You need a good, strong knife for collecting fatwood. The Schrade SCHF28 is a beast of a knife that gets the job done. This video shows some of my methods for finding and harvesting fatwood using this brand new 2015 design from one of my favorite knife makers.

That knife is a monster! Fatwood is hard to chop with a hatchet for the reasons you mentioned, but your knife did it very well. Fatwood hunting is addictive. It really is like finding treasure. It took me awhile, but once I found fatwood I knew what to look for. I always get it from limbs. I have not found the right stump yet. Thanks Bryan.

I've been watching all sort of video's and found this one again because of your reply Thanx, the reason I'm so interested in video's is because I just got a e-mail telling me my Swamp Rat Rodent 4, and my Rodent 6 are coming later today, on my Rodent 6 I had the top gaurd taken off and it look's like a beefy Ratmandu recently I got my Wicked Tough Saw, and my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet is coming soon, I also use my Skookum Bush Tool as my neck knife, recently I've been going out for a hot cup of coffee, and to sharpen my bush skill's, now your tip on finding fat wood seem's like a great idea, usually I would just buy it, so Thanx, I use alot of different set's and have great result's, but my new set of tool's I think will be my favorite, I've used Silky, Corona, Fiskar saw's, Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe, Iltis Oxhead Hatchet, and my Estwing's, knives ranged from Bokor Plus to Fallkniven and BK'S and O.K.C. Spec Plus, but your Idea I find very interesting and will get me to go out not only for a hot cup of coffee but to go fat wood hunting, you don't know how that perc'd me up.

I like some of the styles of the Schrades, Ofcource the Schrades ate less expensive so for a beginner the price is right. But I like the stainless Fox is using, The N690Co. Bohler Stainless. I also added a Cold Steel Master Hunter in 3V with my Fox Parang Bushcraft Jungle Knife. Which is proving to be a nice carry with my G. B. Small Forest Axe and my Wicked Tough Saw, A super carry for when I Scout a new unfamiliar area, I do alot of solo scouting's.,, .

@SurvivalOnPurpose 10 жыл бұрын
sgtcarro13 They do make a lot of recurves. I'm not usually a big fan of recurves but I have to assume a lot of folks like them because I don't think they would keep making them if they weren't selling. Having said that, I really like this one and a few others I've tried. For example, the SCHF26 is a really functional knife.

Even a pocket trumpet would be a little much with my carry, But I guess I could wake up everyone in the morning heh heh heh, So instead on warm evening's for coffee and, I bring my Homer 4 octave harmonica for some relaxation around the camp fire when we go out as a group. Oh, I also have a Hir n for a Fox Chase it's like a sirt of Bugle/French Horn without valves, That would wake up even the bird's and the Rooster heh heh.,,. heh.,,.

Bryan, I just subscibed to your channel. I have been watching your presentations for a while and while I think that Chris at Prepared Mind 101 and Wingman115 are very worthwhile indeed, you are my number one pick. I share your concepts of what one really needs to know, back of beyond, (no need to be a ninja warrior....at least at the present time, maybe soon?) and I like your common man approach.....and your humor. Sooooo...keep at it...and please try to stop cutting yourself. Ha! Of course with that said, I'm at present wearing a bandaid myself,......ah well. And of course...always remember...never ever throw a knife!!!!!!!!! hee hee >;)

Bryan, let me ask you a fair question, why do some companies charge so little for a knife, while other's charge more, first of all, the new Schrade Co., is not the Company of old, and neither are there product's, for a new company, I see alot of failure's, not too impressive, anyhow I know it's not your fault, but since you have some sort of connection with the company, suggest our concern's, tell them we don't mind paying a little more, for alot more of quality, it's easy to understand what I'm saying, if you understand 5 nickels are better than 2 dimes !!!
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 9 жыл бұрын
Fair question. Here's my answer (mostly my opinion): First, any company selling anything has to make a decision as to what their primary target market is and then create an entire supply and manufacturing chain best suited to serve that intended market. Many factors make up this equation, including materials, labor, desired profit, competition, etc.. Each company has their own criteria for making these decisions. It's easy for you or I to say we would be willing to pay a little more for "better quality" but that may not be true across the consumer spectrum and, even it it could be, where do you place the line between quality and price. Because you can always make something "better" in some way and there is almost always a compromise involved. As for Schrade, I think Taylor Brands has done a pretty good job of resurrecting a brand that was losing the battle to compete in the new "global economy" we now have, (whether we like it or not.) At least from my viewpoint, they have decided to target those of us who need a good quality, very functional tool without some of the frills that add more to the cost than potentially to the usefulness of a piece of gear. You say you see a lot of failures but I can't say I have. Sure, I'm aware of a couple of failures but I also saw Schrade take prompt action to resolve those issues and make the necessary corrections. I, for one, am continually impressed with the level of quality they are able to offer at such a competitive price point. That's why I continue to be a big Schrade supporter and why I'm willing to give them such a large presence on my channel. OK, I'll get down off my soap box now ;-) By the way, I don't understand the nickels and dimes thing. I'll take dimes because they take up less room in my pocket ;-)

On paper Bryan your absolutly right, and I do understand what you said so clearly, but I still have a problem with the way some of the Schrade Knives failed, sometimes a big chunk out of the blade, or broken right at the blade, and handle, that's what I'm talking about, maybe paying their employee's a bit more so they would be proud of their work, this makes sence to me, if to you cut too many corner's, then paying the employee less won't improve the quality we are after.
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 9 жыл бұрын
I have no idea what they pay their employees. But other companies have had issues too. For example the Buck Hoodlum. I think any time you do a high volume of production you will have a few bad ones get through.

I must disagree with the blade being perfect after your batoning.... it's very clear that on the inside edge approximately an inch to 2 inches above the finger groove there is either a chip or a roll in the edge. I would definitely prefer the thicker blade stock of the M Tech extreme Nighthawk survival knife is the same design but is a full quarter inch thick where this one is only 3/16 it also has the exact same steel but micarta scales in a leather sheath also it's cheaper

@SurvivalOnPurpose 8 жыл бұрын
+Christopher Petterson I don't know what you are seeing but I got it out to check again and the edge is perfect. I promise. I know here is an MTech knife that I think was designed by the same designer. I have zero experience with MTech knives so I can't comment on them.

steelsmiter I'm working on the facial hair but the truth is I have never been able to grow much of a beard. Every time I've tried I've wound up looking like Bob Dylan in the movie Pat Garret and Billy the Kid (which is a pretty good movie with a killer sound track if you've never seen it). And I sliced my hand working on a hand hold for a bow drill. Stupid mistake. I know better. All better now though. I took my stitches out last week.

Survival On Purpose It's cool man, you had a trademark goatee going, I'm not saying you should go all Grizzly Adams or anything. Glad your hand is better, and you've got the stitches out. I haven't seen the movie. I hope Bob Dylan's a better actor than a singer, I could never get behind his music.

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid is a 1973 Western directed by Sam Peckinpah and starring James Coburn, Kris Kristofferson, and Bob Dylan. Dylan doesn't do much acting, he just kind of hangs around. If you like westerns it a pretty good movie. And I just shaved so I could let my whole face grow out at the same time for the winter. We'll see how long I stick with it. Last year I did go sort of Grizzly Adams. probably not going there again.
@steelsmiter

Survival On Purpose On the most part, I could take 'em or leave 'em. There's a few good ones, and some I definitely do not like. Coburn was cool, if a little before my time. Kristofferson also did Blade. That was fun :D. I like A Million Ways to Die in the West (but not for its legitimacy as a western) and also Jackie Chan's Shanghai movies (same stance on their legitimacy as westerns). I liked Clint Eastwood more than The Duke. Actually I really don't like The Duke. Mosly Clint Eastwood. The Walker 48 was a hell of a gun once they got it to stop exploding. I did see some of Coburn's more modern-esque military flicks, and they were good. One western of note that I really do like for its legitimacy as a Western is Django Unchained (Incidentally, Jaime Foxx made a cameo in AMWTDITW).
