This version cuts out the great keyboard solo that follows the guitar (actually, electric sitar) solo. You should find the uncut version and listen again. Steely Dan has dozens of outstanding songs, all different, all brilliant, and always with very cynical and often cryptic lyrics. Don't miss Kid Charlemagne.

And it's not live, they've just synced (badly) the radio version onto a live video. Worst is that they make it look like Palmer is doing the vocals when it's actually Fagan.

Steely Dan was a full band initially but then dissolved to their 2 main talents, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen plus very talented studio musicians. Not too long ago I saw you do a Chick Corea video and you expressed difficulties following it. Even though Steely Dan was a "rock" band they have chord progressions and sophistication often found in jazz. They would be another good warmup for a jazz novice. Try "Rikki, Don't lose that Number" or "Aja" There's a ton of songs that veer away from straight rock, particularly on their later albums. "Aja" has some great jazz playing on it.

An English friend of mine was a sound engineer with bands like The Eurthymics and Tears for Fears....he said of Steely Dan that they were most known to be one of the greatest recording bands of all-time because they were so well schooled and methodical. I saw them live and thought they were brilliant

They have 7 or eight albums with this quality and musicianship. They are considered jazz infused soft rock, but if you listen carefully, you will find extraordinary guitar work and sophisticated drumming. Many in the US use SD as a way to distinguish themselves from your run of the mill headbanger's. A bit of a snob thing. I just think it is good music.

I’m surprised you hadn’t heard this band before now on your channel. Super popular. One of the best debut albums ever ( Can’t Buy a Thrill). Jazz infused soft rock with sometimes allot of funk. A staple of “yacht rock” playlists these days. They used top LA studio musicians for most of their run. Unique sound. Total perfectionists and top production quality.

Funny, I was talking about SD this past weekend with a friend. My friend commented that SD had a reputation as being difficult to deal with. I told my friend, Well, that may have been the case, but they were a true 70s rock fusion band that stayed true to their "thing" and their distinct sound. They are unmistakable.

I believe that Steely Dan quite often exercise "poetic license" in many of their songs. They will often use metaphors and at times are cryptic. As I recall the 70's I do not remember a lot of "rock" bands using congas and shakers. Santana comes to mind. I have always had a hard time labeling Steely Dan as a rock band. They are masters at mixing genre's into their music. Great reaction. Take care....

I do not know why they did it this way? However, the lead singer throughout Steely Dan's time and even today is Donald Fagen. It's his voice recorded for the song 'Do It Again' only. They ran the recorded version over a live performance here. At the time they had David Palmer who was a short time vocalist for their first album. Obviously, Plmaer was there for this performance. But it looks like Palmer was doing the lead vocals and Fagen backing Palmer at "You go back Jack, do it again..." Palmer did lead vocals for the song 'Dirty Work' from the same album, 'Çan't Buy A Thrill'. Fagen and Palmers voices are completely different. Then and only then did Fagen back anyone else besides himself. The other band members they had who could do the job were there to back Fagen. That's why this threw me for a bit

This was the first Steely Dan song to hit the FM airwaves. That was enough for me - I was a fan for life. (Still am.) Their lyrics are chock full of allusions and hidden meanings, but ultimately their songs all tell a story. The Dan of Steel did not have a set lineup - "they" were Walter B and Donald F, and they sought out the best of the best artists to work with, often varying the line up in the same album. Their engineering was cutting edge. Every album was different - new sounds, new styles, etc. Steely Dan are the artists' artists. As for which songs next - start with the album Can't Buy a Thrill (first album), grab anything from there. Then move on to Countdown to Ecstasy and do the same. At some point you will need to back up and listen to everything from each album - there isn't a bad cut on a one of them. This is a rabbit hole you will not regret diving into.

Steely Dan is an excellent band that released seven albums between 1972 and 1980. Donald Fagen (keyboards/vocals) and Walter Becker (guitar/bass) were the primary writers in the band. In fact, by the end of the decade there really wasn't a Steely Dan group as it was just Donald and Walter in the studio with whatever musicians they decided to use for a particular album. They stopped touring in 1975. Other songs to check out include Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Showbiz Kids, Reelin' In The Years, Bodhisattva, Black Friday, Doctor Wu, Aja, Deacon Blues, Gaucho and Time Out Of Mind. And there's lots more where those tunes come from.

The audio you're hearing here is the studio release edited to fit this live performance video. They completely edited out a spacey-sounding keyboard solo that comes after the guitar/sitar solo in the middle. If you have a chance, you should go back and listen to the full studio release to hear that. You would love it. This song was a big radio hit in the early seventies, but their sound changed with the times. Try their equally big 1977 hits "Peg" and Josie" for an equally impressive but pretty different sound.

(another rabbithole) In '75, I turned 18, graduated HS, and could buy beer. I saw Jaws in the theater and the Frampton "Comes Alive" tour in the summer, but the absolute highlight of the year was seeing The Who with Mooney in November. I've seen The Stones twice and Zep once, but that is still my favorite concert memory. Great year! I saw the Tommy tour twice in '89 and saw them once again in the early 2000s, before John passed. I liked Tommy, but Quadrophenia and this tune, Naked Eye, is what turned me into a Who fan. Because you always dig into the lyrics, here's another 10 from Pete Townshend. (and some of his best lead playing) It's Kenny Jones on drums, not Mooney, but still great. Genius lyrics. The Who Naked Eye kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaK0dI2EjMaAeLs RIP Mooney and John. Thank You!

Steely Dan was an unusual band, in that after their first album, they basically were the two founders, Brecker and Fagen, and a revolving group of studio musicians. As a result, they didn't tour live, and never achieved superstardom back in the day. They were very respected by other musicians, and it looked good on your resume if you played on one of SD's albums.

Thanks for this! Very insightful to recognize what you still have yet to hear from the '70's, even though you have heard so much. There were so many different artists that all had to play live consistently to survive. It was an entire world industry of local bands breaking out to regional/national/international. Others you may not have heard that are great: Talking Heads, Earth Wind and Fire, Aerosmith, Paul Simon, Kool and the Gang, Hall and Oates, The Doobie Brothers...These are examples of acts that made very good music over years in the '70's (and '80's) as well as selling out 15-20K venues every show. There are many more!

Steely Dan have their own unique sound, they mix jazz, funk, rock, blues and much more into their music. My favorite Steely Dan song is “FM-No Static at All” but other greats are “Black Cow” @Babylon Sister” and “ Deacon Blues” but they but have dozens of great songs!!! Enjoy the rabbit hole!!!

This comment comes almost a week late, but I noticed that no one mentioned their song, Black Cow, which is a great listen! It’s from the album “Aja”.
