This is not everything you need to know. The nearest target is 10 min by car, 20 by bus, and groceries in iv are upcharged. Rent is also exponentially more expensive than anywhere else and its clearly directly targetting students who have nowhere else to go. I look at apartments in seattle to imagine what affordability is no joke. Landlords are crap here and try taking advantage of students to charge them exorbitant fees. Parties can be pretty gatekeepy and the school is trying to prevent people from charging for parties or restricting all of them but its hard to stop people from requiring a groupme to get in. And if you’re unattractive guys will make you feel like walking trash here. They wont let u in parties and a girl i know parked in front of a frat and they vandalized her car and left a note calling her ugly and disgusting

A few things: That big party day was known as Flotopia, and used to take place on the beach, but the college kids would leave it so trashed, that it was banned on the beach. It was the #1 HIV positive University for a few concurrent years. Food and cafes are not all over campus. There is food all around Isla Vista, but not the campus. They have a Panda Express though. Isla Vista is an unincorporated part of Goleta. The houses on the beach front side of Del Playa rd. are crumbling into the ocean because of the substanial erosion. People fall off and die on the cliff on Del Playa all the time. That tunnel is creepy at night.

Been in Santa Barbara since 1967. I recall the time radicals burned down the Bank of America there in IV. Cost of living is insane. You will have many students from out of town who come from insanely wealthy families. Not a good thing. At the junior college level is the cross town SB City College. Poorly managed. More foreign students who pay out the nose to go there. Drives rental prices up crazily. Wealthy foreign parents pay their way for their little rich kids. In IV they once described it as being as densely populated as Hong Kong. I believe it. Car ownership by students in IV is a big liability-no place to park. Law enforcement for IV is a big joke. The local sheriff is on a power trip. Proceed with caution. Climate is no where as good as it was 50 years ago. Very humid today. Crowded, expensive. Best departments are engineering and physics. However, job prospects are best by leaving town after graduation. In one large defense contractor in town we called the kids ”RCGs,” Recent College Graduates. They eventually figure out they couldn’t afford to stay there. There is final tip about the SB area. BRING MONEY. Undergrad Graduate of UCSB.
