Good thing it wasn't 4th Down. Illegal Kicking also carries a loss-of-down with it, IF it had been 4th Down the defense could have taken the penalty. The result would have been a markoff half the distance to the goal, and a loss of down, turning the ball over at that spot.

Ed was one of the best to do it. His explanations were always clear and he always made sure anyone watching from anywhere knew what the foul was being called for

If the ball is in the field of play, then it absolutely is a penalty (such as against the Exskins vs. Giants illegal kicking here). Honestly though, committing an intentional and obvious penalty to prevent the opponent from a touchdown should result in the touchdown (e.g., punching the ball out of the endzone on a botched snap/handoff to keep the defense from recovering).

in college football there was a penalty once on BYU when they were at the 5 yd line and the QB turned around and walked back like he was confused and they snapped the ball to the FB who ran for a TD and the officials called a penalty on the Offence for attempting to deceive the defense. I mean if you're going to make up a non existing penalty, at least make it sound legit like illegal procedure or something. The QB was just a man in motion.

key words “previous spot” and “repeat the down”…it actually lost them 10 yards and they have to replay the down instead of three yards net loss and having a fresh set of downs since it was a first down reception. basically 2nd and 17 vs. 1st and 10

So, instead of taking the crack back block to be enforced from the end of the play (which would still give them the first down), they take the holding which would cause the play to not count and it would still be second down and enforced from the previous spot. Offsides: on the wrong side of the line of scrimmage at the time of the snap Encroachment: touching an opponent before the snap Neutral zone infraction: defender lined up in the box within 1 yard of the ball Unabated to the quarterback: defensive offsides with a clear path to the QB They kinda could just call all of those offsides, but since encroachment and unabated to the QB blow the play dead, you need that distinction.

@@Kylora2112 Neutral zone infraction is a defender entering the neutral zone in a sudden way that causes a response by the opposing offensive lineman (that would otherwise be a false start). It also blows the play dead. Just lining up in the neutral zone is offsides.

I believe in college, if a defensive player or players calls out signals with the intent of causing a false start by the offense, the penalty is called "Disconcerting Signals" and it's equivalent to a delay of game. I've seen this one called a few times but yes, it is rare.

The back to back 'invalid for catch signal' had different yardage penalties. The second one was 5 yards, the first one was half the distance to the goal and placed on the 10, which means it was probably going to be a 15 yard penalty

Manning even berated Ramirez and so did the announcers who stated Ramirez made "a poor decision" as if it were his fault. Manning was flagged for illegal motion and wasn't where he was supposed to be. Ramirez is a fantastic football player and it wasn't fair that he was blamed for the result of Manning's illegal motion penalty. Manny WE STILL LOVE YOU! RAMIREZ FOR PRESIDENT!

Didn't watch it all, but I bet the "leaping" penalty against the Dolphins on a MNF game wasn't called! And cost them the game after a blocked field goal against Indy (?) on a field goal try. First time any of us knew you weren't allowed to actually jump up and raise your arm to block a field goal try. Unreal!
