I TRIED TO ANSWER QUESTIONS YALL ASKED ABOUT COLLEGE. And I only got to like two because these questions take time and I tried to tell you about my own experiences and I didnt want to talk forever because I have two hours and forty five minutes of lord of shadows booktalk footage I'm working through right now (and my voice was really shot from recording lord of shadows). LoS booktalk SHALL BE UP AS SOON AS I CAN GET IT DONE. i'm thinking Wednesday night/Thursday afternoonish. We'll see! THERE'S SO MUCH MORE COLLEGE STUFF I COULD TALK ABOUT and questions I didn't get to answer so I'll save those for another time when I can do a more thorough video. These are my big picture tips! I hope they're helpful in some way shape or form.

Another tip: besides clubs (if clubs aren't your thing), find some small group of people who do a fun activity that has nothing to do with your classes. I am an industrial design major and I go to a small poetry open mic every week near my university. Find something so you can de-stress with other people. It helps a lot.

Sure I am. I only leave my room for three reasons: classes, food, and the open mic. I don't talk to people, except the four or five poets that show up. There are other people in the coffee shop we go to, but they don't listen so I can get through stage fright because the audience is so small and likes me (which I am super lucky for). My university is big, so this is about as publically introverted as I can get.

COLLEGE TIP: JOURNAL. The night before I moved to college, I journaled what I thought the experience would be like. Since that day, I've journaled consecutively for almost two years. Haven't skipped a single day. My only rules are 1) write knowing no one besides you will ever see it and 2) write every single day, even if all you do is write one word or a sentence. Some days I do write one word, other days I fill five pages. But having my entire college experience documented like that has been incredible. You will never feel the same way about your life as you do on the day that it's happening. Being able to see how stressed I was about something and then having concrete proof it was okay has been wonderful. Sometimes things turn out worse than I thought, too - it's not all sunshine and roses. Still though, I like to think about journaling as my past self looking for my future self. I can't express enough how much journaling has helped me put my college experience into perspective.

This was a great video Christine. I graduated from college a year ago and I have a lot of the same regrets you mentioned. A video like this definitely would have helped me in the past when I was first starting out. To those thinking about their first year at college, I second Christine's recommendation of living on campus. The people that plan out who you'll room with tend to find things in common with both of you in hopes that you'll click. The person I was roomed with had the same last name and first time job, that we talked non-stop after the second day on campus and found so much more in common. We became best friends and even ended up renting an apartment together for the last two years.

I'm only a sophomore in high school but I've been thinking a lot about college. As far as my major goes I don't really know what I want to do. Maybe English??? I know I like to write and I'm also into art. I guess my problem is I really don't know for sure what I want to do with my life.
@estherasselin5227
@estherasselin5227 7 жыл бұрын
Just remember when you're choosing to make it something you can easily get a job with! I know quite a few people who have gotten degrees in psychology (not to say that it's bad to a degree in that, or that no one should) or another Bachelor of Arts and they then had to go back to school to a get a degree that they could use.
@jenny-bu4le
@jenny-bu4le 7 жыл бұрын
Well just because you are interested in English and art does not mean that you are limited to being an English teacher or an artist. Just look at it this way: that one thing (or things) that you are interested in aren't just subjects, they're keys and they open up a whole gate of possibilities. Look into paths that involve these things. You can also try to explore other pathways that are new and fresh to you. Also, I don't think it's too early to start thinking about college. Just last year I was a sophomore and I went to visit some of the best universities in Cal, like Merced, Berkeley, Davis and others. I encourage you to join a club or venture out on your own.

It's fine to not know what you want to do now! I just finished my first year of college and I started out as a psychology major with the intent of becoming a child psychologist now I'm a speech pathology major and want to work in the NICU. You still have time to decide, take classes you don't know much about in high school you might end up loving that. Talk to your guidance counselor about taking career inventories. I highly recommend if you really are unsure at the end of senior year to go to community college for 2 years then transfer. That way you can have more time to decide and get all your gen eds/prerequisites out of the way. If you are considering a few schools look at their gen ed requirements it will say on their website that way you can take the equivalent of those courses at the community college and be guaranteed that they'll transfer to the 4 year. Good luck!!

Although I joined Thai college, I find this video really relatable and nostalgic! I do agree with the club thing. Being an introvert myself, I can say that it was not easy at all. I remembered joining chorus club and the first month I was there in the corner only smiling and talking to no one, like, 'I'm here to sing, so please don't talk to me.' But one thing about my club was that everyone needed a practice like 3-4 times a week. I took my time and little by little I started to talk and got to know some friends from my section. (Like, I needed to communicate because in chorus we worked as a team.) I also knew my boyfriend from the club and we have been dating for seven years already. It's a great place to find someone who have mutual interests. And once you fit in, you will feel so good about yourself. I was afraid I would be judged, but there were soooo many people in college, soooo many types and I was so lucky no one judged me for being a bit weird. Like, people don't care much how weird you are. They would say you are just being creative. Choosing the right major is also crucial. Because what I studied was also what I was passionate about and it was the same for my friends. So we spent most of our time talking and discussing topics we had common interests. It felt so good. I also found best friends in college who are also introverts and understand my crazy world! So don't be afraid. College has places for almost everyone. Some just needs more time to find their place than others.

I've just finished uni in England and I'm very similar regarding the societies. I went round the freshers fair with my flatmates and didn't want to put my name down for anything incase they thought I was a weirdo; I ended up hating my flat at the end of first year anyway so it didn't make any difference. Also I would recommend doing mixed halls instead of single gender like I did. I thought being all girls it would be clean and everyone would get along but I think I had loved a sheltered life regarding female friendships beforehand!

If money is an issue (or even if it isn't and you like saving money), COMMUNITY COLLEGE! There is NOTHING wrong with that; it's so much cheaper and you have a wide variety of options for classes and then you have a higher chance of getting into colleges as a transfer student. CC DOES NOT have to mean that you're a bad student or not smart enough to get into uni (I started with CC and I still have my 4.0 after 20+ classes and I'm an honor's student/English tutor/oceanography tutor/oceanography TA). I tested out of high school when I was 16 and started going part-time to the community college that's ten minutes from my house. If I hadn't gone to CC, I would have been in the wrong major, never realized my true passion (English/writing), never fell in love with oceanography, and spent many many many times the amount that I did to get the "same" classes out of the way (though they probably would not have been as good because my CC atmosphere is incredible and inviting and out of my 20+ classes there, I only had two professors I didn't like).

Pro tip: If you are at a flat/house party and don't want to talk to anyone just keep drinking and eventually you will be sick, this will give you something to occupy the designated time.

I want to go to college but I have to wait until I'm nineteen to save up. I'm honestly scared of the SATs more than anything. Having anxiety makes standardized tests so scary for me.

I have anxiety too (like, suuuuper bad anxiety; I've cried during millions of tests in class) but trust me, the SAT is one of the least nerve wracking tests I've ever taken, JUST because it's so long. It's hours long, so it's SO boring I literally couldn't be anxious 😂

Kenzie Staley It also helps to take both the SAT and ACT. Personally, I'd already gotten my scores back from the ACT when I took the SAT, and I was MUCH less stressed knowing that I didn't have to solely rely on my SAT scores.

Both my parents went to BU, they met, got married and moved back to teach there like 10 years later. So I lived by BU and was on Campus all the time through 2009. When were you in college there? It's mind blowing to think that little me might have passed next to my current idol when I didn't even know it.

As an almost graduate though, I back this advice so much. I lived in a dorm my first year and an apartment the next year. I wish I had been more active in clubs. It's cliche but it's true: DO WHAT SCARES YOU, it'll pay off in the end. Meeting new people is scary, but I can guarantee you it'll be less scary in a college environment than it will be in the "real world."

I had a completely different college experience! I did community college for 2 years and lived at home, then transferred to a state school, lived off campus and then for my last year, I moved back home and commuted to the campus in my town. It was an interesting experience. I didn't join a sorority, I didn't study abroad, I didn't live in a dorm. But I did join clubs, I was involved in organizations. I made tons of friends and loved my program a lot! College isn't for everyone and the "typical" college experience isn't for everyone either, especially if you're putting yourself through school financially like I did! Do what's best for you! If you're still reading this, I just started my own channel and I'd love if you checked it out! You don't need to subscribe but if you did, that would be great! Thanks so much!

I think it's a good thing to remember that you can always transfer! Sometimes you don't find the perfect fit immediately, and that's OKAY. Life is always more flexible than you believe it can be - don't panic if you get to university and realize it isn't the right place for you! I ended up transferring to a different university, and I'm so happy I chose this path. There's no one way - everyone has to make their own paths and it's ok if yours takes a couple turns before you end up loving where you are! :)

I wish I had studied abroad. I have a bachelors and a masters in French and I have never visited France. Hopefully, I will find time to visit in the next few years. I know the language very well, but I don't know much about the culture. My colleagues have told me that you learn more about culture than anything else on study abroad trips.

Your shirt! That's the year I was born :D I always wondered what it would have been like to live at college, I had to commute to my state school for financial reasons. I also wish I had joined more clubs at the beginning. I started to by the last couple semesters, but at that point my workload was so heavy that the clubs seemed to just add more stress to everything XD Still, it is a cool mini community to be a part of :)
