The song is a description of people with an addiction.. 1) for murder, then does it again: 2) dating a girl that you know you can't stand, but then you go and find another one, do it again. 3) A gambler in vegas, thinks he has the 'black cards' to play, then in the end you have to lay your cards down, but he loses all the time, but he goes back, and does it again. The idea, people get addicted to things, and they can't stop they DO IT AGAIN.. so.. "you go back, Jack, and do it again" means JACK is just "any addictive person" out there..

First verse: a bad dude hunts down another dude for stealing his ‘water’ (The Dan often uses euphemisms, or words or actions that stand in for other words or actions - in this case, water=drugs) 2nd verse: a dude is caught in a toxic relationship with a cheatin’ chick. He takes her back again and continues to get abused. Verse 3: A guy swears to everyone he doesn’t gamble anymore, but there he is in Vegas wondering if he could get away with cheating at cards. If I could, I’d make Steely Dan a mandatory class in high school. Everyone would be better. Oh yeah, I’d add government and ethics courses, too.

Steely Dan is a treat. I envy your hearing them for the first time. Repeat listenings to their work will give you years of enjoyment. You hear something new in the lyrics and music each time. The lyrics can seem cryptic and easy to apply to yourself...And then you realize what the song is really about and go to the next level of appreciation. They were masters of songwriting and production. Just wait until you hear Royal Scam, Katy Lied and Aja.

I didn't have any idea of what the specifics of it were about when I was in grade school, but it was on the radio all the time, and it's completely interwoven into my existence. Of course I later bought the album and the other albums that were steadily coming out as I was growing up through high school. Steely Dan is such an important and significant band. It's an incredible rabbit hole to go down.

I gotta admit, i really like to see how into this music you get. I can tell you loved the solos, especially. Outside of the Beatles, Steely Dan is one of my favorite bands. This song combines elements of blues, rock, jazz, soul, and bossa nova into such a memorable track that really works when combined. Their musicianship, and their in-studio wizardry also created some of the best sonics in music from the 1970's and 80's. They sound like they were recorded yesterday.

A friend and bandmate from college made his own electric sitar. This was in 1981. He bought a cheap electric guitar, then shaped a piece of very hard wood (might have been ebony), sanded it smooth, then attached it to the body under the strings near the bridge so that they buzzed against the wood when you played it. Very cool. He went on to become a fairly well-known multi-instrumentalist in Nashville.

Great way to start a debut album, and to start a career. This was the first song they released and it was a massive hit. At this time they were and actual band. The song is about compulsive behavior, people repeating actions that aren't good for them. Jack may just be a generic thing to call a guy, like "dude", and the guy in each verse might not be the same guy as in the other verses. It may be about 3 different guys with 3 different obsessions. Since you're starting at the beginning with Steely Dan, you might want to hear "Rikki, Don't Lose That Number" before you listen to Aja, because that came before Aja. Another option is to listen to the entire album that "Rikki" is from, Pretzel Logic, because it's an excellent album. If you do that, then maybe you'd do Aja first, since that seems the album that lots of people want to hear you do, and then come back to Pretzel Logic.

As Julie Andrews instructed "Let's start at the very beginning". Very Astute of you to go back to Side A, track 1. I can see you dig this one; it's about addictions, circling back to do it again. a)Most catchy (economical) chorus in history - I defy anyone to come up with anything better/shorter. b)Despite it being inarguably brilliant, they won't revisit it, plunder, or mine it; they'll just find another avenue with different instruments/hooks/intriguing lyrics to keep the listener engaged and on their toes/ears. Aja was their best seller (It's very good). So is this LP, so are all the others. The Royal Scam is a personal favourite, but honestly they're America's (secret) Beatles, but with insane levels of quality control.

When I was younger my friends and I categorized this song in the "grown folks songs"! I honestly don't know why either. But there was an overabundance of great music and we were spoiled. We could dismiss a song for really silly reasons. But I'm kinda glad that I did, because I'm able to revisit them. We also put "Lowdown" by Boz Skaggs in that category and it's absolute 🔥 🔥 kzbin.info/www/bejne/f17LfHWjiaZ0etEsi=nf_QNSqKw8JAF-Zx. You should check it out.
