As someone with childhood memories saturated with song...being played in car rides around my little Kentucky home town, or driving with my dad for hiking/camping trips... I'll testify that I love this version. I feel it stays very true to the original in all the ways that matter: the mood, the delivery..etc. It sounds to me like, it was just recorded the way he probably wanted to record it initially, but didn't have the resources to at the time..the original, and the whole "Hints[...]" album that it came from was meant to be a demo, I'm pretty sure. Also, I love how that one part that was kinda subtly metal in the original is now heavier and clearly metal 😂 but just briefly... again, I think it honors the original vibe. The tweaks are pretty seemless, I think.

VERY WELL said, JRDRA997! Ed’s mature voice only enhances the true beauty of this iconic rock song! Here’s a pretty cool story. So, waaaay back when Shine came out I was automatically a Collective Soul fan! I had a buddy that was a hardcore Led Zeppelin game he heard Shine and he told me it wasn’t going to last as a true rock song through the ages. Well, I was at his annual birthday party with a lot of our old military buds. Loud music, three beer kegs, among “other” party favors, lol. My Zeppelin buddy approached me and asked me, “Don’t you think Shine is a spiritual song because it’s lyrics including the word heaven in the song and it’s reference to “shine down on me?” I began laughing my ass off and my rebuttal left him standing with a blank stare! I asked him if he thought Highway to Heaven was a spiritual song because they sang about Heaven? About 15 minutes later, my buddy asked if I had my Collective Soul “cassette” so we could play it at his annual bash! I think he became a Collective Soul at that point in time! SHINE ON!

@RetroSoulGirl4 жыл бұрын
The original from 1994 that played on the radio used a regular drumset! Shane Evans is on the drums and is credited on the '94 Atlantic Records release. Only the 1993 version off the indie label Rising Storm that Ed made before he got famous used an actual drum machine. But finding that song/album is extremely hard and rare now. I'm a diehard Collective Soul collector and I can't find it at all.

Love the new album, love this song & loved them in concert the other day, but the way he's singing 'down' after 'heaven let your light shine' is ruining this new version for me.
