Hello! And thank you all so much for all the love on my first few videos. I'm excited to start making KZbin content and I can't believe how much my channel has already grown.
Since a lot of new people have been finding me, I figured I may as well do a manga shelf tour! So come along as this self proclaimed shoujo connoisseur gives you a look into their manga collection.

As someone who hangs out a lot in the booktube community, I wanted to say that this was one of the most genuine shelf tours I've ever watched. It's very obvious you feel strongly about each volume on your shelf (perhaps excluding those belonging to your boyfriend) and that they're all precious to you in some way. Hearing about all the thought you put into them, the ways you've gone about collecting, and just your general opinion on each series was lovely to listen to. I was wondering, particularly as you mentioned From Far Away and Red River at the end of the video if you'd ever be interested in doing a video comparing the isekai of the 90s and 2000s with how the genre has changed and gone from being primarily about stories aimed at girls and woman, to one that's largely seen as being aimed towards a male audience? I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts

Thank you so much! That means a lot, I felt like I struggled giving good commentary in this video so I'm happy to know it came across better than I had thought while editing it. That's a really interesting idea though and I'll definitely give that some thought.

It's really cool to see people who have smaller collections sometimes, because you know that everything they own means something to them. Your collection is really nice, and I love that you took the time to show off some volumes you like, and talked about how you feel about different series 😊😊 Since you're such a big Chihayafuru fan, have you seen the live action movies? If so, were they good? I recently started watching the anime, and it's quite unique and fun
@ColleensMangaRecs

I enjoy keeping my collection smaller too because they're all series I like and not just ones I've gotten just to have! Some are definitely nostalgia series but even those have meaning to me in some ways. I've actually never seen the live action movies but I've heard they're fun to watch still if you're a chihayafuru fan!

@@ColleensMangaRecs I'm the same way with my book and manga collection, I only really want ones that I enjoy a lot or that mean a lot to me. I still have my first few volumes of Say "I Love You" because it was one of the first shoujo anime that I saw back in 2014, so it's nostalgic to me, but I don't care for the story anymore.

Really appreciate your content for expanding my view on anime and manga! I grew up watching/reading mostly Shounen and I knew some Shoujo like Lovely Complex and Fruits Basket, but as a kid I thought that boys shouldn’t read shoujo (embarrassing to think that I had that thought). Thankfully I grew out of that mindset as I became a teenager and I’m open to watch and read new anime/manga! Keep doing what you want and I’m excited for the future!!

I probably only own 4 complete series, but I was really proud to finally finish it. I’m hoping to finish my Yona collection too! I’ve currently got through Vol. 21. I loved watching this though! I was looking through my Amazon Order History recently and was astounded to see that back in 2014 I bought the Fantagraphics release of Heart of Thomas for $28 CAD and now used copies go anywhere from $200-500 price range! I try to be really selective about my physical collection now, as I am worried about the logistics of moving and having to carry so much around all the time (especially since I can't really imagine owning a house or having somewhere to live permanently). I still have a bunch of my old Shojo Beat I held onto since I was a kid and this video brought back a lot of warm, fuzzy feelings. Seeing your copies of Please Save My Earth and the other titles Viz released in the mid 2000s made me nostalgic for that era of publishing. If companies were open to putting out reprints of PSME, Angel Sanctuary, Kare Kano, Kamisama Kiss, etc. I'd buy them in a heartbeat (despite the space issue). When companies like Yen Press put out the new releases of series like Fruits Basket, I do miss the old author sidebars and commentary, despite understanding it's probably due to the author's embarrassment/distancing themselves from the past or the privacy of the editors/assistants involved in the stories. But I loved them, despite them being the bane of many a mangaka's existence to have a writing mandate. It's not really a staple in shounen manga, aside from a brief comment at the end of a volume, so it did make you feel closer to the author, despite that probably being a strategy by the publishers and editors in some part. Like Arina Tanemura's Penchi de Shakin (or something similar). And Furuba's mangaka talking about JRPGS... So there's just the nostalgia for the fonts used in old Shojo Beat and Tokyopop, that can't inherently be replicated by the same releases today. I think a video about the sidebar commentary could be interesting. I'm getting a bit off-topic, but your videos are well-edited and stirring up passions for my old collection as well. :) Thanks for the video. I need to invest in some better shelves!

When I'm reading any series from Kyousuke Motomi, I always check her little sidebars because she is one of the funniest mangaka. She'll talk about how she plays Pokemon Go or how she thinks all mangaka should be muscular and I'm laughing every time lol

My first step into the world of Shoujo was Fruits Basket. I binged all three seasons of the anime last year and loved the series enough to grab the entire Tokyopop and Collectors editions. In addition to the stories being quite enamoring, the art style of Shoujo anime/manga are gorgeous. I have to say you have a wonderous collection, thanks for sharing. I can clearly see you have such passion for Shoujo and the various series you own. My own collection varies from stuff like Berserk and Claymore to Fruits Basket, and Ao Haru Ride. It won me over the second I saw the book cover when I picked up from the store lol Can relate to owning and keeping manga/books because of the memories and how long you owned them, I have Scott Pilgrim paperback volumes that are bent and pretty beaten up but those were my first books I owned. Also know the struggle of just having uncompleted series. For the longest time, I haven't been able to find certain volumes of Wake Up, Sleeping but after what felt like an entire year, I was finally able to get them lol. Then there's OoP stuff like We Were There and Lovely Complex which will stay incomplete cause no way can I dish out or justify $200 for just 2-3 books lol Will need to add Chiyahafuru next on my list!

Thank you for taking the time to go through your collection! I enjoy seeing what other people are into and learning about new series. I've never heard of Chiyahafuru before, but since there's an anime I'll add it to my "To-watch" list! Honestly Kodansha is the worst when it comes to printing series they release, it's annoying. They have at least a couple series I'd buy if they were out in print. I hate watching an amazing anime, finding out there's a Manga and it's published in English, then seeing that it's digital only! I personally have a hard time focusing on reading Manga on a screen so it's always frustrating when that decision gets made. Digital-only series also aren't often advertised which makes it that much harder for it to gain an audience. Oh man, I know what you mean when it comes to Natsume's Book of Friends! I just got into it last year and the volumes are slowly vanishing D'= Trying to collect it is a nightmare. Viz is also terrible at reprinting what they deem "less popular" series. Keeping that in mind, plus the printing issues already going on, I can see it being.... a while before they get restocked, unfortunately. I also wasn't that into Yona of the Dawn when I first tried watching the anime back in the day. I watched maybe two episodes and then stopped to watch something else. I keep hearing amazing things about it, though, so I might have to give it another chance.

I'm very lucky to be bilingual, since Chihayafuru has been licensed and is in print in French. Last time I went to a manga shop, they had a whole shelf full of the series, and a huge stack of the volume that had just come out at the time, volume 35. Also, fun fact, 7 SEEDS was licensed in French for the first ten volumes, after which it stopped printing due to licensing issues. I really want to track down the first 10, as 10 is better than nothing, but they're really hard to find since they have gone out of print! Also, just want to say for those of you who don't know, Ceres is considered a problematic series because the main girl's brother in the series is always lusting after her (it's incest). I would strongly advise anyone who is uncomfortable about that, myself included, to avoid the series. It does have a very interesting plot, but the incest is very strong.

I think also watching/reading more of X will let you understand more of what’s going, they tend to reveal things fairly far into the story that will make re-reads/watches pretty interesting in my opinion. And thanks! I think I will try the anime first then for Chihayafuru 😊

this is so cool to see esp since you've only been collecting for 2 years! i've been collecting since i was 10 years old so i have a lot of these just because i got them when they came out. i had no idea some of these older series can sell for so much. i purged my collection before going to college too and set aside maybe 1/3 of it and i was going to donate them but i might reconsider and sell some of them just in case LOL

I feel like I should hide lol.. I own a lot of these series you are trying to collect (Ceres, Kamisama, Library Wars.. etc..). As for Red River I own all of it but volume 16... I would love to own Land of the Blindfolded.. I loved the volumes I read at my high school library but they never had it completed so I never got to finish it.. that was back in 2006-2010. I was collecting Library Wars as it was coming out, I have a degree in Library Science, so a lot of what is in that series is what I learned in college about censor ship and a lot more. It was fun to read it while going thru college. Love your collection just subscribed!

Started collecting recently. My ebook collection has 200+ volumes of manga and light novels, but I'm slowly starting to buy physical copies of the series I really love since I finally have the space for it. I just wish more Korean series had print volumes available in English since I've been really into manhwa recently.

Adding to this because I got curious and I checked out some series I like to see if they have physical releases. I can't believe Taamo series are digital only. I love that author and I wish I could get some of their series as physical books. At least living in Canada I can find physical books in French. Thank goodness I know the language.

The video showcased such a nice collection. I have read volumes of Afterschool Nightmare years ago but have a desire to collect it as despite its problematic content, I quite enjoyed it. My collection includes: The entirety of the Earl Cain series (which includes Godchild, the sequel series), that is my all time favorite manga and the only manga that has made me feel so so many things (such as sadness, a bit of laughter at bits and whatnot), a single volume of Angel Sanctuary, another Kaori Yuki completed work and 3 volumes of another work of hers, many Black Butler volumes (like around half of what is available in English), Are You Alice?, 2 volumes of Moriarty the Patriot (why is volume 3 sooo hard to find :(), 2 volumes of Horimiya, a few bl manga, a couple of random CLAMP volumes. Also 2 volumes of Case Study of Vanitas (need to buy more than just read them in a Barnes and Noble lol), 2 volumes of Kiss of the Rose Princess (that kind of broke me for different reasons) and a single volume of Witch Hat Atelier. (There is other stuff but my comment would be super long if I mention it all) What I want to bring in my collection: more than a single volume from a Arina Tanemura work (her art is SOOO pretty), the X manga and Gakuen Alice (got into both of those in my senior year of high school, good times).

Thank you for the tour! Your shelves have tantalised me this last month since discovering your channel. As a hint, if you want to get old stickers off the covers, you can use a drop or two of lighter fluid. It's a great trick I learned long ago when I worked at a comicbook shop.

@clampdown1134

@@ColleensMangaRecsIf you do try it, start with just a few drops. Don't pour it on. You'll know its working as the sticker goes translucent as the glue starts to weaken. After pealing it off, you may need a couple more drops on a tissue to wipe away any residue. Those Tsubasa spines will look all shiny & almost new x
@chyandinii

I don't have any lighter fluid, so what I do instead is using an old eraser to take out the adhesive while doing my best to get the sticker off. I sometimes get out my old hair dryer to make the stickers come out of the book a bit easier. Very time-consuming and I have messed up a few times, but I hope this is a helpful tip regardless.

@@chyandinii I never thought about using a hairdryer to dry out the glue. I know the Manga Sloth recommended something called Goof Off. We can't get that in the UK. It seems to work similar to lighter fluid, but has a yellow colour.

Yes volume 4 of Ceres is very hard to find I had to buy a manga lot to get it. But it was worth it cause I ended up with most of the series (volumes 1 -10). The panni also got me back into reading manga. I was actually reading through Ceres at my college library but then we switched to online learning so I had to buy the series in order to finish it. Still reading it as I'm someone who takes breaks while reading series. Now I'm fully back on my manga BS!!!

I was hoping you'd mention From Far Away or Red River but holy jeez what the hell?! They're seriously that expensive/rare? I ran the my local Waldenbooks manga section for a few years in the mid 2000's and both are some of my most favorite stories. I always kept all of From Far Away, Red River and Basara stocked... nobody ever bought them either. I'm going to need to mentally sit down and get a paper bag to breathe into. Annoyingly, Waldens didn't pay enough to really collect much at the time. Oh man, that's depressing.

OH MY GOD WALDEN'S!!!!!! I used to go there all the time until the one by my house closed down and that's when they opened a Borders instead. Funny enough I never saw Red River or From Far Away at any bookstores or my library growing up so I didn't even know about the series until getting back into shoujo. It sucks because it would've been so much easier to have read them in 08 😭
@phiredrops

 @Colleen's Manga Recs Yeah I worked in a Waldens for two years and then moved to a fullsize Borders for another five. The ordering software Waldens used was sooo archaic that it was DOS based and basically just full catalog of everything and anything in the warehouses. If it was out of print and in the warehouse? No problem, I could get it. Kotobukiya figure? Sure! I was even able to snag some Urusei Yatsura stuff just because I knew the Romanji. Borders was entirely different though. When Notable Cantabile got an anime, I wanted to order in some of the manga to go with it. Nope, couldn't order it into the Borders cause it wasn't on the approved list. Meanwhile we had huge backlogs of older series that were long past the point of every otaku in the area already owning a copy. I tried to get them to reduce the stuff that wasn't moving so there was room for more variety but that was denied too. Also our manga buyer at the time was a bit of a douche. Dude was known for being unhelpful when a female employee would request displays or stock. So when I needed something for a local comicon in Pittsburgh, I had my male manager call in and he surprisingly came up with a book display for us to use. Unfortunately, instead of sending us something cool to display the buyer sent us a display for Sokora Refugees and other OEL manga. This was especially crappy because the buyer was Kurt Hassler and his pen-name was Segamu, one of the authors of Sokora Refugees. Which was totally *not* a conflict of interest or anything. smh

I absolutely love your collection. I myself started collecting Yona of the Dawn (only 16 volumes so far but I gotta catch'em all as one does lol) and Snow White with the Red Hair (only 3 volumes for now because I just recently realised they are publishing it in my country XD). And now looking at your shelf I have realised that the volumes published here look completely different to yours. I always thought they just would copy the og covers but seems like similar to books, each country can have different edition? My Yona copies have spines in the color of her hair in the anime (maybe a bit deeper) and a little minature of the front covers, meanwhile my Shirayuki covers have white spines with a bit of fancy italic font but the covers itself are all deep red and there's framing of the characters on the front cover.

Ceres is one of my favourite manga I read when I was in high school. My library got rid of most of the volumes, which makes me sad. I saw brand new copies of the full series at Anime North this year, and part of me wishes I'd bought it even though it would have meant carrying the books around the rest of the day and I don't have shelf space for them. Mixed feelings there. I wouldn't mind rereading it one day.

Community name suggestion: ((Although this is older video I'll throw this out anyway )) Maybe name the community on your channel after a group of flowers ? Like 🌹"* Shojo Division* " A division being the highest class of plants Or a 🌹" *Bouquet/bouquets* " Seeing that a bouquet of flowers is different types coming together . 🌹 *FLORETS* may also be a good option, it's a small group of smaller flowers together 🌹Bookworms 🌹 Sojo Bookworms 🌹Petals -like individuals who make up the flower 🌹Seedlings - for newer subscribers as their love for reading blossoms Etc etc I'm choosing flower-e names as shojo mainly follows the romance categories Idk it sounded like a cute idea in my head feel free to ignore all the suggestions or consider them , it was fun brainstorming either way.
