It’s amazing how the painting goes from broad, flat shapes of color then bam, light and depth suddenly appears where moments earlier there was none. Thank you for letting us watch over your shoulder.

Just amazing how easily you make painting "wet on wet" seem. I have watched your uploads for many years now and must say that I continue to enjoy every one. Great work Mr Whisson

It’s almost hypnotic to watch and listen to you while you do these beautiful paintings! Technical question….i saw you dipping into a medium often in another video. What is that?
@colleywhissonartistАй бұрын
It’s Archival Lean medium made by Chroma Paints. You could try Miracle Medium from Michael Harding, it feels different, but has similar drying qualities.

Hi Colley. Wonderful to be able to watch you make these lovely paintings. The angle of the camera makes for a lot of foreshortening on the horizontal. I don't know if there is any scope to move it a little closer to the centre if you're still experimenting with angles.

Thanks for the feedback, we’re playing still the camera-work, but it’s something we’ll definitely keep in mind.

Wonderful demonstration. It’s seems that you must have had a clear vision of the final painting and the reference was just a starting point. I thought you were going to make it a night scene when you added the moon. I felt it could of easily gone in that direction with value relationships you had at the point. I was struck by how you planned the sequence of paint layers. ❤

Thanks for generously sharing your expertise! Your demo is truly inspiring, especially your mastery of the wet-on-wet technique. I'm curious, do you use paint straight from the tube, or is there a specific medium you incorporate? The smoothness and ease of manipulation are remarkable. Would you mind revealing the brand of your oil paint?
@colleywhissonartist Жыл бұрын
I use Dick Blicks Archival Oils and Lean Medium; they’ve been my go-to for many years now.

Hi Colley, I love your work! I notice that before going in with your white paint for the sand, you cover the canvas in green and purple. What was your goal with that? Is it so that it mixes and shows through the white paint? EDIT: Aha! I just watched a few more of your videos and it seems like you maybe often do an underpainting with blue / purple for cools and green for warms. Does that sound right?
@colleywhissonartist8 ай бұрын
Because we work from dark to light with Oil paint, my thought process is for my block in stage, is to go a least one tonal value darker and warmer than my finished value will be. This gives me a slightly warmer temperature and darker value base to springboard off.

@@colleywhissonartist ah, super interesting! Thanks for the response!

Colley Why did you use violet as colour for the large mass covered in sand. It seemed a much lighter value than the photo?
@colleywhissonartistАй бұрын
It’s to help unify the shadows.
@starbucks19718 ай бұрын
I have a question. Would it be better not to use white when blocking? I know that white paint dries slowly. Most artists want to know how they do it.
@colleywhissonartist8 ай бұрын
I find it’s best to leave white out of any paint mix for as long as possible, because it spoils the quality of our tonal values.
