Unless you're a super insane talent at 17-18, it makes the most sense to go to college for all of the reasons John mentioned, even if its only for 1-2 years. Why not play still high level tennis(at the big D1 schools) and not have to pay a dime before going on tour and having to pay for every little expense out of your own pocket? I'm glad we're inching back towards the notion that if you go to college it doesn't mean your career has a predetermined ceiling. Before the last few years where college became popular again, the best kids were skipping college because it was seen as a knock on your talent. College hasn't been the popular move since McEnroe bros went to Stanford, back then a lot of the greats played in college.

Why is it surprising that people go to college? Most people cannot afford pro tennis if they weren’t bred that way since 12yo. Most players that are even considering pro tennis while still a junior already have a good chance of getting full rides if they’re playing the junior slams.

And to be in the top 300, usually you're holding a racquet at age 5 and hitting back 10k balls on the ball machine a year, the same as breeding a virtuoso musician, and even then countless things can happen to make it so that it never happens.

Nobody's driving a Lamborghini to their qualifying match to play in a challenger either. Plus not having the costs of a coach, a trainer, doctor visits in the case of injury, or travel.

College has always been the minor league for the tour. Tennis is the number 1 foreign sport in all of the NCAA. 75% of NCAA men and womens tennis are older foreigners. I never see anyone from the USTA or NCAA talking about how we are giving away our scholarships to non-americans and are simply a AAA option for the ATP and WTA tour.
