the market will decide these things when all is said and done. But it's hard not to see a reckoning coming, if larger and larger amounts of people are priced out of the market. As a longtime Sony supporter, they've lost the thread with me this generation, and I don't know if I'll even be moving forward with their next gen hardware. But people get to make their own choices, based on how they perceive value. I guess we'll see what happens.

It's a luxury item and obviously it's not for students and low income people. Does it make sense? Probably not, but I have 2 dual sense edges that I got on launch (1 to play and 1 to charge while I'm playing) and if tommorow Sony would release Dual Sense Edges in new colors I'm quite certain I would buy 2 new ones in a hearbeat, they cost more then half a PS5 Pro. The dig on going to PC where it has no physical media is so dumb to me. It is a clear misunderstanding on what value Steam provides and what value Sony provides. I have games I bought on steam 20 years ago that still work. I bought ps1 games on PS3 that I can't play on PS4 and PS5. One of the main value points Sony and other consoles provided was physical media, them going away from it means they have way less value. The digital library on PlayStation is worthless and will be reset in a console or two. Oh, and guess what, those games I bought 20 years ago also work on a steam deck! Oh, and guess what, all the Steam games I own can be shared with my family for free. Almost like, I hand them a disk. Buying digital games on a console is legitimately stupid. Consoles have wiped the libraries multiple times now. When a company no longer provides the product I want, I go to a better company. Colin thinking it isn't a loss for Sony and the people who are doing it are how I perceived him to mean are stupid; is peak ignorance on his part. If I am forced to pick digital games, why pick Sony? If what makes a console special keeps getting eroded, we aren't going to get them anymore. It is ok though. I will be able to sell Demon Souls remaster for 200 bucks + one day when Sony turns off the PS5 store and it's impossible to get it digitally anymore. PCs are more expensive up front, but you are not paying yearly subscriptions to play online, your games are much cheaper, and your rig will be able to handle pretty much any game for the next long while. Not to mention you can do pretty much anything on a PC, even a gaming PC. I want to see someone file their taxes on a PS5. Once we start getting into $800-$1,000 range (which Sony seems really excited to do so), you should honestly just save up and buy a mid-range PC that will last you a good while. And yes, physical media tends to last longer because they cannot rip the game from your hard drive. We have already seen Sony do this several times already. If I buy digitally, it is usually because there is a sale and the game does not exist physically.

This argument is not as strong as you think it is. I own PC games from before the year 2000, most of which do not work on modern Windows or other computer OSes. I need to rely on emulation to get some games working. I still have a PS2, so my pre-2000 era games still work just fine. Nothing additional necessary. I also keep my old PCs, but before I started buying laptops for myself, I was relying on my parents' old PCs to play games. Because PS2 was relevant for like 12 to 14 or so years, I made it into adulthood to buy one, knowing it would run my old PS1 games, and it does. So, my PS2 was made in 2011 or something like that and is in excellent condition. I also got it new via retail for around $99 because it was very near the end of life. Those libraries can only be lost by theft or by some other tragedy. What happens if you offend Steam or after the company changes hands? You could lose your entire software library. Like I was saying, it's not as strong an argument as you thought.

A console without a disc drive solely relying on its digital marketplace is not the same as a PC without a disc drive. Preservation on PC is almost a non-issue, with platforms such as GOG where you can buy a game and have a backup, I don't have to worry about the service closing in 20 or so years. Console digital stores just vanish, just look at Nintendo, Microsoft or what Sony was planning to do with Vita/Ps3... The way Colin mocks people for wanting to play their PS4 in the future is totally out of touch. It would be wiser to advise people to buy physical games in times when licenses expire, games disappear, services go down, etc.

At that point they have us over the barrel and can set whatever prices they wish. They already charge us $10 a month to play multiplayer in games we already bought and for cloud saves on a console we already paid $500 for. PC is a totally open platform, has multiple storefronts, free multiplayer, free cloud saves, game library never gets lost on an old console, game mods, can upgrade PC parts over time, and it’s a multi-use device that you can do whatever you want on. I love consoles and physical games but I’ve already started moving over to PC because I see the writing on the wall.

If digital is taking over it's by force. Nobody doesn't want to own the gamss they buy. Even digital people, if told the reality of what they're paying for, would largely disagree with the practice. Some wouldn't! Some know when PS6 drops they'll never think of their PS5 again (and true for all past gens). They have no issue spending $70 on something they'll never use after about a 5 year span. Most people hate that idea. If I drop $70 I want to own that game for as long as I want to own it. I don't want a company deciding how long I own it with their supporting of the ecosystem in which I paid for it. If I have the disc and take care of it I'll get at least 25 years out of it, with newer discs lasting even longer now.

You know, I was the guy who traded his PS4 day one for a PS4 Pro. Never regretted it. That said, I have no desire to buy a PS5 Pro at all. The lack of disc drive (I’m a still mostly physical) and just the fact that my launch PS5 still looks and runs great to me. Performance mode is usually pretty good across the board and I just don’t feel the need to get fidelity mode at 60hz Unless it boost current performance mode games to higher frame rates then that might intrigue me as I do have a HDMI 2.1 4K monitor But right now? I’m perfectly fine with my PS5 standard and just have no interest in this upgrade

You guys keep talking inflation but fail to count the decrease in cost of old components. The processor I bought in 2020 was $149, today its $69. The video card was $600 in 2020, today its $299. 1TB NVMe SSD was $120 in 2020, today the same one is $62.99. So even with inflation the cost is a fraction it was in 2020. Its the new components that are rising in price and Sony isn't using anywhere near top of the line in the pro. Also the SSD for the PS5 is $59.99 right now on Amazon. Open Zone is like a souls game or god of war. Its where the game is clearly structured like levels that are connected together in a progression. Open-world means you can go anywhere at any time. You can basically fly around and land wherever.

Disc drives are not sold out on the PlayStation Direct. I ordered one this morning. However they are not indicative of Pro sales. It’s probably scalpers buying them up to resell them for $200.. I got mine to circumvent this because I’m getting a PS5 Pro. I made the decision when Rebirth Performance was so blurry. I know 7 Part 3 isn’t going to run much better knowing how demanding it’s going to be on the vanilla PS5. Not to mention GTA6 on the horizon..

What should scare people is the $1000 USD that people in Japan have to pay for the system. Sony knows that they have that market on lock. They have no problem saying you’re going to pay $300 more than someone else across the globe. It would be different if you had to ship these items in some difficult manner, but no this is Japan. You can get a PlayStation there no problem. You just have to pay big money for it because they know this is the only thing you want to buy anyway so why not get much money out of you as possible.

@@TyranusRex721 "If you don't like the price don't buy it" I hope this is exactly what happens. Consumers collectively have to send the message that we will not pay that much for a console. They will get the message and they will either lower the price or bundle something (a game or an extra controller, or hey even a damn disc drive).

Tbh I think that price point just signals that they've ceded the entire market to Nintendo. People like to pretend they somehow exist in different universes but these are both devices whose primary purpose is to play games

I know it's anecdotal (since it's just me) but the only reason I buy a console anymore (I have them all, and two PCs) is to buy games on physical media, I haven't bought a single game on PS4/5 that were digital (only ones I own were due to a digital code). If they stop producing games on disc etc. I will stop buying and only play on PC, since ownership is about the same yet I get much better 'backwards compatibility'.

Same I only buy games on PC when they're on deep discounts during Steam sales etc. With console I can buy the game physically and then sell it and use the proceeds to fund my next game purchase, so on balance it works out. If they go fully digital then screw them. I'm not playing that game.
