Plastic Crack? We joke about the similarities of addiction in Toy / Action Figure collecting but there are some real world destructive habits that sneak into this Hobby that my Wife and I wanted to talk about. It is seldom discussed, but I wanted to bring to light so you can avoid some pit falls, and gain some real insight from the women who studies me as her personal experiment. She explains some of our collecting behaviors.
I've gone though some dark times with a much more sinister force of alcohol abuse which I talk about in this below video: • From ALCOHOLIC to Toya...
On a much lighter note please check out Retro Rags Limited if you would like a Justice Cury shirt or the other really cool designs: retroragslimit...
Plastic Crack is a wonderful Toy Documentry that you will LOVE. I dont make a dime off of it but I am so convinced that you will like it that if you pay for it and dont, I will refund your money.

I think as toy collectors, we’re trying to attain the one thing we can’t have. A time machine that takes us back to a summer, or a Christmas as a 10 year old. When the world was more simple and we had our whole lives ahead of us. When our parents were younger and our grandparents were still alive. When my mom would take me shopping and buy me a He-Man Figure and everything felt right w the world. No matter what I buy to try and connect with these feelings, nothing comes close. Nostalgia, at its core...is sadness. We’re longing for something we just can’t have.

You are correct, ….. but I have collected mainly those toys and old aurora monster model kits from my youth specifically because they were sold off/gotten rid of by my Mom when I left for college. That doesn't account for the new items that I've collected since the 90's. No, those are a direct result of my surviving two (count 'em, two) divorces ! And judging by the way his "better half" looks around the toy room, I can read exactly what she thinks of his collection. And it ain't good. I've seen that look before.

I agree to a point, but I actually have a passion for vintage toys and 80s pop culture as a whole, for me there’s an aspect of nostalgia it it’s more that this is what I love, like others like going on holiday a lot, being a movie buff and being into fishing for example

This video and even this first comment are so profound. It really caused me to pause and reflect on what void I was trying to fill with my Vintage GI Joe (1964-1978) collecting. I like what she said about having it be a slice of life not being consumed by it. I think it’s especially awesome to do what you love but with other people and find a way to connect and build relationship with others.

My collection exploded and expanded after a highly stressful time in my life where the only solace I found was in items (toys/ collectables) that reminded me of being a kid, a much simpler and stress free time. The whole "chasing the dragon" analogy is 100% accurate.

I have spurt of spending hundreds on figures, then stopping because I’m realizing I’m out of money. My problem is I see a figure a like and I know I want it, but I worry about the prices going up, missing the deal, not finding the figure again. I've been a collector for 12 years, and lately I started to feel bothered or suffocated by the need to buy more figures, I see that I am addicted, I spend around half of my year's income in action figures... I need to put myself some limits, and start selling stuff I don't really care or repeated figures, 'cause I'm also running out of space

Start doing flea markets, toy shows, and ebay.... You'll catch a new high....making money.... I partially paid my house off by selling my old toys that I didn't care about anymore. Also, after working your ass off at a show or flea market...trust me, you won't WANT to buy anything after you see how hard it is to make that money. Take the money and PAY OFF ANY debt you MAY have....

Dude big ups for being honestly and straight forward. I see people buying 2-5 hot toys a week yet they video themselves walking into apartments. This is a real problem in the toy community that I want to comment on but am afraid. I have a modest collection but don't feel the need to complete collection. More people should see this video and think about what they are doing. Addictions come in different forms.

Can relate alot to this video. Especially the sitting on cats part, they just wait to be sat on and attack you for not noticing them. Seriously though the parts about addiction, spending money you cant afford for things that are not that important in the grand scheme of things. The guilt of spending money you shouldn't of, the resentment you get for being selfish. The avoidance and projection of your own addiction onto others. It is first world problems and there are worse things to do but everything needs to be in balance like mayagi said.

Over the years what has been helpful to me was setting a limit on the number of figures. Mine has always been at 20 figures only. Anything beyond that I have to start selling off. I only collect figures that I cant live without and not necessarily ones that I find cool. 20 is just an arbitrary number but it has been very helpful to say the least.

Started collecting when couldn't find/afford the 1:1 scale, now much older having few real ones, having a dedicated building. First floor museum/toyshop, ground floor men'den, garage & workshop. I live, happy married, in a dream world. Stressed from work, 10min in my den I am refreshed. Proud lifetime memories. Addicted as I am, still pursuing, never saw it an investment, but spending money to keep myself(&wife) in sane, in this insane world. When my toys arrive large and small it feels like Xmas, privileged to acquire something special, esp. when you cant get it a shop! What is addiction for one, could be healthy to another, as long nobody is hurt...

First of all. This is a great video. You are really brave to discuss this. Plastic crack looks to be a great documentary. I must admit I’ve had a real bad problem with collecting. You seem to trade one problem for another. I’ve gone cold turkey and have gone from collecting 50-60 or more Black Series, and the same Marvel Legends - I’ve got rid of 90% of my Marvel range and have about 30 figures left. I have slashed my Star Wars collection in half and have about 85. After the Bib Fortuna I’m happily done. I’m not having stuff in storage boxes I’m going to display them. Not being cruel to others, but for myself I do think I’m an idiot not having stuff I’ve spent good money that I’ve not even got on display or even play with occasionally or pose and photograph.

I can definitely relate to everything you both said. I have been a collector my whole life but I was also an addict for 15+years. Some would say I still am because I still smoke weed. However my demon was opiates. Ive been clean of thise for 7+ years now but I definitely ramped up my collecting with the money I no longer used on drugs. However due to collecting like crazy before my drug days. I already knew that I had to keep it focused on just the things I truely enjoyed. I stared with superheros to start. Until I came arcoss the Transformer SS86 line. Once I saw Grimlock and looked online at other characters. I saw how close they were making them look to the OG cartoon. I was hooked. I still kept it focused and stay pretty well in my lane. One of the bigger problems these days is how deliberately toy companies play on our FOMO and have horrible distribution. Far worse than it ever was. So even staying in my lane these days requires at least 2 pre orders a month unless I want to pay double on Ebay for it. That certainly doesn't help the addict side of our collecting.

I associate spending hundreds of dollars on inanimate objects with a mental disorder. I used to do it. I gave away thousands in exchange for plastic rubber dolls from an Asian company called Hot Toys. Until one day I figured out the toys had no residual value. It’s one thing to say an object is worth a certain dollar amount. It’s another for what people are actually willing to pay for it. So now I’m out a lot of money and stuck with an assortment of toy dolls no one wants to buy. Now that I want to buy something useful like musical instruments to play. I’m stuck paying off the debt for these worthless toys that serve no purpose. Do yourself a favor save your money for a rainy day and to purchase things that you can put to good use. That serve a practical purpose.

How about buy what makes you happy. And if toys/collectables are one of those things, then go for it. You had a problem with debt, and perhaps your own mental issues. That doesn't mean it's the same for everyone who likes or collects something. And it sounds like your now just trading one interest for another, and are now trying to justify your new one to yourself.

Based on decades of hoarding 1. Do not buy separate elements when you need a whole, complete run to enjoy it. 2. Do not buy when you feel like being ripped off or pressured by the seller/producer 3. Do not buy for inflated price just to have a peace of mind. Relieve that collection is completed will NOT last long. 4. Do not buy things that you are only moderately interested in even if the price is good. 5. Would like to see some of your advice

With any addiction we can really easily slip into the traps in any addiction. Denial being the main one. Not long ago I looked around my bedroom that doubles up as my hobby room and I just honestly thought - who on Earth lives like this? Who on Earth would want to live like this? looking at it that way made me hellbent on sorting it out. Now, I collect maybe 1-2 figures a month and a movie on 4K or Blu-ray or an album. That’s it. I save my money now.

Luckily I have other hobbies that I'm into. I enjoy hanging out with friends, listening to music, watching wrestling, and so on. I believe there's a fine line between addiction, and being invested. We all just gotta find ways to balance it out in our lives so that we don't fully fall into addiction.

Back in 1998 I decided to re live my childhood by "investing " in 50 or so Hot wheels new on the card. That got me interested in collecting. I still have my original 67 year hot wheels from when I was 10, so thought 98 cars may increase in value too. This started years long addiction in collecting diecast , primarily vintage, from local sources like the flea market. I started collecting used HW and matchbox from peoples lots at the flea market, and soon had hundreds, eventually thousands. I'd pay fifty cents to a dollar 50 for examples open. I then decided to stock up for a future Toy store to give me something to do in 20 years when I retired. BIG MISTAKE. I collected pretty much anything vintage or with perceived future value ( Millennium Barbies, for example). I found a good source of 1/18 cars, discounted at a local toy store, and closet space started running out. I had around $8000 invested in stupid toys! THEN The Twin Towers fell, and Toy demand completely disappeared , pretty much forever. Around 2015, values still werent really doing anything, so I decided to take a big loss on my 40 cases of MIB Hot wheels, selling for 30 a case (cost 85). That gave me a little more room. I then found a guy to buy my 100 1/18 Cars for 10 a piece , losing 5 to 10 on each car. Finally, my collection has stabilized around 2500 items. I can actually some closets and nothing is stored outside. I still have the more valuable stuff, but may have to give it away below cost as I need space or I get older. This is a common story. Suggestions for collectors: Set a small reasonable number for your collection. No more than 1 shelf, 1 closet, etc. Sell off what you have now to buy more stuff, selling at least as much as you buy. DONT spend extra money on storage boxes ( like 48 car collectors cases), that add cost but really NO value to your collection. Old shoe boxes are excellent storage for hot wheels when they are insulated with paper towels between layers. Be aware diecast and MOST other things will NEVER be investments - you WILL lose money collecting, despite what you feel or hear about it. The person selling will always tell you what a good deal it is or what a great investment LOL. Dont let things grow out of control because you Love collecting. With caution and planning , you can still enjoy collecting on a small scale. Try to sell Locally - shipping and insurance will eat you alive, even if its just a 1/64 car! Know your Product! I have recent been buying vintage stereo equipment and have ended up with 5 amps and receivers 70s and 80s. I have a much better chance of actually making money collecting those! One final note - As of Now - NASCAR is Dead. i have several hundred various scale NASCAR that I cant come close to selling, even at a loss. Good Luck to Everybody!

Hi Mrs. Justice, ive read that putting items in virtual carts delivers the same chemical reward as actually purchasing. One thing I've always done is shop,on that high, & then edit my pile down significantly before checking out irl. I also take pictures of anything i want to buy & that becomes part of my editing; looking at the photo im reminded of finding that really sweet rare valuable thing that i don't need & isn't a main line collection of mine, so other than that thrill of the hunt, rummaging through the pile, does that toy do it for me? I suspect these practices of mine have kept my collection from becoming an addiction problem. I play & process using toys, like they're therapy tools. I don't have work or social life or even the ability to go out and enjoy the day because i became physically & mentally disabled in my 20s, so toys really are my main source of joy, accomplishment, connectivity and the good parts of my life are behind me so holding onto the past & remembering times that were better & less bleak is beneficial to me. Toy collectors on disability is prolly a whole topic in and of itself.

Yeah, I had to definitely tone down my collection. I had a huge batman collection, bought everything I can find. It started with the 89 batman collection, and spread like mold on bread. I ended up selling off most of it, and now focus on things that mean something to me, such as anything related to Robin Williams, or sweedish chef, or Jason voorhees, or anything else that holds some sentimental value to me (but still only to a certain point), my purchase has to have made an impact on my life, not just random things I think look cool. And even that is evolving to turning that in to display pieces.

Pop Culture Garage That's how I've always done it. I collect things that I have an attachment to, that have sentimental value to me. Well, mostly. I try to avoid buying random things, even if they might look cool. I've been pretty successful, though not ALWAYS. But yeah, I guess that lets me know that I'm not going overboard...for the most part. It isn't overtaking me. Not yet, at least.

I did come across a Cobra Terrordrome on eBay and the seller was trying to sell it for over $46,000, and I reported it to eBay, but that seller was trying to insult me, because I would not fall for the con game this person was trying to sell. I will probably be doing a video of my experience with that person hopefully this weekend on my channel.

@@totalrobot I agree. This is why I don't fall for the con artists that try to overinflate the price, because of their own views on the price. That person seems to think, that just because they had it in a humidity controlled room in the state of California, had it graded by the AFA 11 years ago, and time that it had been before that person put it on eBay, that is what it took to increase the price to an outrageous price, that is double the price of what I am paying for a 2018 Dodge Journey SXT, and it is a plastic playset for that price? This is why, if you collect anything on eBay, do some research on it at other website retailers that offer the same thing, but at a lower price, and put some pressure on the con artists by reporting them, otherwise it will not stop, and it will continue on with the hyper inflation, in my opinion.

I’m trying to understand my toy addiction and found your video. I don’t spend bill money on toys. Rent, bills, and food come first BUT, I’m spending all my extra money on toys. I’m not saving anything and I feel guilty about it. In fact I’m starting to dip into my savings account. It’s so hard to stop. How can I stop when I’m in the middle of collecting a line? But like you said, once you finish collecting that line then what’s next? Toy collecting started out as fun but now I’m starting to feel guilty about it.

So true. Once I finish obtaining the figures I want from a toy line I almost can't believe it, its finally complete, then I kinda wonder, now what. And I definitely agree only collecting what means something to you, not try to buy everything. I personally don't collect MOC and do not like AFA graded, too expensive and don't like the look, never had action figures in plastic blocks as a kid and don't want to start now. Not every figure needs to be mint and complete either, my opinion.

I've broken my own limitation rules I've set for my collecting. I started out being strictly '82 straight arm Joe's. Then moved to '83 swivels and the entire line of 82-83 figures and vehicles . Then it grew to " ok I'm just gonna do 82-84 Joes" Months later.... I found a sweet deal on a near complete '88 Night Force Night Striker. Now I'm completing this monster. I clearly have a problem

After much introspection about why I collect I found that I was trying to recreate the security and comfort that I would get when my mom would buy me Masters of the Universe as a small child. When I feel anxious about not being worthy of love buying toys would temporarily alleviate that anxiety and remind me of the warm feeling I’d get when mom would buy me something. Needless to say I’ve been in therapy for years dealing with the short comings both of my parents had. Still love Masters of the Universe though…oddly enough I used to be a marvel legends guy but I stopped buying them. Not sure why actually. I see them in the store and think “oh those are cool” then keep walking. Guess the dragon has become Masters of the Universe origins now.

clizzle of 420 If you don't plan on selling, then why aren't you opening them? To me, that's the ONLY reason to keep your stuff sealed. Obviously, things are worth a lot more if they are mint. I think you should open them. Look, none of that stuff is going to matter once you leave this world. You aren't taking any of those toys with you, so why not enjoy them? They obviously don't hold any monetary value to you. They're not an investment. So what's the harm in doing so? Life's too short to buy things and then not use them. They're pieces of plastic, not solid gold bars.

When i was a young and single man I would buy figures just for the hell of it. Now that i have a family, i responsibly buy a figure now and then. Its possible to be a responsible husband and father and still enjoy your hobby. One day my collection will go to my children. It will be up to them what they do with it.
