College wrestlers injured in grizzly bear attack

In early May I was turkey hunting in NE Washington State where Grizzly bears exist, but in very small numbers; numbers where the chance of running across a grizzly is next to nil. I was sitting one day turkey calling in thick forested area when I begin to hear a huffing sound. Suddenly to my right 20 yards from me I see movement and a large grizzly appears. It’s facing my direction sniffing the air for maybe 10 seconds, then turns the opposite direction and walks out of sight. I’m turkey hunting, so I’m carrying a shotgun with birdshot, which is pretty much useless on a 500 pound grizzly. My instincts told me that since it didn’t act aggressive, to sit still and go unnoticed. I’m reasonably sure it was a male, since it had no cubs; another stroke of luck in my favor. Had it been a female with cubs; she probably would have looked for and found me. The moral to my story: when in bear country, at least carry bear spray and/or be armed with an appropriate firearm and ammunition.

I bet next time they go into bear-country, that they have some protection other than their wrestling background. Lucky to have learned that lesson and still survive.

You both are so lucky 🍀 to be alive . Not many people have escaped the attack of a Bear without being critically wounded and missing limbs. Get well and be safe . If you go into Bear country I would advise some Bear spray and be armed with a weapon powerful enough to bring a Bear down. 🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻
