College Vlog: iPad Unboxing & Starting a New Semester - Michigan State University

Couple suggestions/recommendations. 1. There's an app called istudiez that's really great for tracking everything school related. From your schedule/class location to teachers contact info, office hours, homework, tests/exams. You can also track your grades on it too. I recommend taking the time at the beginning of the semester to input everything from your syllabus into it and you'll be set to go for the rest of the semester. 2. As for how to take your notes, I recommend doing all your note-taking on your iPad. Use different notebooks for different type of notes (in-class notes, review notes, etc). The main benefit to having the iPad with the Apple Pencil is the fact that you can take handwritten notes, which are better for memory retention, on it. Taking paper notes means carrying more things to school with you, as well as the risk of losing your notes and being SOL. Another benefit to taking notes on your iPad is being able to use the search feature to look for words/phrases in your notes. 3. For the best note taking system, I would recommend Notability for in class notes as the audio recording system on there is amazing, and GoodNotes for review notes. GoodNotes is a lot better, in my opinion, when it comes to writing notes that you may want to print out later. It also handle importing PDFs better. You can use both of these apps in split view so having them both open as you rewrite notes won't be a problem at all. 4. Still carry 1 notebook and a couple pens to class in case you ever have to write something down to turn in to the teacher. You don't have to follow anything I said but just wanted to share some suggestions I came up with as a former paperless student myself.

Last semester was my first time using GoodNotes and doing digital notes in the beginning it’s gunna take a minute to get good and fast at note-taking but I would DEFINITELY get an apple pen cover. It makes it so much easier to take notes because the pencil is to slick and get a Paper-like screen protector its amazing! Makes the screen feel like the texture of real paper!!

I use/ switched to notability because of the audio recording tool (though apparently Noteshelf has such a tool too). It saved me so many times omg 🤩 I used to use GoodNotes but I hate the handwriting engine of the 5. I used to adore GN4 though (I still use it despite of it not having support from the developers). I stopped writing in physical notebooks this year and I’m completely loving it. My back never aches anymore, the strap of my bag never rips, life is great with the iPad. Also, I have every note and textbook of mine with me at all times and that is a big plus) 🤩

May I recommend a different note taking method? Since you have already bought Notability-- I recommend you write your not so neat lecture notes on there AND record the lecture. Your notes will automatically back up to google drive.You can then access your handwritten notes you took on notability from a laptop/desktop and take your new, neat notes on your ipad that way. I love using Notability more than Goodnotes only because Goodnotes doesnt back up to google drive and because it doenst allow me to record the lecture in case I miss something.

This way you wouldnt have to carry extra notebooks around! Just a friendly suggestion from someone who has both of the apps and likes them both:) I use Goodnotes to daily journal. I bought a 20 dollar journal from Etsy with clickable tabs and it has worked for me really well

I started taking notes on my ipad last year and I really enjoy it. I currently use micrsoft OneNote (free) and upload our powerpoints in there. Next to the slides I´m taking notes or writing my own documents (for example in physics since we don`t have slides there). But I`m still writing my summaries on paper since that just looks way nicer and I feel like I can remember the information better this way. Love your studying and taking notes videos by the way :)

If your professors upload power points before the class, I would recommend either printing out the power points and writing notes on the sheet while following along during class or annotating the PowerPoint on your iPad. Then you can rewrite your notes more neatly later on. From your neat detailed notes you can make a quizlet and review material like that. This is just how I take notes but wanted to give you some tips if you still need them! :)

I know I’m a little late to the game but, for paper notes I got a Rocketbook which is a notebook that you can scan to your google drive then erase. So it is basically a reusable notebook. I love it, especially if you are trying to o paperless or anything.

What I do with my iPad is take notes on downloaded powerpoints on my iPad and then copy them nice and neat handwritten into a notebook :)

In goodnotes I have two notebooks for each class, one for lecture and one for notes. I make messy notes in the lecture notebook and open it in goodnotes on my laptop when I get home and make neater notes in the other one. Or you can make your messy lecture notes in OneNote since its free and the page is endless, and it syncs to your laptop too. Hope this helps!

Fisher Ifemide I personally would recommend using a matte screen protector like Paperlike. It helps so much with being able to control your handwriting. Also it took me a good 3 mondths to get used to writing digitally in general.

Fisher Ifemide also, use the magnifier tool, it magnifies a section and so you have more control over your handwriting. Also, grid paper is great for planning how to lay out your notes

No, you don’t. I have the iPad 2018 (the one they launched for students that was cheaper but compatible with the pencil) and I take notes with those stylus that come with pens and still no lag, it isn’t as fluid as the Apple Pencil but it is definitely more affordable and still useful for note taking

I got the iPad Air with 64gb because it's cheaper but you can also get the general iPad for even cheaper. Just have to make sure its compatible with the Apple Pencil!
