People really just have very faulty preconceived notions about demographics. Thinking that all shojo is just sappy romance or that every seinen is just gritty action is really dumb. People surprised that Cowboy Bebop is a shojo has the same energy as people surprised that Kaguya-sama is seinen or that aot or csm is shonen.

I always roll my eyes when people try to insist that something popular or really good "can't be shoujo/josei". It's like when some cartoons that are made for kids in mind end up with a big adult fanbase because it's good and/or fun, but people still say "um isn't that for kids though???"

But don't think TT guys have been disrespectful about shoujo?? Gigguk often gets excited about new shoujo titles and some of Joey's favourite series are shoujo/josei as well
@trashmaniayato52382 ай бұрын
@@dandeliondot Its definitely meant to be tt with the trashcan literally on the table as a reference to either their sign or the box they use as a kind of randomizer every now and then. I dont think they are flat out disrespectful of shoujosei in the usual sense, but can be kind of dismissive in cases, probably not even necessary intentional. E.g. Garnt truthfully is excited, always ends up saying "what a cute little show" and then never mentions it again, when a shoujo pops up in his seasonal anime overview, which can come off as its not taken serious, boxed in or perhaps slightly belittling. When he once discussed the best romances, the few shoujo in there were naturally mostly only stuff like fruits basket, which he proceeded to claim is the best romance and didnt elaborate at all. They also once did an episode talking about 3x3s of their guests and when their friend and youtuber Emirichu's came on, full of iirc only shoujo, they basically stamped it off as very fitting for her and wholesome, but not talked about it much at all. The only time i remember Garnt putting a shoujosei in his best anime of the year was maybe banana fish. In their videos of top lists of manga/anime they never dive into the shows of these demographics either. And moments when a new shoujo is talked about in recent years they or rather Garnt didnt like it, which is unfortunate (e.g. Yamada lv999) Now, all of this sounds as bad faith on my part or insinuating they might even lie, but as mentioned i actually dont think its for reasons as them disliking the complete demographics specifically. It seems more likely that they dont think their viewers are interested or watched much of these shows to further a "discussion" paired with the facts that younger Garnt didnt watch/finish many older shoujosei and doesnt really talk much about older shows nowadays, regardless of type, focusing on new stuff. Connor doesnt care for many anime in general and isnt into romance portrayed in the medium, which is most of the more popular titles of these demographics probably reaching his ears, as well as not reading much manga. Joey for one indeed said on multiple occasions that he knows all kinds of series, even on his own channel, commenting on glass mask and similar. Though not burnt off of everything animanga, the time when he read or watched these is by now many years ago, so he doesnt remember much as he said himself and isnt into the medium as much these days. So its lower interest on their behalf combined with potentially less interest from their audience being perceived as the kind of shonen fan stereotype i assume. Not that one cant critisize them for certain aspects or express an opinion, but comments hating on them doesnt make either side look good imo. No hate to colleen obviously, im a fan of both and the skit was unexpected and fun. Rant over lol Sorry for the formating, commenting on phone is ugh

"Like a Butterfly" by Suu Morishita should be okay also. It's a modern day high school romance about a girl who is super shy. "No Matter What You Say Furi-san is Scary!" is a super wholesome modern day high school first love comedy about a girl who appears to be a delinquent and the boy she has a crush on who always misunderstands her. (actually, this might not be a shojo, but I recommend it regardless). It's been a while, but anything by Io Sakisaka should be ok. Modern day high school romances with a lot of growing up angst. If you don't mind historical romance (something along the lines of Jane Austen) "True Love Fades When the Contract Ends" is about nobles fake-dating in order to get peace and quiet. If some magic is ok, "The Fiancé Chosen by the Ring", which is a wholesome kingdom fantasy with a very heavy romance plot. Hopefully these give you some more options, good luck!

I love your shojo manga magazine deep dives and this was no exception. I will say that I wasn’t expecting to get a trip down memory lane though; even if I didn’t read all of Asuka’s manga from the 2000s the art style sure was familiar (and no doubt inspired a lot of young cartoonists who got their start at the time)! 😅 It does kindof stink that Asuka’s focus on otaku aesthetics, specifically fantasy-inspired works, are becoming less popular in recent years, but I feel like there are cycles in terms of specific genres getting popular in the shojo demographic, like the number sci-fi shojo titles of the 1980s and the magical girl boom of the 90s and early 2000s. I don’t know what the next big trend will be, but I feel there’s always going to be a place for fantasy, sci-fi, and speculative fiction in shojo.
@KuroNoKoseki2 ай бұрын
I mean isn't the villainess boom the current trend in shoujo? While I would love another fantasy boom, I feel like it's gonna be highly unlikely unless it's supernatural or more urban based to blend less with the aesthetic of the current trend. So for me personally, I'm guessing the trend will lean more to mystery, with the success of Don't Call it mystery and Tendou-ke Monogatari; crime might be another one since I don't believe shoujo has had a boom that fully focuses in that genre, but Idk I'm just throwing my guesses.

@@KuroNoKosekiThat’s true, villainess stories have been extremely popular in shojo and josei right now, as are otome inspired isekai stories, which is interesting since otome games were inspired by various isekai shojo series of the ‘90s, as Colleen discussed in a previous video. It’s fascinating to see how these trends are very cyclical and interconnected.

@Harukurochan personally aside from a few series, from experience none of the english translated villainess manga have really taken advantage of the setup in a way that's interesting, there's a lot less variety in the themes and topics focused, especially when compared the their korean counterparts. So typically, I tend to read a lot more of the otome villainess stuff in manhwa and other genres in manga. But I'm guessing this pov is heavily biased and unfair since we have more access to series compared to the ones published in English back in the day, so there is also more chance of getting slop or fodder stories

She at one point in time had all the tankobon lined up on her bookshelf waiting to complete that giant image that we'll never get. Even popped in the old comic shop right across the street from old state university where lo and behold, several old single volumes of X/1999 reminded with a slew of Tokyo Pop titles that were there when I was a student. Not like I'm still here waiting for more of Lawful Drug . . . I definitely learned about Asuka b/c I am a huge CLAMP fan, but of their smaller works like Wish and Lawful Drug. I had incorrectly assumed that RG Veda ran in it since it would have fit that vibe being such an overall dark and violent story. CLAMP, I love you but could go at least get around to tying up some of your loose ends. And the mention of Animerica Extra - hell, I remember buying individual issues of Animerica as well. With all these anime reboots of the moment, there is a small young part of me that wants a high quality remake of Weiss Kreuz for the sheer fan girl cheese factor. I know it was a complete VA driven project for the anime but with updated tech it would be pretty slick.

@@titoleon3101 real 😭 unfortunately the first time I got into anime I watched him and a few other problematic anime tubers. I was pretty young and naive but I know better than to follow people like that now 🥲

This reminds me, that I thought Witch Hat Atwlier was so good it was a shoujo, not a seinen lmao

I want more of the Gumption podcast. It should be a recurring skit, like the Nerd Crew is for Redlettermedia.

Well, considering that most of the manga or manhwa I like have female characters with significant narrative influence... 2:08 Well, considering most of Spike's actions are because he fell in love...

Men would watch this video and then decide to go watch the monogatari series for the 40th time like you didn't just do the work for them

If I had a nickel for every single thing that was said about Cowboy Bebop by people who did not understand the basics of storytelling, I would be the richest bitch in the world. But I agree that Cowboy Bebop, Code Geass, and Neon Genesis Evangelion are shoujo or at least shoujo adjacent. Also you want to tell me that Code Geass that was done by CLAMP is a shounen? Adorable.

Manga demographics make no sense to me. 2 mangas which share a very similar premise (gender-y school romances) are Stop Hibari-kun and Senpai wa Otokonoko, but Hibari is a shounen and painoko is a josei which are literally opposites despite being quite similar. Berserk took inspiration from shoujo manga for its character relationships, and the Dark Souls game director Hidetaka Miyazaki is also inspired by shoujo (see Deracine) Meanwhile stuff like Eizouken and Witch Hat Atelier are both seinen??? I am stupid

It's quite easy once you can start discerning story beats common between all the demos, what the focus is more on (action, plot, character dynamics, interior emotions), intended audience, art style and paneling, or even just marketing of the manga (who is on the covers, the colors, etc). Genres and demographics are two different things. EDIT: also relevant and I forgot to add, Senpai is an Otokonoko is a web series and more specifically a Webtoon. Those don't always have outwardly stated demos like traditional magazines and don't usually follow the same styles of art or paneling either.
