The best thing I ever did for college was roommate with my best friend from High School. I know there are so many horror stories about best friends living together but it's been a great experience for me. I'm an introvert so I'm really bad at opening up to new people and by living with someone who already knew me made me feel so much more comfortable. Edit: I'm a Theatre Major and my favorite classes (so far, I'm a third year) have been my Characterization class and my Audition class. I'm a Communications minor and I really liked my Interpersonal communications class because I had a really great professor.
@Monica12HG5 жыл бұрын
I'm gonna start my second year of uni and it's the first time I'm going to be living with my High School BFF.... I was a little bit nervous cause I wanna enjoy being with her as always and not fight for roomate things 😂, but now I feel much better. (My first year I lived with two girls who apparently hated everything I did, like eating vegetables (seriously) or meeting with other people, so thats why Im scared af)
@patricelinman71835 жыл бұрын
@@Monica12HG The best advice I have is communication. Make sure both people set and understand boundaries. Also just because you're best friends doesn't mean you have to do everything together. Alone time or time with other friends is really important.

Nobody: Christine: JOIN A CLUB (It is great advice though, especially if you don’t know what to major in! I definitely need to more join clubs this semester.)
@mickb.89255 жыл бұрын
Great advise indeed, but what if there are no clubs? :/
@valenciahidalg05 жыл бұрын
Mick B. If there’s no clubs and you wanted to look for a major through a club I suggest going to sit in a classroom/ talking to professors having to do with the major! Most professors are fine with you sitting in a class, especially if you’re doing it to find a major. If you wanted to find friends through a club you can instead start out by talking to people in your dorm and classes! You don’t have to become best friends with everybody right away but just getting to know people or making study groups can be the best way to find people you connect with.

I have never really had trouble waking up in the morning, but one of the most valuable lessons I learned in college is AVOID THE 8AM CLASSES AT ALL COSTS. I love how passionate you are about giving advice about the college experience! Can't wait for your next book, Christine!

Ohh, most universities in Australia don’t have shared bedrooms. We have communal kitchens etc, but our bedrooms are almost always single (except for special selection) because how are you supposed to study around someone else’s schedule and manage that stress. I can’t imagine having to room with someone.

I'm a neuroscience major, but you and your videos are a major reason I'm taking "Film as Narrative Art" (a cross listed film and English course at my school) this upcoming semester!

I love this advice. I am about to begin my sophomore year of college and did not get involved until more to the end of my second semester and regret it so so much. I wound up in a toxic living situation first semester and now I have tons of friends from my clubs and leadership opportunities and I have a pretty good plan for what I want to do. College is all about making connections and finding your passion. Be honest and be you because everyone else is just as nervous was you are and just as willing to make friends.

When you said the mid life crises after the year you get out of college I was like yuuuup that's me lol. It took me 5 years to get an associates at a 2 year school because I moved a lot in college and transferred several times,. But I could not get a job doing what I wanted to do in my area and without a bachelors, even though I have more experience than just an associates. So I'm going back to a 4 year college to get my bachelors in fine arts so I can get a job I want. I'm super excited to go back to school I always loved school. But I definitely had that mid life crises at 23 years old lol. But now things are back on track and I can graduate in 3 years with a bachelors and hopefully get a job I want! Love your college advice videos.

I'm a college instructor and no longer a student, but this was a fun video. I did a video on things I wish I knew before starting college too, but it's interesting to see tips from others that I can tell to students as well. My favorite class in undergrad was a round-table seminar on Tolkien and CS Lewis...we had a group project at the end, and I dressed up as Frodo and the others dressed up as Legolas and Aragorn. We served lembas bread...and got an A. :p Thanks for sharing your insights~

I’m a dancer and have been since I was 3 and joined my university’s dance company! I’m so excited to meet new people but you definitely helped me to branch out and actually audition as I’m pretty much a major introvert. So thank you SO much for helping to give me confidence and feel more at ease about this transition! ❤️ p.s. I also plan on studying abroad in London (as I love that city and I’m an English major) later on and I have to admit that you definitely helped to encourage me to make that decision as well!! Also also not gonna lie I’m definitely bringing the Harry Potter series and Fangirl with me to reread in the dorm!

I was so happy, Christine, when I saw this video. I wish I had seen you were taking questions! I currently have some anxieties about college, and I hope it’s okay if I express them here and reach out to, well, anyone who sees/ reads this. I am going into my sophomore year of college. After going my first semester, I was scared away and terrified to go back, and ended up taking a leave of absence and doing online classes my second semester. I am very excited but also terrified to go back to campus in the fall. This might seem like a complete 180, but I just read ABB- after all my friends told me it was perfect for me- and I cannot tell you, Christine, how much the book resonated with me. I am a deeply introverted, nerdy, socially awkward girl who left so overwhelmed and out of place at a college campus. I was surrounded by people so different from me, who felt so much older. Like Shane, I’m not only awkward and nerdy- I’m inexperienced (and also have a longing to travel/ plan to study abroad). Throughout middle school and high I was seen as the weird, short fat girl who nobody really wanted. I’m 4’10, so even at 19 I’m still seen as a little girl. To this day I haven’t even kissed a boy, or had any boy interested in me, and next to my dorm mates who were... umm... let’s just say far more advanced in their relationships... I left absolutely mortified, uncomfortable, and out of place. So first I want to thank you Christine for writing such an important book which hit so close to my heart. I suffer from severe OCD and anxiety and anxieties- but also excitement- are running high as going back looks in the near future for what’s seems like has been forever. Though introverted I am deeply social, and I am lucky to have found a small group of friends and joined organizations and clubs which I love. However, under the pressure and being in the culture of my overall campus as a whole I still want to crawl into a little ball and cry sometimes. I’m wondering- do you, Christine (or anyone reading this) have ANY advice for a socially awkward, introverted individual like myself who just feels... different, and totally out of place in the college scene? There are many positives about my college which I am looking forward to and trying to hold onto, but the nerves are still killing me and I want to set myself up for happiness and a good year. I too am an aspiring author, and hopefully like Shane I can one day fall in love, travel abroad, and get a book published. Once again, I would like to thank you for writing a book which resonated so deeply in my heart. As an Italian- American girl I also loved you also gave her an Italian last name (Last name Spadafora, here 😆). I’d also like to thank you such an inspiration to me over the years (I’ve been watching since I was 11 years old). You’ve also inspired me to hopefully join Booktube soon when I get back to campus! Sorry this is so long, and if this is kind of personal to post as a comment here on KZbin. It would so much to hear from people, especially anyone who might be feeling the same way.

Since I was an English major, I had a Creative Writing class but it was so unfortunate that my professor was so close-minded and not at all encouraging. I did well in the class since I got a 4.0 but I wish I had a better professor. It was still ok tho since I was able to write stories and poems; and there were important things that I learned. I loved my Stylistics class, Literary Criticism, Anglo-American Literature, and research classes! My professors in those classes were brilliant and filled w compassion that I really enjoyed learning from them. HAHA just sharing. I agree that it is important to join clubs or school organizations since that was where I got to meet a lot of people. However, I was lucky enough that the classmates I had became my closest friends. College was wonderful. It was difficult but I had the best time. Since I recently just graduated, I am in the point of my life where I don’t know what to do next; just like what you talked about, Christine. I hope I’ll get through it too just like you did! Thank you very much for this video.💖

At my Uni we have classes that are mandatory for your Major and then breadth (elective) classes. I always do a fine arts class as my elective which is fun. And since my major doesn’t have a lot of mandatory classes, I get to spend a lot of time trying different things. Last semi I did creative writing so this sem I’m doing Intro to Media writing. The funny thing about that is we have to do an opinion piece, and my teacher asked me if I had any strong opinions I could write about and I had to laugh... I’m a Gender Studies major. Yes, I have many opinions.
