Technically, 1 is the correct answer if this were an entrance exam back in 1869 (which it is obviously not lol). An academic paper back in 1917 discussed this ambiguity. Since mathematical typesetting was limited back then, they used the ÷ symbol to denote a fraction which was hard to read -- again, given the limited mathematical typesetting. So the problem would then be read as 8 all over the quantity of 2(2+2) or 8÷(2(2+2)). Scientific calculators also use this in their coding so you would get 1 if you input this in the calculator. I personally would answer 1 as an engineering student who uses a scientific calculator daily lol but Google says the modern interpretation would give 16 as the answer.

That’s wrong though, the answer is 1. You would do what’s in the parentheses first, so (2+2) = 4. HOWEVER, now the 4 lives inside the parentheses. So it’s 8 / 2(4), once again parentheses takes precedent, so you would factor in or multiply the “2,” thus 2(4) = 8. You’re left with 8/ 8 = 1. I’m sorry, but I will die on this hill.

For the first one both answers are right since it's ambiguously written down. The division sign should not be used like this. In a proper equation it's clear what is above and what is below the division line. With this division symbol it is not thus it's not used in equations. edit: these were definitely not harvard entry questions
