I remember when I first started working in New York City. I missed the word “ambulance” in a conversation with a coworker (and it was during lunch), and people around me immediately started treating me like I was incompetent, and it was very hard to recover.

The real struggle is when they use one word per sentence and you’re expected to figure out everything based on social cues for a weird situation anyone rarely runs into, kanji that is never used except for this one particular situation, Japanese history nobody knows outside of Japan, that region’s culture nobody talks about, and some 4 character proverb that was taught once in grade school and nobody ever talks about but somehow everyone knows.
That's when you say "Ah.. hmm..." 「ごめんじゃあね」 And back away slowly

As a Chinese, when I speak Japanese in Japan, people always do this. But when I speak English, they will speak slower.😂😂😂

そうですね。🥲 I know this feeling. When I visited Japan in 2016, a kind older lady helped me get back to the hotel by bus. I couldn't understand her very well but she also had a mask on, so it was difficult to hear her. I just kept thanking her over and over. I didn't know what else to say 😅

It happens to me when I study and talk in English. Everyone has the same feeling when they try to learn new languages

There is always something you can't learn from books or by talking to (or watching on here) Japanese self-described "experts"(like MattvsJapan lol).
