Also important to remember that not all babies have moms. Men do adopt babies or moms sometimes die in childbirth…it happens! And those kids grow up just fine with formula. Good on ya, Colleen!

Yes. There's so much privilege with the idea that bottle feeding is lazy. Having a lactating mother is one. On a smaller scale, some women just need to go back to work and can't let their babies go hungry while they're out. Maternity leave is so short if it even exists at companies in the US.

I exclusively breast fed my first baby, and exclusively formula fed my second. Formula was sooooo much harder, more work, more expensive, definitely the OPPOSITE of laziness. And now that my kids are teenagers, they are both equally healthy, happy, and loved so it really didn't make any difference long term. FED 👏 IS 👏 BEST 👏!!!!!

My daughter was exclusively formula fed. After an emergency csection, my milk never came in. I tried all the products that are supposed to help with milk supply, I tried pumping to try and get it to come in, I even tried prescription medication that should stimulate milk production. Nothing worked. Not even a drop would come out. My daughter was also in the NICU for 2 weeks, during that time a lactation specialist helped many times with trying breastfeeding. But always ended up having to give my daughter formula. It was hard because I had always heard breast is best, family and friends with kids never had a problem breastfeeding so it was very hard for me to come to terms with not being able to feed my baby myself. Took quite a while to accept it and not beat myself up every time I fed my daughter formula.

The rant hits SO close to home!! I was once told that formula feeding my daughter was lazy and that I was being selfish to not breastfeed! I have MS and had been off of most of the medications that controlled my symptoms during my pregnancy. As soon as I had her, the medical team put me back on every medication. Some people told me that I was selfish & lazy to not remain off medications so I could breast feed. Formula feeding is completely the opposite of easy or lazy. We went through 7 different formulas while awaiting her medical diagnosis. It was seriously the hardest to go through. No matter how you feed your baby, fed is ALWAYS best.

My baby girl was in & out of the NICU & PICU for the first year of her life so I always felt ashamed that I couldn't just breastfeed her. From what I remember she had to tube feed before surgery too because it was too much work for her to suck. She would sweat just sitting there and you could see her heart pounding in her chest. Alex had to put the tube in anytime it got pulled out or whatever. Sounds like you went thru it all like she did. That must've been very rough. Hope your son is doing great now.

I tried SO HARD to up my supply! Power pumping, supplements, hand expressing, and so on! I was getting literally 30 mins of sleep a day MAYBE. Finally at 7 weeks my pediatrician sat me down and told me it was okay to formula feed and that my baby needed me to be mentally healthy more than he needed breast milk. I saw a few Facebook posts over the year after that that brought me to TEARS because they were slamming people who formula feed and how lazy “those people” are. Hi Colleen! So it’s me again, Susan the NICU nurse, that offered to come help you back a few weeks ago. I know you get tons of comments and it’s probably impossible to read each one, but I was hoping to hear back from you one way or another. I was truly serious about my offer to help. Are you guys doing ok now, and really don’t need anyone, or are you still thinking about getting some type of help? It seems like things are a lot better now, I truly hope so! The babies are growing amazingly to me and I know that must be making you so happy! A good way to do bottles is to prepare them all each day and just use a bottle warmer each time you fed them. It shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes. You need a good stash but it’s so much easier to do it just once a day. Prepare the milk in a big pitcher and divide it up amongst the bottles. Just rinse them after each feeding and then once a day clean all the bottles thoroughly. Of course if you don’t have enough breast milk, either yours or from your relative, that’s enough to fill them all for 24 hrs, then you can’t. When you’re doing it from one pumping to the next I understand you can’t do it that way. I agree with you, breast feeding alone is the easiest, once you’re established! Bottles are a lot of work! Especially the Dr. Browns! You’re doing AMAZING! GO MAMA‼️ With much love. ❤️

I breastfed my kids and I would always say that I breastfeed them because I'm lazy lol Which is true! It is hard at the beginning with sore nipples and regulating everything. I definitely feel that every form of feeding your baby come with their own struggles. My daughter REFUSED to breast feed. I tried to exclusively pump and it was so hard on me, especially when 4 months in my supply dried up. So I tried formula. It worked best for me but my struggle was that it was expensive and my daughter could only properly digest a specific brand and type 😔 but it kept her fed and that's all that mattered to me. So yes, fed IS best and mothers aren't lazy because they choose to formula feed.

Hey colleen; I wanted to add something to the ‘taking meds for mental health’ subject; the biggest help ive found in taking my meds daily is my husband. He has an alarm set for me, and he reminds me everyday. he by no way forces me to take it, but if im not feeling it we talk about it and why. Its kept me accountable, and its helped me take meds on days I probably would have skipped

At my midwifery clinic they even avoided ‘fed is best’ and said ‘supported is best’ instead because no method of feeding is easy and fed is best implies “just do whatever is easiest” and no women should be made to feel like there is an easy way. All methods of feeding need support and my midwives were adamant that they would offer all the support they could in how I fed my baby.

Thank you for putting this out there!! I also never warmed my baby’s bottles, so much easier if they’ll take room temperature I totally recommend it if you do end up doing just formula!
@Topaz_Estrella

Yes!! Our son never required warmed milk or formula so we literally just measure the water, scoop in the formula, add the bottle top and shake it while we run over to the crying baby. My husband also refused to use Dr. Brown's because of how many pieces there are. When our son had "colic," it was really just bad gas from cow's milk based formula with the casein. We changed the formula and the special colic tube wasn't necessary anymore. There is a small airhole in the bottle nipple to release air/pressure but it doesn't require taking like 6 pieces apart.

I was a breastfeeding mom WAAAAY back. I thought it was easier too. When my daughter had her first son I discovered a circumstance when it’s not. She had to use a nipple shield to get him to latch. She tried and tried. She was told her nipples were a bit inverted. She went for a few months and finally resorted to formula. Here she is over nine years later with her second son and she tried again. She used the shield for four/five months and one day he latched without it. Her tenacity paid off! Of course now he is teething and likes using her as a chew toy…lol

@Keryn M I'm sorry you're dealing with that right now. It's hard when your body won't do what you want and expect it to. Mother in laws can be especially trying. Let me just tell you. Whatever you do for your baby is right and they'll be ok. This won't be the last opinion or difficult time your mother in law gives you. Be strong and true to yourself and have confidence in what choices you make and what you say to her or anyone for that matter. She's not you and this isn't her baby. She had the time to choose how to raise her kids. Just like her mom. Now it's your turn and you have just as much right to choose (in this case maybe not a choice but you know what I mean) how to raise your kids the way you see fit. Parents struggle to remember that. They overstep the line of passing on their wisdom and guidance and tred into intrusiveness. You might have to let her know that....gently and respectfully lol she might not realize.

For me formula saved me, I couldn't produce milk for my baby. So formula made her full and happy and that's what worked for me. My hospital was horrible and forced me into trying breast feeding and made me feel like a terrible mother for not being able to. I even told them hey if this isn't working let's try something that will. My grandma told me hey if they wouldn't of invented formula my dad and aunt would of starved. Do what works for you and your baby!

Colleen! I’m totally on your side! It’s like a muscle memory to automatically do whatever routine you’re used to. If it’s a “weird you” thing then it’s a weird us thing!

I get confused with toilet paper sides too as well as trash cans and at work the flushers are automatic but not all on the same sides 🤦🏻‍♀️

Tortilla talk question: hey Colleen! I have been watching you since you were pregnant with Flynn and have been obsessed with you ever sense! Do you have any update on finding a nanny? If you, would you have a problem with the nanny being a fan of yours? Would you prefer they not know who you are or would you rather they are? Love you!

Colleen, you are totally normal with your doorknob/toilet situation. This happens to me in my car. I have a start button on my steering wheel and my husbands is behind it. I always go to start the car on the steering wheel and when it’s not there, my thumb goes through the steering wheel 😂
