Rockhounding in Michigan on Lake Michigan finding awesome rare Petoskey Stones!
These are actually 350 Million Year old Fossils turned into rock. Stay tuned tomorrow for another video showing these polished up, they look amazing after the transformation!
This area is open to the public, and you are allowed 25 lbs of material per year to collect in Michigan as long as they are in the permitted areas, some parks you cannot collect.

That's the rock I pick up more than any other. It's the state stone of Michigan. I find them in Lake Huron. Those dark spots are bad. They look sort of dull when you polish them. Not a deal breaker, but not ideal. Charlevoix is pronounced "Shar luh voy". Also called "favosites". I make little stone turtles out of Petoskey stones.

Hey! I meant to get back to you recently, don’t think I did. We should get together that would be fun, I’ll be in the area this summer. Yes thanks for the correct pronunciation on that, I wasn’t sure. Polishing them today actually with part hand and part hand sander. I’ve really enjoyed your videos also and am subscribed to your channel 💯👊

@@TheCrystalCollector I'm sure I've mispronounced a ton of things on my videos. I live right across the state from where you were, so those names are all very familiar. I have hunted rocks at that park. I actually like my spot on Lake Huron better. I find both Petoskey stones and puddingstones as well as other fun stuff on the same beach. Let me know when you'll be in Michigan and I'll try to get together with you.

Not a bad spot for shore finds. Last time I was up that way, I actually brought a mask and snorkel and made my way out to a gravel bar where I was finding them softball size and bigger, but MAN it was COLD!!!! (Probably didn't help that i did this in NOVEMBER, but you hunt the rocks when you can!!!! And yes, everyone thought I was crazy.) I'd say for shore finds, these are some of the larger ones I've seen in a long time. And if Matrix gets any more adorable, my PC won't be able to display your videos, so tell him to tone it down a few notches!!! :D

Picking gets better after a good storm. The wave action brings in lots of new stones as well as turns the beach over. Late fall before ice is my favorite time to hunt, normally have the beaches to yourself and it storms . If you get to the Upper Peninsula and Lake Superior search for Aggies and bring a black light for yooperlites.
