I was about 4-5 years old (1950-1) when the boy up the road got a J40 for his birthday (in brown). I was so jealous - until I got to drive it... man, it was SO heavy, it took you all your effort to get it going, but even the most gentle uphill slope would bring it to a standstill - all show & no go! My Dad made me a cart out of wood and pram wheels and we had MUCH more fun in that! @5:35, that looks like a 1940s Studebaker.

The early ones in particular were very heavy, made from heavier gauge steel. Years ago I bought a pair from an elderly gent, was one early, the other later, and the difference in weight was very noticeable.

This is a perfect reminder of how kids from my generation played outside almost every day, so many different companies producing toys for outside use like my triang pedal car & my three wheel bike not to mention the soap box car l made out of my old pram chassis, surely they were the better days. It was probably the reason l developed a desire to have the real thing, the biggest & the best, & l did, from the poor mans Rolls, three of them to the real thing plus many more besides !

I would be thrilled to have one of those J-40’s on Christmas morning now and I’m no where near being a child anymore! I did have a small fire engine and tractor when I was a boy here in America. Wish I still had them!

Mine was a green Land Rover made by Triang. It had a folding windscreen and came from Hamleys in London. I would say 1962 vintage, much driven and parked and I still have not got over the bug of keen interest in cars from my childhood era and earlier.

I had a J40 for Christmas about 1957/58 on red, it came from the “Premier Motor Company “ in Birmingham, I think it cost my farther £22 which was about three weeks wages for him.

Very interesting. I saw the old Tri-ang Tractor I had as a small child. Was looking out for the Tri-ang Lotus racing car I had but to no avail. Never seen another like it.

I had a pale blue J 40 back in '51. I remember it had an extendable handle on the boot, that my parents could extend outward so I couldn't go faster than they walked. I was the envy of the neigbour hood kids.
@oldclassiccarUK3 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I've not heard of such a handle before, I wonder if it was a one-off option or something available to anyone that bought a J40?

My Neighbour had a lovely pedal car in 1960s, can’t remember the make, and there Dad made a garage to put it in. My brother and I were jealous too, we made do with matchbox cars 😄

The J40's do remind me of Noddies car or maybe thats just me? It is possible that some of those unidentified models were made on the estate (country house). The handy man was often pressed into service for such things. I say this having watched salvage TV shows. A nice interesting video, thanks. 👍

Yep I think so, some of the older cars look like one-offs

I think I first discovered the meaning of jealousy when at the age of 6 or 7, a friend 2 doors down who lived most of the time at his grandparents house on my street, and I remember too this day him driving this brand new Austin J40 in blue to show me. Love at first site 😍. This is kids for you, we used to keep the boot full of stones just in case we got into a stone fight lol 😂.

It was lovely to see the Austin J40, I had one! It was red. Headlights, opening bonnet and boot, spark plugs, a beautiful steering wheel. I wish I still had it. I think the car had huge repercussions for me, I went on to buy an MG Midget as my first car, not that the Austin J40 was a sports car, but it was open with two seats, so I suppose it was a sports car! I have always had a passion for classic cars, and open cars due to this little pedal car; I now have a Citroën 2CV, owned for the last 36 years, not a million miles away from the Austin J40, I'm just not able to put my feet through and touch the ground!

Hi, glad you found the pedal car collection to be of interest, as a former J40 owner too I know how neat these things are. Thanks for watching!

I was given a Triang Brooklands Racer in 1953. It was similar to the Ferrari badged example you showed but had the thicker tyres with chrome hubcaps. I remember the first part to rust was the tail cone and wonder if that was a common weak spot?
@oldclassiccarUK2 жыл бұрын
Yes for some reason they do seem to suffer at the back, maybe they get bashed about and that weakens the metal. Thanks for watching.

So the Austin pedal car at 1:40 is a Austin 8 I believe.
@oldclassiccarUK3 жыл бұрын
If that's the one registered JOY 1, yes it was the prototype that led to the J40, but based on the Austin 8 rather than the A40 Devon that the J40 was based on

Very interesting didn't realise they made so many different types. Is there a site I can send you some pics of my 3 cars cos I have no idea who made them or when they were made.

The way things are going because of the climate change panic, they'll probably start making adult sized pedal cars ( and I'd probably love to have one!)
