As I recall the black rangers actor was originally slated to be the blue ranger but he asked to be the black ranger. Because he knew he'd not only be more memorable in the role that way but it would also avoid the inevitable black ranger confusion. Since "black ranger" could have in that context meant the black guy who was the blue ranger or the actual black ranger.

Actually, it's quite the opposite, here. You see, originally, Walter Jones (Zack) auditioned to be the Blue Ranger, Billy. But, they just made Mr. Jones to be the Black Ranger because his acting chops wouldn't fit well with Billy's character. Also, Audrey DuBois originally played Trini as she was meant to be Hispanic-American. I remember when I first watched this, I did so hesitantly, expected it to be more mean-spirited than funny. But they took the gag so far it wound up being hilarious, and importantly, they also knew to end it before they beat the gag into the ground. Probably one of the best skits I've seen from College Humor.

Funfact: In the original Power Rangers, the Black Ranger Zach is played by Walter Jones, and it was HIS idea to be the Black Ranger. Originally David Yost (Blue Ranger) was going to be the Red Ranger and Walter Jones was going to be the Blue Ranger, then they cast Austin St. John as the Red Ranger and David was made into the Black Ranger, then Walter went to the makers of the show and went "Since we're moving the Rangers around, can I be the Black Ranger?" and they were like "sure" so David Yost was originally Red, then Black, then Blue. Why did Walter Jones, a black man, want to be the Black Ranger? Well in his own words he thought it would be funny if he, a black man, was the Black Ranger. Not racism, just a joke that sadly flies over the heads of a lot of people.
