Girl let me tell you something. I was a mostly A student my whole life, honor roll from 1st grade to 12th EVERY SEMESTER, skipped 10th grade, graduated with honors. . .AND I'M JUST ABOUT TO GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE IN MAY AT THE AGE OF 33! I could have gotten a full ride and had my doctorate by now. But hey. Life happens to the best of us. Be encouraged!

Tiffany G Wow! It's crazy how similar our stories are... I just got my degree at the age of 33 as well! I got discouraged along the way but I had to finish for my sons that I had while I was in college. So encouraged to see someone else with a similar story! All the best to you and yours in 2017!

Christal williams yeah college is definitely not for everyone. Some people go, just to go and don't even know why they're going. They just end up stressed and with MAJOR debt. Society has made it such a big deal to go to college when it's so not necessary for everyone. There are so many things wrong the education system here in America. We definitely shouldn't take the opportunity we have to learn for granted, but there's no reason it should be THIS emotionally challenging for basically every student.

I screwed around at parties and with girls more than I studied and did homework. Switched schools, got my financial aid back and after this first semester I'm sitting at a 4.0 gpa. Don't give up anyone :)

mike lambert advice pleeeaase. how did you get the motivation ?
@mikeyhope75777 жыл бұрын
Kyra Peters Idk if anyone can ever give you advice on how to get yourself motivated. I just looked at my future and saw that I would be poor, miserable, and terribly in debt if I failed school. I didn't want to give up and be a failure. Just find whatever drives you and focus on it. If you want to be in school and want to be successful, you'll find the drive one way or another. If you don't want to be in school and hate it, maybe school just isn't for you. And that's okay. Not everyone needs to be in college to live a happy, successful life. Just do you, because in the end, you're only trying to improve yourself one way or another.

@Mangobunnyem8 жыл бұрын
luceymajor my perspective on it , is that many people want to live that "classic rich life" where you graduate , go to college, get married and die with a genetically impossible husband or wife. for one I don't like how society brainwashed us with that lifestyle. Many of us are forced to go to college because our parents want us to go. You shouldn't go if you aren't desired to go just because your parents tell you to. If you want to not go to college and become a singer or do something else go DO IT. ITS NEVER TO LATE. Many of us say "I wish I could do that or blah blah" , but instead of wasting your time just go ahead try to find ways to find out what you really want to do or you want to do. {sorry for my rant it just pisses me off seeing how we are pressured into going into college}

This happens to young people all the time. When you're in your 20's you are still figuring things out. I have friends who couldn't finish college for different reasons. One of my friends got pregnant our sophomore year in college, had her son, and still graduated with honors. I barely made it through college because I mostly hung out with my friends and was lazy. I had to go to summer school. I only graduated with a 2.2 GPA. I was told by my professor that I would never get accepted into Grad school because my GPA was too low. Guess what? Five years later I was accepted into grad school and in 2014 I graduated with my masters with a 3.8 GPA. So just because we make mistakes doesn't mean we can't recover!! Sometimes it takes 5 or 6 years to graduate college and that's ok!! Do things at your own pace!! Good Luck!!

You're still graduating. You're NOT a failure! You didn't give up, you're still in school. You're NOT a failure! You persevered (that alone is an accomplishment). You're NOT a failure! You're only 23! So, you fucked up a little bit. That is what being in your 20s is all about - ups and downs (life). You're going to have hiccups in life, so enjoy the ride. Pick yourself up, and keep it moving - you did that and continuing doing it whenever you encounter something like this again. That is one of your many life lessons.
@mscardioqueen8 жыл бұрын

mscardioqueen yeah she really is! lol me and my friends are stuggling, most of my friends are in college plus I felt bad because I picked a trade school first along with being looked down on and I graduated this year from trade school and final got a job that pays pretty good so I can pay those loans =-=. I feel like we put college over everything but failed to see that it's so much pressure on young people because people feel like it determine whether you're worth everything or nothing. I want to go back to school for a 4 year for engineering but I'm scared of the dept and not being able to find a good job so I kinda planned work get all the experience I need then go to school.
@mscardioqueen8 жыл бұрын
@ MisBlackMutilation You felt bad for picking a trade school? Whaaaaat? Trade school/college/university - it makes no difference. As long as you choose to do something that you are passionate about then do it. Trade jobs pay well! I wish I could pick up a hammer, saw, or do welding, etc those jobs pay over 30$/hr - those are specialization jobs. I know people who do trade work, including my brother and he loves it. Me, on the other hand, I just don't have the patience. I would rather hire you. Not everyone can do it. I admire you more because you're a woman practicing a trade - in a man's domain. That is an excellent idea. Now your educated, you have experience and go into the working world and get real world experience and yes when you are ready go back to school and get your engineering degree. Nothing wrong with that!
@MisBlackMutilation8 жыл бұрын
mscardioqueen Thank you! :) I only felt bad because trade school are looked down on so much. I went for computer networking and support tech since my main field I want to be in is technology. Definitely right on the "mans field" nothing but men in my class only women in there! Passed on top and received the reward for my major. Even though I don't make 30/hr (I wish) for my first real job with only a couple day out of school I got a job starting at 17/hr full time and I'm praying I can handle it when I start!

I have a very close friend who flunked out of college. He didn't tell his parents. He had a job (not related to his major) lined up across the country and left pretty soon after graduation (the school we went to will allow you to participate in the ceremony if you already registered to partake and you failed a class in your last semester). Usually, the school will mail the actual diploma to the permanent address of the student -- which 99% of the time is the house you grew up in, where your parents are. Since my friend had an older sibling that graduated from the same school, his parents began to wonder why they hadn't got the degree in the mail. They asked and my friend said he changed the permanent address so he'll be getting it. At one point, his mom told him to send him a picture of his degree and he very sloppily faked one on Microsoft Word and snapped a super blurry pic of it on his phone. She seemed to buy it. Even though not having a diploma wouldn't affect his life in anyway -- since the line of work he's in doesn't require any form of degree -- he decided to sneak in an online course 2 years later and complete the class he failed to get that diploma. When he finally got it in the mail, he worked his magic to very meticulously alter the date on the diploma to change it to the date when he should have graduated 2 years prior & then framed it. He gave it to his parents and they have it hung up on the wall none the wiser.

Reading the comments and watching this video breaks my heart.. truly. This is the reason why people hate school. They put way too much pressure on you and when you fail, you're assumed you won't do good in life. Especially when your parents are in on it too, giving you shit about it. It's not fair really.. it's just too much sometimes. I've thought about giving up so many times just because my mind simply stresses about school 24/7, even on days when I try to relax it's "oh did I forget to do something?" Or "please let me pass this test" and it's just horrible.. I hope things work out for all of you.

Don't stress. College is pretty awesome and I go to one of the most difficult schools in the US. Everyone can make it through if you study something you're passionate about and actually do the work. Doing the work is the most important part, the school is not trying to set you up for failure.

Pick a major that is practical and will earn you a decent income upon graduation. If you don't have the help of your parents or grants from the government, then go to a public school within your home state. Ta da problem solved.
@ifrekect7 жыл бұрын
You are better than me. I broke down crying because you had the courage to tell your parents. I’m in the same boat. I just turned 25 last month. I’ve switched schools 5 times and each time I would have to retake something that I had taken from the previous school, because the credit didn’t transfer. I’ve been in college for 7 years now trying to finish my bachelors. I haven’t told my parents the situation I’m in and they think I’m in school but I’m not right now. I was on academic probation and then I got suspended for a semester and then I got suspended again for a year. They have such high expectation of me and I also have 4 younger siblings. I feel like I’ve failed myself and I’m a failure to my family. My boyfriend knows my situation and a few close friends. They are very supportive and they encourage me to go back. This spring I will be able to enroll for classes again. But I’m terrified guys. What if I fail again? I do study and ask questions. My major is mathematics. I’m not terrible at it. I do know there are others that are smarter than I am, and I love that because I usually go to them for help if I don’t understand the instructor. I think I’m just not confident in myself. In high school I did so well, in community college I did very well too but when I started going to my university… I really don’t know. I do miss the professors from my previous university. They actually wanted to help and even when I showed then that I know nothing. They never made me feel less of myself. My dad wants me to graduate before he retires and moves back to our country, and my mom she tells all her friends about me and she says all these nice things about her brilliant daughter. Every time she does that I always want to stop her from praising me because I don’t deserve it. I’m sorry for such a long comment but I’ve been keeping this bottles up and after watching this, I felt like I should say something. I do need to tell them. And guys, I literally have 4 classes that are preventing me from gradating. These 4 classes I keep failing. Number theory, Abstract algebra, Statistics/ probability & Math software and applications. Each of those classes I have taken at least 2 times. I think 2 of them I have taken 3 times. I don’t get those classes. I’ve gone to study hall, I’ve had tutors, help from friends and the professor, Help from KZbin and the internet, Self-study sessions. I don’t know why I fail those classes. I want to graduate so badly, but I’m so scared. My younger siblings are in college as well and they have some struggles too. I feel so bad because how can I help them out when I can’t even help myself. I just feel like I have dug large hole and I’m stuck in it.

Ifreke Thompson Oh, girl. I know that you've heard this, but DON'T GIVE UP. You are a beautiful person. Maybe it's the stress that you have that is making you feel bad. Don't listen to it. Work if you can talk to your mother about your situation, always struggling with stress and keeping everything to your mind it's not healthy. Talk to that specific person (your mom) to relief yourself. Your mind has to be in peace to work on what you want, love yourself. Sorry for the long comment. 😊

4 more classes. I know you tried a lot in the past. But please don't give up. Tomorrow is another day. This time might just be it. Keep talking with your teachers and other TAs and find out that other than stress what else is preventing you from doing well. You're not committing a crime, you just need a bit of time. Take a deep breath and carry on.

@Bujun you know what since millennials are the most retarded generation I'm not all too shocked by what you said. Parents have no right to do everything for their offspring, parents have all the right to disown their children since time immemorial they have done exactly this and it makes biological sense considering by cutting yourself away from a self-destructive child is like cutting away a parasite. Parents have a responability only if that child is benefitting his parents. You are truly making no sense because for example if a child is in and out of prison is it really the parent's responasbility to still help out that grown man?

I just found this video and you've probably graduated by now but girl i started crying with you on this because i felt 100% the same way you did when you thought that you couldn't do school, i felt the exact same way in high school, in grade 10 i was so insanely stressed from school and my classes were extremely demanding and i just felt like i couldn't do it and i made the decision that i was dropping out of high school and i broke down to my mom and told her my decision (i have a single mother so no father situation) and i just felt like such a disappointment, but my mom convinced me to keep going and if i really wasn't happy we'd look into other ways of schooling. School for me by no means got easier, if anything it got so much harder but i think for me what made it bearable was the fact that it wasn't a secret anymore, i was able to actually tell my mom and my friends how i was feeling instead of bottling it up and pretending to be happy. Finished school last year with reasonable grades, i never studied my ass off, my goal wasn't to get straight A's or B's or anything my goal was just to finish, the fact that i had my certificate was much more substantial than what was on it for me personally and my mom understood that. Parents can be amazing sometimes.

I am an honors student but I've chosen to take time off from school because my parents basically chose my degree for me and I was expected to follow in my sister's footsteps with pretty much no say in the decision. I realized I have no idea what I would even do with my degree and that there was no passion. I worked so hard but was miserable and on anti depressants to cope with the stress and pressure so I'm taking time to find out what it is that I want for myself and what I'm passionate about. I realized you can't force yourself to pursue something you don't want just because society says that's what you're supposed to do to be "successful." I will create my own success.

I graduated from college two years ago and I can't even find a damn job. I've been at the same job for 4 years and all they require is a high school diploma. I get discouraged and sad a lot because I want more for myself. I've been looking for a career since before graduation.

Oh girl you are just a semester behind... This is NO problem lol I'm 21 in my senior year of college and I have watched people drop out, or take 7 years to get there undergraduate degree. Do it at YOUR OWN PACE. Do not live up to anyone expectations. Take care of you. You are an adult. We were all young and make mistakes. I think your parents were more upset because you took so long to tell them, but other than you are fine!! Graduate in May and start your life. I support you!! Be strong. You got it girl. Congrats on making it this far. Much blessings to come.

It's honestly so sad how the american system is. Like don't the upper people realize that there is something wrong with the school system, when kids are crying themselves to sleep and feel so pressured and begging their parents to not make them go, that there is something wrong. Cause i know there is a way to make school enjoyable and still be able to learn, but no we practically feel trapped inside, and whenever we say something society just says "it's ok everyone goes through it". But no human should feel that way, school shouldn't have to weigh you down and pull on you mentally and emotionally. I know a person who almost killed themselves because of school, because they just weren't happy and it was making them emotionally damaged. That's not healthy. I'm going to 8th grade soon, and i honestly feel like i shouldn't be so scared as i am. It shouldn't be like this at all. It's horrible, and it needs to stop.

Girl... Let me tell you something... I'm 23 now, so this was probably 5-6 years ago, during my first year of college. I was so unbelievably depressed and stressed out right at the beginning of the year because my mom was in the hospital basically on her death bed... I quit going to classes about 2 months in. I had my boyfriend at the time picking me up an hr into my school days, every day... and then he would drop me at the hospital when I was supposed to be done school and I'd tell my mom that I'd gone to classes and whatnot. I still went occasionally and handed in assignments here and there but all of my tests and exams were pretty much all failed, and I knew that going into them. The day I got my letter saying I had failed all but two of my classes, I was absolutely devastated. Not because I had failed, but because I had to tell my mom about it. I told her that night when I went to visit her at the hospital. She didn't yell, she wasn't even mad. She took it as calmly as possible, I think because she understood what I was going through. Fast forward a few years, I have completed 2 programs, graduated both and am working a full time job. And believe it or not.. I have FULL intentions in going back to school within the next year or so. You can do it girl, you WILL do it. It will take time and motivation, but you'll get out of your funk. It will be okay 💖

+London Peach Awesome. Thank you so much for your support. Yes. In my book, I discuss the challenges of overcoming setbacks in undergrad, overcoming rejection, essay writing, getting recommendation letters etc. I also talk a bit about my journey and the things I did to turn my academic situation around. I even put a starter scholarship index in the back to get students starting to look at scholarship s and what to look for. Yes. You can apply to your B.A. as I have. For Masters you can appply the techniques but as we know getting your Masters is a different ball game and each program is different. Thank you so much for your support as I continue getting my book in the school systems. Hope this helps Toi

Man this post hit home for me, seeing this post gives me that extra level up in my confidence. The fall semester ended up being a great one and through moderately hard work I was able, by the skin of teeth, to get A'S and B'S. You are the strong one and through adversity you have prevailed, your right the turnover is what counts, so lets make it count :-).

Precious Brown I had the same problem with almost being homeless. It set me back so much and on top of that, being the first of my family to go to college, I was ignorant to a lot of things (which has also contributed to my progress). Seeing this video, and reading comments like yours really encourages me to keep pushing forward, because having a BA is something I REALLY want! Good luck to you! and thank you!😊

Jennifer Lee I'm 32 and am just finishing my undergrad, headed for grad school. After highschool my parents put a crazy amount of pressure on me and I went to university for something I had no interest in and changed programs twice. I ended up going back to adult ed at 26 and got into the University I had originally intended on going to in another city. I was diagnosed with a learning disability and realized why I hadn't been successful before. I am passing my courses with A's and B's. You never know where life is going to take you, I'm glad you have supportive parents and that you have that strength to persevere. Keep working hard! Also to anyone thinking they are too old for school, take it from it and done let it be something you regret, just go for it!

If anyone out there thinks they can't do school you totally can do anything. For example my mother did really bad in high school and almost didn't graduate and got some random job out of high school. Now she is 50 and decided to go to college and just got her degree and had the highest grades in her class. Never give up and reach for your goals.

I remembered getting expelled because I didn't take my university lessons seriously so I had a gap year of learning a foreign languange and being in a very bad state of fluctuation and it feels like i'm just floating in this big sea with nowhere to go when i told my mom about the news of course she was dissapointed but rather on dwelling on the problem she helped me on finding out what's the next solution and found articles about college dropouts being sucessfull people to motivate me , now I'm writing my thesis for my second university and i hope that i graduate soon. I told her by text so i guess it's not as bad lol but i can still feel the disapointment through the written words
