Hello Mr checkmark not sure who you are. But I'm an engineer in my 30s. Fuck college. I went to UCF, and I thought everything was fine until I started on my Master's Degree and became a "teaching assistant". I quickly discovered that cheating was rampant and ignored. American born white people in their junior year of college couldn't write in complete sentences. I quit my Master's program and got a job.

Amazing work, proud to be a Patron. Wasn't my experience in college at all, was a history major, graduated and went to law school, graduated that and passed the Bar. So I did a lot of SCHOOL, I enjoyed it and definitely enjoyed the classes in my major. I understand that GE requirements mostly don't make sense, but I like the way my undergrad did it. You had 8 different themes for GE and you could take any classes in the theme to finish your GE. I took the "Ancients and Moderns" theme which meant I did Ancient Astronomy, Pre-Socratic Philosophy, and all sorts of classes that while in different majors were related to things I already knew from my major. I think that's a much better approach than making the Math majors take Elizabethan Poetry.

I knew decades ago college was a scam. How? Because my grandparents, who paid about $10-$15k for their full college period, ended up buying their own house, buying & running a small business, and both had a job for their whole lives that paid enough for them to live a LOT better than my parents, and vastly better than my generation of the family has, most of whom paid $80k+ and barely finished the minimum requirements to be told they have a slightly better chance at a job that's not fast food or similar starter jobs. But every single one of my cousins & siblings & some aunts & uncles, all still started at those jobs! My sister went into debt for student loans, then ended up paying on it until she could write it off in a bankruptcy claim, then she got married to a millionaire who was born into wealth & hasn't had to work since... Good old wealth inequality, even in families, we have the rich & the poor & the even poorer...

I both love and hate how accurate this video is. It seems like colleges and universities make something that should be as simple as signing up for classes or finding out what classes you need way too overly complicated. Okay, so I need to take a math class but I'm a bit out of practice, so let's sign up for this easier math class instead. Oh, I can't sign up for this easier math class? That's right, because the only way for me to take this class is if I sign up for a different section that also has a separate support class for the main class, and that support class has its own additional fee! And if you want to access the external service that's required to complete any of the assignments, that's yet ANOTHER fee! Take the endless headaches from that and repeat it a minimum of four times per semester and you have the college experience in a nutshell.

As a college student that is almost done with five years, I can totally agree with all of the BS classes that i had to take to be able to get my degree. Why does an Enviromental Studies major have to take a biology class when I really dont want to be a biologist/ in the biology field. The amount of classes that I had to take just to pass was awful. I also was told by my math teacher that "she doesn't teach outside of the classroom" . Well guess who passed her class with a D and got her fired. (One of the achievements that I am proud about.) Luck I have been subbed since the Austin shout out and every video is an about banger. You need WAY more attention. Also dont push yourself, most videos that do the best are the ones that you don't even think about after the upload button. Cheers!!! ( I know you hate that)

I'm not American. But even here in the Netherlands, the drag of the school system is exactly the same. Wasted so many years in school learning all the crap in the world. Like, basic knowledge in e.g. biology and physics, fine, but I definitely have no interest in being able to mathematically explain why the corner of a triangle is 45% or why the lens in my eye bends light at a 12% degree due to the curvature. My final study, which I was able to pick myself, took 2 years, mainly practical work (in difference to the 6 years of theory beforehand) was such a breath of fresh air, and even still it was a drag because it was a study in computer science. Everything I learned beforehand had absolutely NO value to that study. And then I still learned things that I did not care about. I only needed a little guidance and by the end of first year I was a better programmer than my TEACHER. Now I'm employed as a web developer, and the only reason I was hired was because of the countless hours of coding work I did OUTSIDE of school. In my free time. Because I was motivated and enjoyed coding. Fuck school, honestly.

I always wanted to be a doctor when I grew up. I studied hard graduated from high school with a decent GPA. I told myself I wanted to go to community college first because Ikne with how comfortable I was with my GPA that I wasn’t prepared for Uni. I just wasn’t ready and felt that was my most mature decision ever. I wanted to take it nice a slow and build myself up. Then go to University to finish off my remaining classes. Tie it all up with med school in Japan(yes I was THAT serious about my education) then work towards working until I’m able to officially be a member of society and open my own clinic. Unfortunately, being a people pleaser at the time, my folks told me about Uni giving me a scholarship. Now you’d think my folks would say screw that and help me with community college…I graduated 10 years later and now I’m a teacher.(and not even a teacher in Japan) ain’t life great.

I need your timing to stop being too perfect, lol. I'm returning back to school to get a degree that will hopefully compliment the work experience I've been doing for the last decade or more (after starting and stopping college for over a decade). It took the pandemic for me to start seeing some real positive change with my job market and I'm now making more than I have ever before, but it's not enough (that sounds greedy, but I dont think wanting to make more than $43K, before taxes, is greed). My current job does give annual raises, but a $1 an hour raise is a trickle and inflation is nipping at the heels. I think I've about maxed out as far as my high school diploma will take me. I'm happy I worked first before jumping in with expensive loans (I mostly paid for my prior college attempts with pell grants, but now I'm seen as making too much because I'm single with no kids 😒) and the college I'm attending this fall is only about $5K a semester. So, a little over $40-$45K in loans once I finish isn't terrific, but isn't an impossible amount to overcome. With ten years to pay it off, it will be cheaper than even my car note payments right now. But the uselessness of classes does scare me and I'm going to hope I don't have...too many 😅. During my stint at a semester for Office Admin (I'll be going to school now for Business Admin), part of the syllabus was indeed internship, but my work at my call center job counted as credit 😂. That wasn't the entire class, I just think it was an end of the semester or end of the course project and I got credit for it ahead of time. I now work at an office, so I actually hope if I get another class like that, once again, my work experience will just give me an easy grade. If someone knows of a source though that offers certificates related to Business Admin and would actually hold weight with employment, please let me know. For example, like how Google offers cheap cources with certificates for things related to the tech field. It's not a degree, but they're a good way for someone to get their foot in the door with obtaining a tech job, given that the courses are about $400+ each.
@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley Жыл бұрын
And just three months later, I've dropped the ONE class I was taking, lol. It was going to be three courses, but I wasn't sure if the other two were online or on campus and getting confirmation over the phone became impossible. I couldn't contact the instructors, so I finally had to just go up to the school and speak with Admissions who informed that yes, they were in-person. I had already missed two classes by then, so they dropped me. Fine, whatever. My remaining class was Pre-Calculus Algebra and I'm horrendous with math. We started off with doing three lessons in one week (oh, I never knew I had it in me to do such all-nighters...my immune system did not like that). Then, we had three lessons for two weeks. That lasted a month, and here at the time I finally decided to withdraw, it was about to kick up to six lessons in two weeks, plus a chapter quiz. It was an online "go at your own pace" sort of course with no real teaching aside from the lecture video made by the instructor, which was fine with me. Each lesson was divided into three parts, the lesson given in the text book, then 15 practice quesrions, then 15 Certify/review questions, and this was the only part that mattered and was graded for the lesson. The textbook for me was usually useless, so I'd go through the Practice, copy down the problems and fail them intentionally, get the step-by-step assistance that was offered, then do the Certify. This worked until life began to kick my ass. One of my coworkers went on maternity leave and everyone picked up her jobs and this, combined with stuff at work picking up in general and it being a very busy season, caused me to not get off work until an hour to an hour or nearly two hours later. I was too exhausted to really focus on schoolwork afterwards. I work mostly from home, but I do have to go into the office some days. We print license cards off for one of the state agencies we assist and this past Thursday, whereas in the off-season we might have 10-20, I had 74 to do...all by myself. It's very easy work, but time-consuming. I left the office at 7:30PM that day when my shift emds at 5, and still worked another two hours at home. As I'm an hourly employee, I am compensated for all of that time. It was a 50+ hour week for me, the first time ever. And then the last issue is that I'm about to move in two weeks. I've had very little time to pack what with school and work pretty much monopolizing everything. So, these issues, combined with the increased work load, has just made me realize I seriously cannot juggle all of this right now. Oh. And I just found out that my student loans won't be given to me unless I take one more class and as my essay just highlighted, I literally cannot fit another course into my life right now. So, I'd either have to pay $2K out of pocket for one class, money I do not have, or I just go ahead and drop the clas and pay 40%. It's still not great, but it's better, with all things considered. So yeah, thus concludes my school semester and it's only mid September. Funsies.
