If anyone wants more advice, here is my spiel: College is a place to explore. One of my early professors told us basically we are paying for help to figure out who we are. That said, I don’t think anyone should expect to know who they are or what they wanna be after school. That could even be considered a bad mentality. I think it better to look at passion and identity as something dynamic and more fluid. Really think about why you are doing what you’re doing. Don’t give yourself anxiety over it, to your best ability that is, but take classes because you are interested in what that class has to offer. Not every class is going to be amazing, but do your best to take ones that are good for you. Personally I don’t recommend majoring in something just for the money, but some may choose otherwise, power to you. But don’t be afraid to do something else. I have switched majors more times than I can count on a hand and I’m still pushing through. It’s okay to come out the other end and be like “what the fuck was I doing?” All you can really say is you took your best guess. Also, find the things that you value and give yourself time for that. When I say give yourself time, I mean schedule it out if you have to. Lastly, it is incredibly common to become jaded with college or classes (at least from my personal and peers’ experiences). Again, I encourage taking risks and changing it up if you feel that way. At some point you will have to commit to something, but that’s only until you finish school. Then, you’ve got a degree and can keep on trying to find out what the hell it is you want out of life. There’s always time for change and college is just one stepping stone on the path through life. It’s cliche, but true. Embrace your own experience, try your best to be present, make friends, and keep making more friends. Good luck.

@@forsaken7161 not sure how I could help exactly. Organization usually seems to be a common factor in getting better grades. Provides more time to work effectively/ go to professors if you need help. Taking classes that are more enjoyable might help too, but that can be difficult. Professors generally seem to want to help as well, but that can vary significantly by school, class, etc. Starting off terms strong may be of help as well, but motivation/discipline to do so can be hard.

@@alexj7440 If you're frosh, the best advice I could give is to find likeminded people that share your habits (trust me, they exist!). Really needed to hear tip 4 or 6. Next semester is my last in university, and I've made zero friendships that survived outside of the classroom. I've managed to get good grades, but probably at the expense of a million things I would've liked to try out -- not to mention the amount of stress and the toll on my mental health. Despite being only one more semester, I've been dreading having to go another six months of my life like this, but your words helped me see the light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you, love your videos. You should do more like this every once in a while.

Videos like this are always such a profoundly direct interaction between two aspects of my life. I'm in my second year if Uni, and whilst your videos often relate to topics I study, they as a while exist as a separate, more whole part of my person I in turn try to reflect in school. Seeing the the reverse, the latter talk about the former, can be surreal

The non-group group work is totally a thing. After almost burning out on a summer class because I wanted to get max score and was the only one putting work into the group project, I was so relieved when the current teacher asked if we wanted to do her class project as a group or individual... And she listened to my suggestion to structure the work solo. I grew to dread group projects 😂

This helped me so much, thank you for posting! I needed to hear some of this. I just started college after a gap year and it’s been such a mixed bag experience. Some days I feel like I’m sitting in my lectures for philosophy and anthropology (which, thank you btw. I feel like this channel helped me realize I wanted to work in those areas) and everything makes sense. Like, I really feel like I’m growing and understanding the world through these really interesting new perspectives. Other days I’m beyond frustrated dealing with the day-to-day struggles of college life. I don’t know what about this made me feel better but it helped so much. it’s just nice hearing it’s a mixed bag experience for most people. Anyways, I clearly ramble and am not one for grammar either lmao. But I really appreciate the post. Made me feel so much less weird abt everything going on in my life.

Mr. Phus 55, thank you. Uni's been rough on me and on this side of the world where schools haven't opened up. Lost a scholarship grant and am on the verge of losing another. Lost whatever identity I've had of being 'that smart kid.' Uni's got me studying more than I ever have and it's opened me up to the idea that I don't really know who I am or what I want (much like your videos have). Thanks again. Much love.

I had a huge relationship with alcohol, cocaine, and Xanax which I would do alone in my bare studio apartment. I barely went to class or did work while studying architecture. I ended up leaving my last semester during the COVID lockdown and they still awarded with my degree. I've been clean for about four months. Bless the education system. P.S. Had to take 2 medical leaves and wrote mostly about theory.
@daoyang223

College happens that way. Had a professor who taught music theory and he was old and seemed extremely underqualified for the job. He wasn't good at explaining music and was disconnected with the students which was a big turn off for my brain. Anyways he's old so he had health complications. He had a mini heart attack at home and took a leave from work and gave everyone an A (this happened in the first 3 weeks too). Also had a Philosophy teacher who "taught" us some religion about peace like buddhism and sometimes brought up politics like it was a poli sci class. Anyways throughout the semester she openly encouraged us to come up with ways to interpret whatever the hell we want when we give her answers and then when mid terms and finals came, she told us to walk the track and think about our life. Everyone got an A in that class, it was way too easy. So easy I wish I hadn't spent money on it as I don't think I actually learned anything from it, I may as well have just watched a youtube video.

I definitely agree with balancing work and school, my freshman year I did so horribly I lost a critical scholarship but I also did bad socially, I was able to turn it around and get a full scholarship but I basically forsook any potential new relationships with people at the other 2 schools I went to after my first because I was so focused on getting the education. So I would definitely say take some time to get to know people and be social a lot of my trouble came from not doing that.

I know it'll probably end up a really memorable experience that I would otherwise never get & I just have to make the most out of it but my god I also got into university options outside of my dad's home country, but I'd feel guilty if I didn't go lol (mcgill being one of them woo). I just finished my first year at McGill and I think what helped me the most was that "work hard play hard" is in fact very real and it doesn't matter how studious you think you are, you still need to play hard -- and it doesn't make you a bad or lazy student for taking time to have fun. Don't just work hard to play hard, but play hard so you can work hard. The workload is so much more intense than high school and it is impossible to manage it if on top of the work itself, you're super miserable. I can't stress how important the balance is.

One thing I absolutely can not stress enough is the value of living on your own, whether that is in a dorm or an apartment off campus. My freshman year I lived with a friend and really discovered a lot of who I am as a person outside of my comfort zone, which helped in overcoming some of my mental health issues in the years following. Living away from campus (and especially with my parents) has made it tough to make relationships in college. I really wish I chose to live in a dorm 4 years ago, but I was too worried and riddled with anxiety to do so. If you feel anxious or too socially awkward to live on your own and are tempted to commute, please take my advise and take the leap of faith. I promise you won't regret it.

It's a small part of hopefully a super long life and don't forget you can always go back and get a different degree, where you go especially for undergrad doesn't really matter because it's all the same degree is it central equivalent to a high school diploma now, and once you get out learning doesn't stop. You're always learning and because you live in the age of the internet where the world is at your fingertips you can really learn whatever you want. Take risks and go for whatever you want to go for a while you can. And it's okay if you don't know what you want to do because who really does at 18 or 22 And from personal experience, this is my final year in college. It's okay if you take longer than 4 years. Most people actually Take 5 years I'm pretty sure it's over 60 percent. at least in the United States. Practice safe sex and speak up if something happened to you. And please don't let your mental health deteriorate because that could be detrimental to your entire experience at College, your progress and your life in general. Whether it be the doctor or that be the mental health counseling

Now in college I feel like absolute shit, no desire to work, don't give a damn about the reqs, stuck at home for god knows how long now. The only positives I guess is that at least I live with my family and still have the same friend group around me since high school (since no one could meet anyone knew anyways lol) I just hope 2nd year comes around already and I step foot in the campus again. First time seeing a previous familiarized voice in person is always strange to me, but damn, turns out my favorite philosophy mumble boy is almost handsome enough to make me gay. I always pictured him as a dark brooding swarthy looking guy.

I can vouch for the social loafing that happens in assignment groups. I experienced a particular situation where one guy appointed himself as the group 'facilitator' (but this was really just a veil for being the self-appointed leader) and gave all of us specific tasks to do for a presesntation. I requested that we all catch up at the library at least one day per week. However he preferred that we all just do everything online via Google drive, which the group complied with. No one contacted me properly or helped me during the three weeks despite my efforts to communicate. Anyways, for the assignment, my task was to evaluate the literature on the possible aetiology of the disease we chose (neural tube defects). But! On the day of the presentation (literally one hour before the class) the 'facilitator' organised everyone to catch up and quickly go over our material together. I voiced how this is sooooo unproductive and pointless, but it seems that voicing dissent within a group dynamic is not very well received for the most part. In other words, a lot of people just want to go along with the group mentality and flow, which is not always good. In fact, this leaves room for assholes to take over... this 'facilitator' guy had a massive ego, or superiority complex, if you will. We hardly discussed the presentation in detail because (1) it was rushed, and (2) he flirted with the girls and started bragging about how he doesn't do ANY readings but can still score high distinction's just by watching lectures (at 1.5x speed apparently) alone. Nonetheless, he turns around halfway through our meeting and mentions how he is discussing the aetiology of the disease. I was like WTF that was my given task and I worked my ass off on it! According to him it wasn't, and only one other group member stuck up for me. As a result, I was given the short straw and had to discuss one specific aetiological factor and had to try and spread it out and discuss it for over 6 minutes (I initially had a presentation on 4 factors and how they might interact, along with my interpretation of the greatest risk factor). Fair to say, I hardly had enough research material to discuss one facet in the length of detail required. Although I managed to fluff through the presentation (which ended up being 2 minutes haha), I pretty much died on that stage. The point of this story is that some people will shit on you but others will help. I was pessimistic about the situation, however the girl who stuck up for me said I should speak to the tutor about what happened, so I did. I showed him all of the work I had prepared and explained to him how there was a misunderstanding in the group outside of my control that stuffed up my presentention (I must admit though, I was VERY tempted to throw the 'facilitator' under the bus, but I didn't in fear of undesirable backlash). The tutor considered my point and gave me a high distinction. If it wasn't for that girl telling me to do so, I probably would have said nothing and failed (or got a bad mark). So my advice to anyone out there who may come across the same thing is: speak up! Even if your natural inclination is like mine to just take the bitter attitdue and not say anything. My attiitude was thus because I saw my inability to handle myslf in the group dynamic as a failing of my own abilities, hence I believed I deserved to get shat on. I guess this highlighted how I may have had a certain pre-conceived self-ideal (pride perhaps?) that was also getting in my own way. It was a lesson learned, and these days, although winning my point is still rare, I speak up a LOT more and look for those who actually listen (hint: they are usually, but not always, the quiet ones). I have learnt that as long as I have the solid work behind myself to support my stance, there will generally be someone who will listen (even if the group disagrees, steals your work, and makes you look like a fool). Sorry for the tangent, but if you read up to this point, then I'm guessing this story was at least interesting or helpful enough :)

Does it include anything about how to tackle with sucidal thoughts I've been having for the past few months due to being a fucking disappointment and worthless guy for my parents and loved ones who invested a lot into a degree which I have no interest in but I want to make my mom proud which sadly I've never been able to(actually I've never made anyone proud). I don't want to continue this pathetic existence anymore just consuming my parent and grandparents hard earned money. Edit- Wow there are many amazing people trying to help in the comments, I love you all so much, you're all great people. I've drowned myself in self hatred(and for very good reasons, I deserve it) in these past few months. I can't explain my family situation here but it's very very hard and thanks for trying to help.

Try to go out and find things you enjoy. Live for yourself and don’t let your peers put you down whenever you try to finally come up. Try to help people anytime you get the opportunity, and balance that with your own passions. Find the person you want to become and practice being that person around people who you’re comfortable with. Channel your feelings into something like writing or music; use those things to find more goals and thus opportunities. That pain is temporary at the end of the day because life doesn’t stop for anyone. You need to find happiness in much smaller things so that way you get to feel joy more often. I’m sure you already do, but self reflect, and come to positive conclusions.

I'm sorry you're feeling this way. I wish I had a better, more convincing way of saying it- but, here's the most straightforward advise I can give- Reach out. Let others know what's going on. Tell them what you're dealing with and know that, at the end of the day, your family will value your life infinitely more than your success. Please don't stay silent about this. I remember reading somewhere that we're a mosaic of all the people we've known and loved, and I'd say the reverse holds true just as well. Your life is part of many other peoples lives, it has a place in their mosaics. To destroy it is to damage theirs's as well. Your existence makes a difference. Here I am writing all of this, because it has made a difference to me

@@weezypeezy1725 Oh it was actually cheaper for me in the end cus netherlands has a lot of support for students from other countries especially in covid. I'm at a pretty rural university in America that's really good academically, but I do feel like I'm in a bubble because freshmen aren't allowed to have their cars here and the town is really small. I've been feeling really lonely lately because I haven't really found my group yet. I'm the president of the German club already and I'm involved in the orchestra, but I just don't have any real connections. My two regrets in college. Not socializing enough, in engineering you focus a lot on your studies because you need to work a lot. Also that I didn't help out as much as I could have. I feel like I should have done more. College is mostly about connections, you're paying to meet people in your field. I'm glad I didn't have to work through college most college jobs are useless anyways. They don't help society in any way. I feel like i should volunteer more.
