Not me, but my first roommate. I went to a Christian liberal arts college in the mid 90s, and while this school did have some rules that would seem strict compared to most other universities, it was much more liberal than other Christian colleges. No smoking, drugs, gambling, or sex outside of marriage, separate dorms for boys and girls, and mandatory chapel twice a week. This was also still a lot more freedom than a lot of my classmates were used to. Many went to private Christian schools or were homeschooled, had strict house rules and curfews, and never did anything without their parents permission. It wasn't uncommon for freshmen to lose their minds that first semester. Having the ability to make adult decisions without parental supervision often turned out to be more than some could handle. So my first roommate, who just happened to be the daughter of 2 missionaries and grew up in several third world countries was expelled for smoking the devil's lettuce and getting pregnant because she didn't know what birth control was. Seriously people, please let your kids see some of the real world and teach them how to make responsible decisions. So many of those kids grew up so sheltered that they were totally unprepared for life away from their parents supervision. They either froze up and couldn't cope, or they went overboard because they never learned how to say no.

Universities around the world can be so weird, like, in some of these cases you have to "prove that you're worthy of the college"? Like? My man, I'm already paying? Bruh. AFAIK universities in my country only expell people if they break the law. You can be removed from scholarships if you don't meet certain criteria (I myself had a full scholarship due to grades/income and my rules were the same as everyone's), but that's about it.

Even for cheating?
@Naruneyl9 ай бұрын
@@brynna77 usually if you are caught cheating during a test the teacher just takes away your sheet and gives you an immediate zero on that test; that means you can still pass the semester if you learn from your mistake. If you cheat on other types of works (presentations, seminars, etc), which boils down to plagiarism, it depends on how much the teacher is willing to investigate your work; you'd have to make a very poor job for them to notice. And for the final thesis, you are graded and accompanied by at least three different teachers; you'd have to fool all of them at the same time to pull it off. This one has more repercussions if you're caught plagiarizing - which ranges from failing the semester to having your degree revoked. Private colleges are more laid back on rules because they want you to stay and keep paying. Federal universities have stricter rules, but I haven't been in one nor know anyone that went to one (they're super hard to get into), so I can't tell you about them.

Convenience: kind of ties back into the first two points it not being a hassle or having a good program that you're looking at compared to other schools could push it to the front. Lock picks in legal in most states but some do treat them as additional charges if you have em while commiting a crime
@misterbitey21079 ай бұрын
With regards to the very last story: 1) That student absolutely has grounds for a lawsuit there as long as they can provide evidence of the cops lying on their report, and could probably have gotten the charges dismissed. That being said, I do get having access to a lawyer who can make that go away is very different from knowing what happened was wildly illegal. 2) Possessing lockpicks is actually a crime in most states! It falls under the umbrella of "possession of thieves tools" though the definition of thieves tools is kind of vague. Technically a crowbar could be considered illegal to possess so context matters. That being said - if you're not a locksmith, it'd be kind of hard to justify owning lockpicks to authorities. That being said, as alluded to in number 1, the search was illegal in the first place.

While the welfare system in my country is good compared to most it is a nightmare to properly navigate (by design) and I was not in the mental place to do so. So, I got into university using my previous, quite good, GPA. University where I live is relatively cheap and the costs are differed also you get welfare while going to it the same as unemployment but no real paperwork beyond proving you have signed up to tertiary education. Obviously still being wrecked from my mental break down university wasn't really a good help for that. So I kind of coasted the first semester (first year subjects you really only need to go to lectures/ tutorials to be able to get a low pass in exams) but ended up failing out in the second. I've since sorted out my mental health. Got on some good meds and spent my own time on really working on myself. I'd love to go back to university but I feel too old now and because I tanked my GPA I can't just walk back into a course that I want. Story 7 (?): As someone who was in the Humanities.... it is such an Engineering comment to tell someone struggling in Engineering to 'go to the Humanities'. I swear that most STEM fields people have a real level of Dunning Kruger when it comes to the Humanities. To be fair it isn't that hard to get a passing grade in the first year. But getting high grades at the higher years takes work, understanding, and you don't really have the certainty you do in some STEM fields. Source. I have a bit of a story myself. This wasn't me, but I guy I knew from the liberal arts college I went to. I remember first meeting/seeing him in my ancient warfare class as he was a Freshman and I was a Junior at the time. He just kinda rubbed me the wrong way, like I could tell this guy was a bit of an a-hole with an overinflated ego. Even to the point where my friend who was a senior at the time had a lot of problems when put into a group with him for our final project to produce a presentation video on an ancient Roman battle. The very first question on that video when presenting was why she wasn't given credit in the presentation and he came up with some BS excuse on how she was difficult to work with and nothing was getting done (my senior friend wasn't there at the time for she was able to graduate a semester early and worked something out with the professor regarding the situation. The professor was definitely on her side in this situation. Also this was back in late 2019 so I was kinda happy she got out before the pandemic kicked off) but anyway, the next year after studying abroad the first semester of my senior year, I find out he started and was the president of the new esports club. A friend of mine did describe him as "the sun god" as this helped further boost that ego and I had another friend described that he was "mansplaining" to her assuming her knowledge in video games was inferior to his based on gender (she had multiple gaming consoles and often repaired PSP's in their spare time) he did host events around campus through the club and they were successful which I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. That's while I was in college, the rest of the story I learned this after I graduated with younger friends still attending. Appearantly through the esports club that he created and ran, he was embezzling club money that they get from the college so he can buy video game stuff for himself. I don't know how long he did this and the exact amount of money, but what I was able to find out that he stole into the thousands (I'm assuming at least 1.5k but I'm not sure for it's highly likely it was more, if I find out how much exactly I'll edit this part) as you can expect the college wasn't very happy at him literally stealing money from them, so he was promptly expelled and black listed from campus around mid-late November 2022 based on old Discord messages I could find. Honestly this guy completely had it coming and I would've paid good money just to see his parent's reaction.
