I also think it’s really frustrating how seinen readers treat skip and loafer. Like, they read a seinen inspired my shoujo, liked it, and then instead of reading what it was inspired by they went “This is the best it will ever be, no shoujo could ever beat this” just because it was marketed towards then and had an art style that was similar to what they normally read. I really like skip and loafer and it inspired me to get into shoujo. I have since found shoujo series that I like a lot more. They just have to make the effort to read outside their democratic and they’ll find many series with what they liked from skip and loafer and other seinen. That is why I really appreciate these videos. Thank you Colleen!

From Far Away is so good. It’s the only manga I’ve found yet where an isekai protagonist doesn’t magically learn the language of the new world. It also sticks really well to the main plot with satisfying resolutions for everyone.

This is the first time I've heard about Tengu's Love but I've been sold with your description of it already! And as a fan of Skip and Loafer myself I think it's really unfortunate how, due to its visible inspirations from shoujo, many people, who otherwise don't have any knowledge about this demographic, decided to make it their token "shoujo" and use it as a talking point to diminish the whole demographic. I wish series like this could instead make people a bit more curious about shoujo and encourage them to check out more shoujo titles, but unfortunately it seems it is rarely ever the case. I honestly can't blame you for being bitter about this, but I am really sad and disappointed that a discourse like this is even happening around this series

I was already excited for Firefly Wedding when the physical got announced! Was surprised to find out it was a Shojo through this video. I really, REALLY need to read Children of the Whales. I love love loooooove how you pair series up for this, its hard to do 1 to 1 comparison of Shounen series to Shoujo series because even series in the same genres tend to be very different so going off of vibes is a great way to do it. I havent gotten to reading it yet (Viz please rerelease it) but From Far Away with Dunmeshi is perfect because they both have very similar JRPG inspired vibes (FFA always reminds me of the Tales Of series when i look at it, especially the games illustrated by the late Mutsumi Inomata) with lots of fun and fantastical things. Same with pairing Yakuza Fiance and Firefly Wedding, both violent series with yandere MMCs and a strong core love story. (though the latter def has the healthier romance from what ive seen lol) It makes me wanna check them out more than i already did, and the other recs are great too! Also i loooove the animation on the panels, it looks so clean! Great video as always!!!!! For future videos id love to see recommendations for series similar to Spirit Circle or Wind Breaker!

Dorohedoro would be Tomie, or any Shoujo/Josei by Junji Itou. The Mangaka of Dorohedoro cites Junji Itou as a huge inspiration for her works, and she's a big fan of him.

Cannot second the recommendations for Children of the Whales and I See Your Face Turned Away enough! The latter I only recently discovered (mainly because of the stunningly soft artwork), and I remain so impressed by just its sheer presentation as well as storytelling. I should also give Hachioji's Specialty Tengu's Love another look, I totally wrote it off in passing off the cover art 😅 Firefly Wedding was almost a bit too crazy for me (self-professed yandere skeptic haha), but I was definitely hooked and intrigued enough to keep reading it anyway

Very unrelated but what are your fav horror supernatural mystery shoujo /Josei that have no or little romance? I think they were the titles looking back that got me most into manga/anime like petshop of horrors, tomie, himitsu top secret , Tokyo Babylon, Yami no matsuei, Ghost Hunt , Count Cain series etc but most of these series were old when I found them and I struggle to find more now that are new. Its kinda funny i found them in my not like other girls phase not realizing they were shoujo 🤣

You must read the manga! The anime is so watered down and besides, it barely moves more than a manga panel, so take the chance to look at Aya Kanno's amazing art. There's one (1) thing I give to the anime: the voice cast. It was only thing that kept me watching while I wept my fav manga got such a sad effort for an adaptation. Especially at time when we started to get some good shojo anime again.
