A fun fact about Evansville (I only know this because I was there and I follow the team closely): Just about 2 weeks before UE played Kentucky, they played a pre-season exhibition game against a Division 2 school named USI. USI went to the Final Four in the last March Madness Tournament for D-II. This game was surprisingly very close and was tied with about 10 seconds left. With no time left an Evansville player named Artur Labinowicz shot a half courter and missed, but was fouled and got 3 free throws. At this point I was thinking this is academic, and there is no way they blow this now. He misses the first. I'm not too worried. He misses the second. I start to think "Is this really about to happen." Sure enough, he misses the third free throw and the game goes into overtime. We had some of the best seats in the house (we had our own chairs with wheels on them, and we had monitors that we could watch the arena feed, and some cable channels), and we were losing our minds. Luckily, we did end up avoiding embarrassment at the hands of a D-II school and won in OT. So if you ever think about this season and Evansville beating Kentucky, just know that Evansville nearly lost to a D-II school just about 2 weeks prior to this.

No it wasn't. College basketball seasons have around 3x as many games as college football seasons -- and as such, 3x more opportunities for upsets. 2007 college football saw the number 1 AND 2 teams lose in the same weekend 3 times, which is absurd. I think 2 or 3 of the top 10 upsets of all time (going off of vegas lines) happened -- the two off of the top of my head were perrenial natty contenders USC losing to a 1-win Stanford at home, and powerhouse Michigan losing to fucking App State (we all know about that one). Those two upsets, *by themselves* outdo both of the top college basketball upsets from last year -- SF Austin over Duke and Evansville over Kentucky. To be clear, those were both monumental upsets, even with Duke and Kentucky being in the midst of down seasons, but those by themselves can't touch 2007 college football -- not by a landslide. There were some other cool upsets on this list, like the Baylor loss. But, I'll take the season in which missouri and fucking KANSAS played a de facto playoff game (think about a scenario in which Northwestern played Virginia Tech in the final 4 in basketball -- that's how wacky that is), and a season which saw South Florida, Boston College, California, rise to #2, and ended with a 2 loss team winning the championship in the midst of an era where it was rare for 1 loss teams to win it, let alone 2-loss teams. (Case in point, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there has been a 2 loss CFP team since it's introduction in 2014).

College basketball is amazing, the amount of upsets is amazing and in some ways better than the NBA, March Madness is literally Madness, and all of the Game Winners and crazy games make it so interesting. I don’t usually watch it but it is really cool how all of these “no name” schools are upsetting all of the really good teams like Duke and Maryland. Good video.

The big ten were almost all evenly matched obviously some teams were better, but what really mattered more was the home-court advantage. Like Rutgers never lost at home, and Maryland only lost at home once. So a lot of the upsets relied on the homecourt advantage.
