There are many questions - like this one - that show you are progressing in your critical bridge thinking. My answer, certainly with 5332 distribution, would be to open 2NT. This causes a difficulty though... how does the partnership find out if there is an 8 card major suit fit? With the tools that a beginner possesses this is simply not possible, and you will possibly end up in 3NT when 4 of a major would have been better. You will find that there are ways of discovering an 8 card major suit fit in these circumstances, but this is beyond what would be covered in a beginners course.

you can open 2nt and still find a 5-3 major fit using a system like puppet stayman.

What is the openers rebid if they have 20 - 22 points and only four of a suit? At 15m into the video rebids are covered but only "Own 5 card suit", 2NT for 23 - 24 HCP or 3NT for 25+HCP so how is the gap between 20 and 23 HCP covered if no five card suit exists? Or am I missing something obvious? And yet again, I can only say how very grateful I am for these videos, they are simply superb.

Sorry to be slow to respond Simon, this one slipped through the net. With 20-22 and no five card suits you will be using the 2NT opening bid, not 2C. Hope that helps and the bridge is going well.

you can open 2nt with a 5 card suit as well with 20-22 points although you might contemplate upgrading your 22 counts with a 5vcard suit as if it were a balanced 23 count and then open it 2 clubs.
