It actually looks to me Rogue is not responding to vibrate but she is coming to Kat's call rather. It appears you had the vibrate on and Rogue didn't come until he heard his name. How are you sure that the stimulus is what's activating Rogue's behavior here?

Started E collar training on my 14 week old gsp and things are going well, at what point do you need to use the nic function? or is the vibrating function all that is needed as they get older?

Why? She is responding to the cue, so why use the e-collar?

I'm not sure what collar you are using, but I have had great luck with a "sound box" for helping clients know when I'm on the button. I use an old Radio Shack CB radio. As far as I know it works on E-collar tech, Dogtra, and Tri-tronics. You might want to check it out.

My GSP does not generalize from come in the house to outside so I’m not sure how to train the collar. Should I work with him inside with the collar first? He does not come when called at all outside but inside very well.

I noticed that you do not use the verbal "Here" each time in this exercise. Rogue often responds by recalling to you when you call her name and to the visual cue of your outstretched hand down for the touch and treat, which she has learned previously. Wouldn't you have overlaid the verbal "Here" command initially with the clicker training and treating before introducing the e-collar? And if you had overlaid the verbal "here" command back then, why wouldn't you use the verbal "Here" every time when introducing the e-collar? The variability in your use of "Here" sometimes but not all the time is confusing me a bit. Thanks. I always thought the e-collar was a reinforcement (negative) to the dog complying with a known command . The objective is to have Rogue recall to "Here" (verbal and/or whistle) without needing the added reminder of the negative e-collar stimulation. If you do not use "Here" every time you recall her, how is she going to get there?

what is your approach to a pup that becomes scared and evasive when the vibrate comes on? She is great with the kibble and clicker but having a hard time with the e-collar. 14 week old lab

So how old is she when starting this e collar? My pup is only 9bweeks but ive had him since he turned 6 weeks. I know he is too young now but ive never trained with an e collar.

My 6 month old Brittany is doing great with e collar on vibrate in low distraction areas (ie indoors) after only a couple days. Recalls every time perfectly. However as soon as we move outside, vibrate doesn't even phase her, she doesn't even look back. Is it too soon to introduce low level stimulation while outdoors? should we just put more reps indoors on vibrate? or step back to clicker again?

Gary Stidham once we move to collar conditioning, we typically eliminate the clicker for that behavior.

Great video! My dad passed away in November, and I inherited his field bred English Springer Spaniel. I know when he trained her, he attempted to use an e collar with her. When I trained my own dog on a collar, I started out at the lowest setting and worked my way up until I found her appropriate setting. But when my dad first put it on the dog I inherited he turned the collar way up and just shocked her when she didn’t listen. And so now whenever I try to put the collar on, she curls up in a corner to hide or urinates on the spot. I’m pretty sure she’s terrified of the collar, and I’m wondering if you can break a dog of this? Or will I never be able to run her on a collar? I was wondering because I’d like to get my dads dog a collar that is compatible with my current unit, but if his dog is always going react like this to the collar I don’t want to waste my money on another unit. Can I get her to not urinate or be scared of the collar?

I have no actual experience, but my guess would be that you could counter-condition her to accept wearing it, but as soon as you try to actually use it, she'd (get PTSD and) revert to old habits

We started the ecollar but our puppy is 16weeks is not listening at all. Clicker training was great and listens to that. Does this training take some time? How do we get him to listen as he doesnt care about the vibrate sensation.

At some point with this type of conditioning process can you expect a high level of recall without the collar? or are you stuck with it forever ie. will the dog only recall consistently with the collar stimulus once trained this way?

High level of recall without a collar is 100 percent doable, but does take more time and reps!

Jeremy Ringma That interests me too.I have never used a clicker or anything else to teach a dog.I already had two Rottweilers and I didn't need anything.I now have a young American Stafford woman and refuses to obey certain commands.Now I took the e-collar with vibrator and beep because I teach it in a humane way so I don’t like e-shock and I will try a vibrator. Friends who taught a dog with a clicker they then always had to use it otherwise the dog did not obey the commands.This is nonsense to me . The video clip, however, is very fine and comes in handy.+++++++++++++++++++++++

After following your videos on the positive reinforcement with "here" she seems to be responding pretty well. My question is, do you only use the ecollar for recall or do you use it for other commands as well?

I have an ecollar but I don't know what setting I should put it on. He reacts to the sound but not really the vibration at all, I've got it up to 10 and he still doesn't react

DollyBear X I looked these up. Looks like the unit has 100 levels... you may be not using enough for the dog to feel the collar. Also based on the cost of the unit, it may not be a reliable unit. First and foremost though have you built a consistent recall with positive reinforcement?

@@StandingStoneKennels I'm sure he can feel the collar I've felt the vibration at 10 and it's very considerable, yes he's got very good recall that I'm just trying to reinforce so that as he's getting to his teenage stage and wants to sniffing more I can easily get his attention without ruining the recall

Adam Fritzsche this is a little different for every dog. If you are using vibrate on the collar you can start conditioning a pup as early as 12 weeks old.

In the UK these E collars are banned because they are cruel and unnecessary. We train our gundog to world high standards without these cruel collars. Bet you would not dream of controlling a young child with one. Why are you incapable of training and controlling your gundog using your voice and whistle ? It is so sad.
